I want to still try the Elex. If I like it I’ll keep it along with the Phantom.
100% agree with the try with own ears.

I really do understand why so many people like the Elex. I kept saying, “Man, these are solid! Man these are smooth! These do everything so well.”, and I never grabbed for them. I’d listen, say to myself, “those are just damned solid”, marvel at them and would put them back in favor of the Phantom. That’s due to my preference though. I enjoy punchy percussion and hearing the details of drums and cymbals.
To me, the Elex is the girl you bring home to meet the parents who they adore and everyone likes, but you drop her off at 10:00pm and then hang out instead with the girl w/the tattoos that has you laughing all night until 3:00am. Maybe not technically better, but I enjoy the Phantoms more.
If/when you get the Elex, I’d love to hear your A/B thoughts.
Sometimes people don’t want something that does everything well, and actually want something that does really well at one aspect and not at another (wanting to find obvious flaws is sometimes weird lol) (perhaps so they can have an excuse to get another headphone lol)
I have no idea what you’re talking about.
Are we still talking headphones here?
Hey guys, curious on what dac and amp are you guys using for the phantoms?
ifi micro iDSD and or ifi nano iDSD balanced…prefer the non-balanced micro though
90% of the time on the powerdacV2.
I use the PowerDAC V2 most of the time as well.
ive never resonated with something so much in my life
Greetings – brand new here, posting – I’ve been lurking (this and other forums) for a while; really it’s this thread, and XyleFBB encouragement to come here and look at the Phantom Mods (from a youtube exchange!) that brought me here. Being incompetent with “arts and crafts” (cutting straight lines, let alone a circle, in foam, e.g.) I’m sort of hesitant to start modding the Phantom. But so far… not in love with the headphone, really, unmodded… So thinking. Will ask for help. Happy New Year all!
Happy New and welcome to the forum feel free to ask us Phantom owners anything regarding mods etc stock Phantoms are ok but with a few easy mods and tweaks you can get them to sound a whole lot better
Thank you for the welcome, Ohmyboy! I’ll be asking when it’s not New Year’s eve probably… though really what I am after is… presumably pull the squares of foam on the ear cup side; the covering on the outside; but then… cut perfect circles out of thin foam? How do I do that? And… I guess I want to try fuzzors? I am not sure how to make such a thing or what material…
I’m not thinking about messing with the grilles at this point. I saw way back in this thread that the physics of the magnet probably not an issue with the grilles…
Removal of the material stuck to the grills would be my first mod this opens up the sound, the material is very sticky and can be easily re-stuck if you want or replaced with thin 2mm foam, to cut the circles I place a sheet of foam on a cutting board place a cup or glass of the required size pushed down on the mug with one hand while cutting around it with a craft knife…boom a perfectly fitting circle of foam
Ah. X-Acto knife or razor knife, not scissors. I feel a little dumb having to be told, lol. Thanks, Ohmboy!
PS and swop the oe pads for a set of Brainwavz xl’s I use the perforated ones again this’ll make a big difference
Zeos also recs the ZMF Oval Suede pads, and they’re really good too (and super comfy). I ended up prefering those pads over the perforated brainwavs by quite a bit.
I think I’ll start with the Brainwavz because… I already have a pair! And the ZMF are pricey. But sure, I am interested in hearing further suggestions for pad-rolling… I’m going to take this slow. And hopefully steady.
I wanna know from those who’ve maxed out their Phantoms with mods, Fazor’s, pads, etc; how they compare to other headphones, whether they now sound well above their price range? whats the overall sound like and if there are any issues still left
I’ve been lurking for a while and have been trying a few of the mods people have suggested.
Finally settled on Dekoni angled suede pads, 3mm Foam under the outer grill and burgundy speaker mesh on top of that.
EDIT: Also if anybody has any suggestions for replacement headbands that can be easily acquired (Not being salvaged from another pair of headphones) please let me know.
