If the video was taken down and a new one put out, sure. But I guarantee it will never be taken down.
Comparing to the DV? Itās like comparing a car to plane. Sure they both get you from one place to another but the differences are much bigger than the similarities. Or saying that the plane is a car because it has wheels (LP is a tube amp because it has tubes).
I like JVās style but I canāt give the time to someone who is clearly giving an opinion based on the wrong comparison. Thatās where competence matters.
This is all just a consequence of looking to a reviewer whoās basically just learning āon the jobā.
And heās not the only you tube reviewer in that boat.
If you havenāt heard to really great systems built for synergy, i.e. you know how good a system can sound, or what a truly high end tube amp is supposed to sound like, your just giving impressions, not reviewing.
Yeah definitely. Very few knowledgeable reviewers out there. Most are just entertainment. It just takes a while to figure out if someone has a clue. Usually it requires a review of a piece gear you own or seeing blatant mistakes to know who not to listen to.
As for learning on the job, these guys have been doing this for years. This stuff is not rocket science. If you canāt be bothered to do a little research on the subject matter, youāre lazy and useless.
Iām heartened to see the replies to JVās review. It was driving me crazy, did I ever hear āHybridā in there? I like that he has a broad, shiny appeal, and will be approachable for those outside the hobby, which should help our overall cause. However, sometimes I get frustrated by the lack of depth as a personal viewer.
Heās a benefits over features salesman, so in that way, is it okay to brush-over the āhybridā factor and just keep calling it a ātube ampā? In that way, heās not incorrect. Also, judging the LP at its $800 retail is a bit unfair as half of its owners here likely paid half that. We have to appreciate the variety of reviewers in this field, and not expect a āperfectā reviewer. Those reviews would 45 minutes long and weād complain about length.
Sorry to bother again.
I get the correct conector finally and amp worked like for couple of hours.
Than suddenly it made strange sound, tubes turned off and amp was making gentle squeaky sound like when coil in pc sometimes make.
No sound from amp. I turned it off tried few times turn it on, no chnage.
This is very annoying. Honestly at this point Iād return it and move on to something else - itās just not worth it to deal with the issues. Sorry for your luck
Yeah man you are right. I just filled return request. I spent another 80euro on power supplies and I really liked it while it worked. Will look for something else as you suggested.
Checking back on this, i got some new tubesā¦and its still doing it. Iām kinda out of ideas. Would un-burnt in tubes be the cause? I can try to just run them in and see if it goes away i guess.
I got these bad boys ('75 Reflektor SWGP Silver Shield) from Ukraine in the mail 2 days ago and absolutely love them. I was originally using Genalex Gold Lions and wanted to try out some high quality NOS tubes so went with these due to high praise from various forums.
One thing I noticed as soon as I turned on the LP was how bright they gotā¦ my Gold Lions are extremely dim compared to these. So +1 for nicer visuals. Now, for what actually matters - sound! These things definitely take sound quality up a few notches. It feels like a small layer of film was taken off. The clarity is clear as day and I could just tell the difference in the first minute of listening. Bass feels a bit crisper and treble isnāt as sharp (just a tad).
Overall, if you want some nice vintage tubes, Iād highly recommend these!
I may try a cap mod, looks like a few in the thread here have had success doing so. @Hazi59 - any chance you saved the specific part numbers you used? Iāve done some soldering before but Iām hardly an experienced electronics hobbyist so Iām a bit stuck on what Iām looking for here.
If you open up the housing for the amp, the caps normally have writing on them. Basically though what you will want is to buy the following
3 Ć 470uf 63v radial capacitor (Nichicon Fine Gold, part number UFG1J471MHM)
2 Ć 10uf 50v radial capacitor (Nichicon Fine Gold, part number UFG1H100MDM)
1 Ć 100uf 25v radial capacitor (Nichicon Fine Gold, part number UFG1E101MPM1TD)
You can use other brands if you wantā¦but I have found that Nichicon Fine Gold Caps will get you the most bang for your buck and are very trustworthy and well made.
I suggest using digikey, mouser, or parts connexion as all 3 sites should carry some or all of what you will need.
just installed Siemens O-GetterE88c Gold pins thanks @donjklassen! they immediately fix certain aspects of the stock sound for me that I was having. treble was initially too sharp the tubes smooths them out enough to turn it up. brings subbass more forward giving me more rumble especially on my planarās fixed some upper mid shout I was having with the stock tubes. soundstage and imaging now feels more concise.
I did a bit of an experiment tonight, cabled in a Soekris dac1321 SE out into the SE in on the LP which has a set of Siemens 7308s in it currently, and working it with my LCD-2PF connected to the balance hp out. It is sounding pretty good. Itās not Bifrost 2 level good but, I think its interesting and might be fun to do some tube rolling to experiment more, using this DAC.
Anyway, just wanted to put out this matchup and what I an hearing incase anyone else was thinking about it.
On a side note - using the SE input on the LP - I have a little more range on the volume pot. I am actually getting above 10:00 and not having hit so loud my ears blead.
Iāve noticed a pattern with the LP itās happened to me twice now that Iāve settled on a pair to tubes and havenāt rolled anything in a while.
After about 5 or 6 weeks Iāll start to notice a very faint hiss on one channel. Very low, not dependent on volume setting on the DAC preamp either, as I can raise or lower the input but the level of hiss remains unchanged.
Anyway, the solution is to take the tubes out and put them back in and the hiss will go away. Dead silent for a number of weeks againā¦ until I start to detect the hiss. Sometimes on the right channel, sometimes on the left channel but it always goes away after I pull the tubes out and reseat them.
Iāve swapped the tubes left to right just to see if the hiss follows the tube but since itās all fine after I take them out, I canāt tell.
This time Iāve resolved to remember the offending tube just in case when I pops up again in a few weeks.
