New 350$ Planars -Thieaudio Phantom

You’re gonna be very happy once you remove that fabric attached to the grills.

First prototype grill!
Now, this is rough. I just got the printer in Yesterday, so it definitely still needs some tweaking to get a better finish, but this is the general idea.

It fits flush and uses the stock screws! Lines up better than the metal grills in fact, lol.
The lettering is supposed to say “SBK” which is what I’m calling my little headphone mod/accessory side business

What do you guys think?

hi guys ! i am new here just got my phantoms yesterday. i need help…
my ears are too big to fit whole to the earpads so the pads just lay over them and it is not comfortable .
i’m coming from HD58X and they were super duper comfy. is there anything i can do / buy pads that you know that might help me ? i need something deeper and wider from inside because of the circular shape of the headphones.

Looks fantastic, nice job

i just pulled out the foam under the pads, finally my ears can fit and they sound much better, should i remove the foam under the back plate also ? or will it pinch the highs too much ?

That looks really, really good. Big improvement over the stock look.

After trying many of the various mods over the last 5-6 weeks I now have mine set up as…Brainwavz XL perforated pads, one of the foam discs under the grill removed but the material still in place (it’s been removed a few times and replaced with, first nothing then a 5mm thick disc of foam then a 3mm thick one (see further back in this thread) ended up not liking either) and the oblong foam removed on the inside under the ear pad. They’re easy to play around with mod wise and easy to reset them to stock if you don’t like what you’ve done :+1:

Can we pay you to make these for us?

just tried what you said, the biggest improvement is by far taking off the foam under the pads. i took off one of the circles under the grill also, indeed sounds better by a bit, maybe a little to bright for me but i need to test it more
must say i was shocked to see how thick are the pads they used
ill try in the future different pads and update, thanks a lot bro <3

update… ooooh there is https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3847617

Gonna steal a chance to say thank you for your initial reviews and enthusiastic thumbs up of this headphone. Taking the leap of faith I’ve learned a lot, got to chat with some great folks on this thread and really couldn’t be happier with the headphone. Thanks very much for what you do!

Welcome! Great headphone once you get it tuned to your liking. I’ll show you the configuration that worked for me:

1.) Replaced stock pads with ZMF Oval Suede pads
2.) Removed Grill and took off the black piece of fabric from the grill
3.) Removed one piece of small circle foam and centered the remaining one
4.) Cut and inserted a large 3mm circle piece of foam to cover everything and put the grill back on
5.) Removed 5mm square piece of foam on inside of the ear cup
6.) Did the fuzzor mod with felt that I cut out that replaced the square foam piece (picture further up in the thread)

Just wanted to give you all the options. Good luck finding what sounds great to you and welcome!

wow thanks a lot ! right i have tried 2, 3 , 5. 5 was giving me the biggest improvement. also i took the 5 mm piece under the pads and put it under the grills.
so right now im with stock pads + no foam under pads + 5 mm foam ( what was under the pads) under the metal grills. this is the best i got right now and it really sounds good.
really want to buy other pads, something more tight and with isolation. snug fit.
main music for me is heavy metal, but also a lot of acoustic songs and music.
the heavy music sounds 85% i’d say for my taste so i think other pads will give me more. eveything else sounds amazing.
also want to try to EQ them to see what i can get but i can’t get the APO equalizer to work right now.
so that’s it for now ( pretty long XD)
** planning on doing 4 that you suggest i think 5 mm is too thick and no foam is nice but 3 mm might be the best. so changing the 5 mm to 3 mm under the grills is my plan + buy zmf or brainwavz pads that people recommended me.

For me the pad change was the biggest improvement, followed by removing the fabric from the grill and then the fuzzor mod. Good luck!
