New 350$ Planars -Thieaudio Phantom

Connor_g I’m trying to follow but can’t find what pissed you off. Please elaborate.

Happy to take a fine if it is…

Like I said… Meant in jest.

People are way too sensitive in this hobby.

Here’s what I got. No dj box but that’s ok. I threw on some XL Brainwavz pads which I had lying around but I think they’re too big.
On an initial listen with the basic mods (new pads, and 1 circular foam disc,) it’s challenging my Beyerdynamic T1’s.
I will give more feedback once I burn them in.

The Brainwavz XL pads work fine imho
The other mod worth doing is to remove the oblong foam pad that covers the driver on the inside, you’ll see it when you remove the earpad :+1:

Ok, I’ll try that when I get home. On a quick listen, the major difference came from changing the earpads.
I was initially worried about the purchase especially after so many people had a problem with these cans. But honestly, I was really impressed with them. Maybe there’s a qc issue going on?

If you used balanced it probably would be just fine. Also the fiio m11 pro is out for preorder if you want thx amps

The fiio q5s also exists if you don’t need the dap portion

Never heard of this artist but gave it a click. Have a goofy grin on at my desk at how good this sounds.

I have to say this whole thread has become a complete and utter soap opera, an eye opening audiophile rollercoaster ride from start to finish, definitely worthy of an Emmy nomination imho lol.
Big thanks goes out to the sponsors…Thieaudio for product and product placement and BGGAR and Zeos for marketing.

Thanks again while I kick back and enjoy my Phantoms  :beers:

I know this is amatuer hour work here, but this is important for a couple reasons. One, I struggle with OCD & anxiety issues. So much so that typically I cannot complete a simple mod like this. I get bogged down in worrying I’ll break something or it won’t be perfect. I end up pacing around and doing nothing. This time, I stuck it through and felt great about it for two reasons. The one you care about is how much more this mod improved the sound for me.

I highly recommend trying it. I have done similar mods that have been suggested here with the exception of taking out the 5mm foam in the inside of the ear cup. I found the vocals shouty and a lot more distortion and nothing really special. So I had kept it in.

Now I’ve taken it out and replaced it with the felt around the fuzzor. It’s almost as if someone hit a switch and said, “Okay, you’ve worked hard on this headphone, I’ll reward you with amazing sound.” The detail is increased yet the highs are smoother. Thins out the bass just a little but it still good and the trade-off is worth it to my ears. Highly recommend giving this a try if you haven’t already.

If it makes you less anxious, had you messed up, you wouldn’t have been the first one to destroy a phantom driver…

If people are curious as to what the phantom’s guts look like, here’s a picture of the membrane moments before the other half of the magnets were ripped out of my hand and through the membrane… WHOOPS, lol

How did you manage that?

The magnets are substantially stronger than you think…

what were you going to do to the driver that you took it apart?

Well, I was looking for good mounting points for fazors and was just sort of overall curious as to why the trace that was visible through the driver’s looked like it does.
Anyway, I misunderstood how it was assembled, as the screws visible on the earcup side sandwich everything together and keep the magnets from jumping. I had thought they were held together differently and that I was only taking off a backing plate rather than the magnet assembly…

I just cut it with sharp household scissors (hence the uneven lines). I should have gotten precision scissors. This was going to be a trial run but it sounds so good I’m going to leave it. Age has taught me sometimes you have to leave well enough alone. :slightly_smiling_face:
