I could find topics about workout gear, but not about tracks that get you motivated during workouts.
After you drop a track maybe let everyone know its context for you - is it good for enduring a long run, or getting you to face up to some intense bursts?
Tonight I was listening to The Knife on shuffle during a weights/body weight workout in the shed. I was surprised how well it fit, I never went to change the track for the sake of mood or tempo, no sets were awkwardly waiting for a ‘drop’ to get started… I was just in a zone the whole time. No crazy BPM making slower things like weighted pull ups feel rushed or off tempo.
I’ll start it off with a specific track though. This takes me way back to dropping into push-ups in the kitchen when I was a kid. The force, punctuation, and attitude of this song are perfect for “if you don’t start this set at 0:32, you were never going to start this set”.
I haven’t ‘worked out’ in a long time, but this always seemed like a good motivational piece, especially if you’re about to do something related to martial arts: Kodō - Niji No Nagori
(Originally mentioned it here but it got nuked in some embedded-videos disaster.)
I’ve been starting to listen to 2pac for workouts.
In the time since my last post I went through several months of only listening to the Dune movie soundtracks and the Dune scrapbooks. An unlikely workout soundtrack but it worked very well for me. A lot of focus from tracks that accompany scenes of discovery, defending a homeland, dying for a higher cause, helped me focus like I was training under Gurney Halleck I guess!
After that, a lot of Neue Deutsche Härte on shuffle, chiefly older Rammstein, and Eisbrecher.
Tracks like this:
It’s been cold in the garage lately (cracked brick walls, no heater) and I’m looking for fresh motivation. I like the 2pac tracks I’ve tried but I need to be able to put a long playlist together.
Is anyone willing to share artists/playlists that help them get in the zone / push harder / dig deeper?
Btw I tend to skip tracks that have sexual content, I never get anything out of listening to another man’s talk about his exploits or fantasies,!especially given the tone/degrading to the woman way it’s usually done with. That’s more often in rap but it’s across genres, dance/club music too for example. Not part of my workout mentality I guess.
I have trouble finding tracks that get me into a flow for running but lately I’ve found some EDM works pretty well as it often start off with a good hook and builds in energy which is great for keeping me going. It works great for lifting weights too but I’m not usually concerned with sustaining myself as much so it’s more for that building up energy.
