Most "Planar" sounding planar for ~$600

Maybe once this whole Coronavirus thing cools down some I’ll go try the LCD X. It won’t cost any more than the price of gas and will simultaneously answer my questions if do I want planars and do I want $1000+ headphones.

Maybe the HEXX could be an option as well when they come back in stock.

Also thanks for once again being the great hifi-guides Shepard, leading us sheep to the best (and often expensive) audio equipment.

Might add, if the place you’re going to has them, try the Hifiman Sundara and lower priced offerings. You might be happy at a lower price point. One thing to take into consideration that won’t play out during a quick in store comparison. Comfort. The LCD X are quite heavy. It can be a bit much depending on how that affects you.

The sundara is really great for the price, hard to go wrong tbh (but if you can demo before buying anything I would suggest doing that first)

Sadly this place only seems to have the LCD X, Sony MDR Z1R, and HD820. Other than that it seems to be a lot of main stream and Bluetooth stuff.

I definitely would try something like the HEXX or maybe even the sundara, but hifiman’s QC reputation scare me a bit and I’m not looking for a $350 to $600 hassle with returns and replacements. Also I’m considering a ~$1000 headphone for some time in the next year or so, so the LCD X could be that headphone.

Their older products would be a concern, but the newer hifiman products are quite reliable from my experience imo

Ya, I guess. I’m not like totally apposed to hifiman, it’s just hard to justify that kind if money sometimes, so possible DOAs and other issues can make it harder. To be honest I am actually pretty interested in the sundara, but they seem to be less “planar” sound and more treble detail oriented, so I’m not sure if they are a good way to try the monolith that is planar headphones.

I think the sundara is a great example of a good planar imo, it’s just a brighter one

Just don’t buy any monolith planar headphones, they aren’t great imo lol

Same, I agree lol (and that goes for hifiman in general as you are kinda missing out)

@M0N how well extended would you say the sundara are (both bass and treble, but particularly treble)?

Treble is very well extended and controlled at the same time. Bass actually digs deep with little roll off, it’s a pretty well extended headphone

treble compared to the 58x I feel like its a significant improvement… very nice detail and smooth to my ears

you’re a rock and metal guy?

Yes, but I will listen to pretty much anything that tickles my fancy.

Also @A_COC0NUT I just realized the thread title sounds like a Jeopardy topic

“I’ll take most planar sounding planar for 600”

It’s a pretty solid all rounder imo, neutral bright signature

awesome :joy:

it really shines here

The reason I’m interested in the sundara specifically is that I LOVE the Tin P1 and the sundara seem to be a similar concept of great highs and flat (in a good way) mids and bass. Would you or @M0N be able to compare the two?

So the tin p1 would be more mid centric and also more intimante, but both the sundara and p1 should have similar timbre, but the sundrara would have more detail, more extension, better separation and spatial recreation, also a smoother sound
