Need a recomendation to find a open backed heaphone with either a warm or dark sound signiture

Nothing major. Pad swap and some foam removal under the grill.

But you can do much more modding to fit your preference.

If I opted for a closed back, but one with more open or airy pads. how much more does my choices get?

Well itā€™s still a bit slim, but the B&O H6, Sony mdr1am2, and the Nighthawks (going to count for both open and closed lol in my mind) become an option

These are more warm but not dark, but very smooth and warm

Actually, The Thieaudio Phantoms are darker without the mods. So if you want something with a truly dark sound signature, the mods probably arenā€™t necessary for what you are asking for.

1i know these arenā€™t really ever reccd on here that much but how about the akg k712? nice warm just a tad bit pricey

There is a huge treble peak on those. There are no such thing as a warm AKG can with the exception of the K7XX.

are they really? i remember them being warm has been a while. the treble didnt particularly bother me thoughā€¦but Im only treble sensitive on certain frquencies

What about the 371? Thatā€™s a bit warm

The 371 are neutralish, but still have the slight U shape typical with the Harman Target Response Curve. The K712 arenā€™t as bright compared to the rest of the AKG lineupā€¦but everything from 2 khz to 12 khz is boosted north of neutral, so it is definately more of a mild V shape.

edit: thanks for all the input so far, its a lot to think about. Ill have to sleep on it all, I have a new set of pads for my set of closed back arriving soonish if they make a noticeable improvement I may not need a new set of cans or it may just mean I can settle for another closed back set that simply not as claustrophobic from the git go and do a pad swa

right now I have a set of HE-400i cant use them atm, the cat was bad and killed the cableā€¦again. My other set is a a set of t60rp Argons, using lambskin pads currently on them but Iā€™m switching to suedeā€™s come Monday hoping that will make them less claustrophobic.
