Looking forward to that

So, Iā€™m thinking Iā€™ll give the Liquid Platinum a try here before too long. Iā€™m wondering about DAC pairing. Iā€™d like to have USB and optical and the ability to lower volume / gain on the DAC end of things. Not looking to spend much more than $200 on the DAC. My question is should I look at something like the SU-8? Would there be a noticeable difference between that and the E30? Personally, I havenā€™t noticed much difference between the DACs Iā€™ve tried, but those have all been in the $100 range + the Modius. Other models I should be looking at?

Honestly if you arenā€™t looking to go over 200 then personally I donā€™t think it would be worthwhile to get another dac here, the good stuff is too high up and the e30 is still pretty solid

For the longest time I had a Geshelli Enog 2 feeding my LP. It ticked all the boxes except for USB input which the new Geshelli DAC addresses.

The LP is q good enough amp that it scaled well with a higher end DAC if you ever move up.

Jnog looks like a pretty nice option. I didnā€™t realize that it was coming out with the USB module. Iā€™ll probably set my eyes on that.

you get the added benefit of balanced out as well. I agree with @M0N about it not being needed but the E30 is easy to sell if you needed to recoup some of the expense, however, take it from meā€¦ itā€™s NEVER a bad idea to have a spare DAC or two about. LOL

Thatā€™s true, I just donā€™t foresee a massive difference or anything but you do get to run balanced which is beneficial

Are the stock EH tubes it uses decent, or something to be instantly changed like with the Dark Voice?

They are decent, yes. They can be improved upon but the MLP impressed me a lot even with the stock tubes.

I do not have golden ears however, the LP with the included stock tubes sounds really good to me. Iā€™m still running the stock tubes. I did order a couple of other set pairs to try for fun, but they have not arrived yet. (I ordered just in time for the holiday shipping log-jamā€¦)

Iā€™m perfectly happy with the EH tubes. Havenā€™t felt the need to change.

I have rolled a few different types of tubes through the MLP. I feel that the stock tubes are good, but a decent set of New Old Stock tubes will give you a performance increase. Just how much depends on the tubes you purchase.

I personally think that as far as price to performance, the best option is a set of Siemens 7308 tubes. Upscale Audio sells them for $48 a pieceā€¦those typically go for 2 or 3 times that amount, so itā€™s a good price.

Before you tube roll, upgrade the caps! Much bigger impact and all on the positive side. The EH Tubes are good, but there are better.

The cap upgrade has had me really happy, moving a good bit towards the ā€œfunā€ side with my Eikons.

The tubes were a huge difference, as were the cap upgrades. I actually switched my caps to Audio Note Standard Electrolytic, which my buddy provided to me for free. I canā€™t recommend those highly enough.

Is upgrading the caps a complicated process? Iā€™m not familiar at all with how to do something like that or what it entails. Maybe you could make a guide!

You de-solder the existing caps and solder in new ones. I can do it for you if you want.

Scroll through the thread, the details are here, if youā€™re handy with a soldering gun, $30 dollars and 45 minutes of work.
