Picking up HE4XX's which DAQ/Amp or DAQ and Amp combo?

Funny you mention that i was actually looking at that last night. I know nothing about it. What are the benefits vs the Magni/modi? I see it’s modular so you can indeed upgrade (theoretically sticking with Schiit) but is the actual amp and dac that much better… or is the additional cost just for the all in one solution?

Random: now that I think about it. I wonder if it wasn’t the Magni 3 that was hindering the sound. The modi 3 was compressing even on the Sp200 and Archel 2. I’m going to try the Enog2 / Magni 3 combo when in get home.

I’m expecting some compression but I think the modi3 might have been the weaker link…

Oh That’s Purdy. I wouldn’t mind having something like that

Will do. I know from A/B testing that the Magni 3 does compress more than others… But I’m 100% now the modi 3 made it worst

I wonder how the 3+ compares. Correct me if i’m wrong (i’m just learning really)… compression often leaves a more “warm” sound signature, right? Kinda clips out some of that “width” on the high side?

Or i’m completely wrong lol! (prob)

If i could justify spending that much… that looks gorgeous!

given monoprice’s track record as of late in the monolith line starting form the liquid spark they have only realeased good things . really hope the dac is good might get it so I have a cool stack and leave my dt10 for a future linear non colored amp. for doing proper comparisons

yeah lol fuck that shit

Compression does not add warmth imo. More bass and a smoother sound gives warmth imo

I think that the 4xx would really benefit from the extra boost in power from the Asgard. I think it would be worthwhile imo we as the amp is better and the dac is improved as well

It’s not a huge price bump once i consider good RCAs really.

How much “better” is the Asguard 3 with 4490 DAC compared to the Modi/Modi 3+ if you had to guess. (Impossible question i know lol)

Is it something a non audiophile like myself will even notice on the 4XX?

No, I wouldn’t say compression makes it warmer.

I can explain compression this way.

Say someone plucks a guitar string and it creates a sound, the string doesn’t suddenly stop. It continues to move and over time it movies less and less until it eventually does stop.

Now less say for example that sound has 30 levels of sound/tone. No compression would mean that you hear all 30 levels of sound/ tones… A compressed device would do exactly that, it might try to fit all 30 levels into 15 levels.

So the compressed sound is flatter, less lively, less realistic.

Uncompressed sounds more alive, and true to life. It’s more detailed.

Bad recording sound really bad on clean non compressed systems, but good recording are something magical.

Compressed sound is more forgiving of bad recording, but that doesn’t give it a warm tone…

If you want warm. Liquid Spark has less compression, slightly warmer mid and a rolled off treble. I don’t find the he4xx need the spark to help with terrible. In fact, on my eq I bumped the bass and mids on the 4xx with the spark to fill out the sound.

Though lately I haven’t been using the eq

Compression isn’t always a bad thing either as most engineers use compression religiously lol (including myself). In music it’s a useful tool, but on an amp it’s not a good thing (unless you are into that kinda sound). Also not talking about the loudness war (that’s not good)

Another option would be just go 6xx if you want crazy mids… Which I do love me some vocals.

Yes, in the right hands. I agree…compression can be a tool.

So I think you would be able to tell the difference and it would be an improvement but I can’t really give you a definite answer. You have to take in to account the law of diminishing returns. I can tell you I personally prefer it to the modi and magni 3 stack for sure

Do you use compression to fight semblance?

Thanks for those explanations! Makes more sense to me now. I figured the compression lended to the “Schiit sound” people talk about and most (from the little i’ve read) seem to say it doesn’t emphasize the highs… which is great as i’m not a huge fan of really bright headphones.
