Yes of course, I’m totally lovin’ APO EQ, the problem is that nobody on the freakin’ planet has frequency response measurements for the T60RP Argons and I find it a bit difficult to EQ peaks I can’t see. I could try the long way with trial and error while listening to my playlist of course, or just add a high shelf filter. I just wanted a bit easier solution, since sometimes I use a setup without a PC/laptop.
So from what I gathered all T50’s and the associated mods have The same annoying fatigue inducing treble spike. So you could look at the T60 rp graph and make your adjustments based on that initially.
Coming from Audeze LCD-2 closed backs, the t60rp are light as a feather in comparison. Mind you this is before mods. Hopefully I can send mine away for a conversion now in April or May.
I’ve been listening to them a lot lately just to prepare myself for the differences. Otherwise they’ve been left in their nice little bag on my headphone shelf for months on end.
Digital EQ is bad. Once the sound has been produced outside the driver it is analog, editing the sound in the analog domain is always the best way… Anyway, you can argue whether you can hear the sound quality reduction from digital EQ but does it matter? Point is it does something bad when you should always try to do something good to the signal… Plus it is especially bad to play around with the source. Unless the application is highly advanced, and it probably isn’t, it will probably negatively impact the sound. But that’s just like my opinion man.
Can you please compare before and after the mod when you get them back? I’m curious what your thoughts are for the mod.
My friend has the stock T60RP. If you’d like I could borrow it and compare with the argon
Do you suggest hardware EQ is better? I actually don’t understand this topic very much, but I had my eye on the Schiit Loki and decided that software EQ will easily save me 150$.
But the Loki is SO useful and very subtle. I just installed an RCA switcher into my chain and now all my amps have access to the Loki, if needed.
Wait, are the T60RP Argons balanced? In Ryan’s website he has written an optional balanced wiring that you can select to include in the cups mod. I did not see such an option when I ordered half a year ago (only pads and strap option existed).
How do I know if my pair is balanced or not? I use Hart Audio cable with balanced ending - will this damage my headphones if they turn out to be unbalances (I don’t know the stock cups wiring though)?
So far no issues, but still… I have to know.
The stock T60RP allowed balanced. The T60RP argon kept the balanced internals. So yes it is balanced. You just need a cable terminated to a balanced connector like 4.4mm or 4 pin XLR.
Where is this cups mod you’re talking about?
On the T60RP Argon product page if you scroll down to FAQ section you can see:
“Q: What does the balanced option mean?”
So I guess he meant drilling a hole on the other cup to be used with cables with dual plugs? That is a relief, sorry for that panic question lol.
That QA was literally copy pasted from the T50rp argon QAs. There is no balanced option for the T60 argon because it was wired balanced to begin.
Sure thing. I’m probably going to get back to you in like 6 months though lol, given the lead times and all. But yeah I’ll write up a comparative review.
On the point of balanced, like kcrack says, they’re internally balanced from the factory. They were delivered with a 3,5mm TRRS plug to 3,5mm TRS. Fostex has a fully balanced 3,5mm cable available though, but nobody really keeps it in stock. I ended up getting a kit from Hart Audio for all my headphones so I’ve been using that.
EDIT: It seems they’ve added a bunch of new options since I bought mine. You can now get them in 2,5mm balanced, 4,4mm and XLR. Quite neat actually. Would be nice if they were sold new with them though, at least one set like the 4,4 or the XLR.
Btw what exactly should be the difference between stock and Argon mod of the T60RP? I thought that the 10k peak should be tamed with this mod. Sorry, I couldn’t find much about it, could be my search skills though.
not 100% on that. I have only hear the Argonized version of them. But all T50s and there mods have the same peaks, T60s are just official T50 mods. The peaks are a quark of the driver itself, some mods do a better job of smothering it then others. If you wt Valours review of the Argon Mk3 he had a good description of the treble as like stars peaking threw the darkness. Said stars are treble daggers that have been check to not kill you.
10.5 weeks later and still waiting on my T60 Argon. Anyone else order in January?
Expect more…they got slammed
Yeah, I waited 6 months for mine, tough times.
By the way, I got my hands on a Focal Clear these days. I thought I will notice a huge difference between Clear and the T60RP Argon in terms of detail retrieval, but it was like… 15%? Noticeable, slightly better, but not that huge. Anyone can confirm if I’m wrong or not? So far the Argons are impressive for detail retrieval I guess. Maybe I need more time assessing though.
So, what do you think of your Argons? Still great clarity? Good sharp bass?
