New 350$ Planars -Thieaudio Phantom

Now im gonna be one of those punks just sitting on the side reading the comments on people raving about these cans.

Lol…they maybe wack? we’ll let you know :+1:

Im not sure but they said the issue was something like the credit cards/banks from my area is not compatible with the payment methods accepted on their end.

Anyway, i guess im gonna have to pass up on these cans.

do they not take paypal?

I tried using the paypal account but it still produce the same result. Payment was not processed so my order was cancelled. I live in Asia so I also tried COD on other platforms but apparently the company/brand does not accept this payment method even if the platform/online store does.

Mine arrived. I don’t claim any expertise, I’ve only been mucking around with headphones for 12 months.
I think they’re excellent value though. Really comfortable. I couldn’t critically assess the sound for anyone but I have Senn HD820’s, Focal Clear, Audeze LCD-X, Campfire Cascades and Atlas - and they’re in the mix for a lot less money. The Chinese are changing this whole industry.

Awesome. Mine just passed customs and would be delivered soon.

So with your original comment, is he (BGGAR) right?

Good question. I have to say yes, I can’t disagree with anything he says - the only point I’d add is the build quality is arguably not as good as the top tier brands, but that’s countered by the lightness, flexibility and consequent comfort. Again, I have zero expertise with this, but I just don’t know how I could recommend anything more expensive than these now to a friend new to headphones looking for an open back. Packaging and accessories way better than everything except possibly the Sennheisers too. I’d grab these before any of my other headphones for a weekend away. BGGAR will be a loss when he goes, as he hints at. I’m a doctor with some experience, and his OCD is dialled in at exactly the level you want it for what he’s doing. Any more and he’d be dysfunctional. Love his work.

Still awaiting mine :slightly_frowning_face: but hopefully they won’t be long :grinning:

BTW what cable terminations did yours come with? as I’m looking to order a custom one and these take a couple of weeks to be made up :beers:

again, impressive.
2 cables, one braided iem like - I think that one pentacom - the other fairly thin like cascade comes with to 3.5. Include good quality adaptors to 2.5. Think that’s right but haven’t got them with me

More impressions(thought full review but still good stuff) now:

Just feeding y’all as I see stuff  if I wasn’t down sizing I’d be in too, best of luck with the purchases.

So the headphone end connection is like an IEM?

Braided like what comes with an iem. 2.5 into the headphones.

Cheers for that …:+1:

Mine should be here on Thursday, I’m so excited

Hows the imaging on the headphones?? How do they compare to the sendys??

Very quick take on the Phantoms with about 3 hours with them on my head: They have nice detail retrieval but not the level of the Sendy’s; they miss that magical sparkle but actually seem a bit brighter and more mid-forward. They don’t have quite the same speed in the upper registers and also less bass than I’d hoped for with a driver this size in the lower registers. What’s there is very clean and tight but far less subbass than the Sendy as well. However the stage is much wider and open. Imaging precision maybe just a tad blurry and emphasizes center or side a little - I can’t quite tell if vocalists are left-handed or not ; )

Don’t read too much into this yet as I can almost hear them breaking in and the 2nd pass through my auditioning list has notably more bass than the first. It’s not the drivers breaking in so much but the shag-carpet pads flattening out some and forming a better seal.

I bet these could rattle your head with a denser pad and I haven’t tried the bonus set - they looked smaller, not shaggy, not very dense either. Maybe for small heads? Not sure… I think I need to track down a set of Dekoni hybrid pads for these but then +$50 too.

I expect these will be quite responsive to EQ and I can keep the shag and get the bass and it is comfy but I’m going through a few sessions stock/flat to learn the baseline these deliver before I start tinkering too much.

The storage box these come in is cheap; the standard 3.5 mm SE cable is also cheap and didn’t have the 1/4" TRS adapter that screws on (we all have spares anyway). However the early-order cable set is vastly nicer that included the balanced cable (2.5mm x5) with 3.5 SE adapter and 4.4 x5 adapter lets you hook up anything less XLR (and we all have adapters anyway).

Overall, the Sendy’s are better built and better sounding but at 1/3rd more money they’re not 1/3rd better. Both are really good bang-for-the-buck, I think, at their respective tiers.

Deff try the other pads, I’m curious about the less shaggy ones as those are the ones bgga prefers.

He pictures and recommends what I call the shaggy pads (vs “dog hair” pads) and swapping to them upon arrival. The ones he shows at 4:00m in the latest vid were already installed on my set that just arrived so seems they have already implemented his advise

The dog hair pads are about half as thick, I can tell they’re not deep enough for my ~normal ears without even fitting them. They’ll hit, hard, and I doubt I’ll even bother with them on closer inspection- no increase in density, perhaps less actually and just shorter fuzz that might seal a tad better but the shag is flattering with wear nicely, bass much better now.

Ok cool, just checking since he was talking about one set of pads not being good, glad it is getting better

Mine have cleared customs and are with the final postal carrier so should be with me in a day or two
