I think it is just your imagination and listening on non-matched volume unless you are listening to something really power hungry like planar headphones.
For me all my IEMs including S12 sounds exactly from Q5k the same SE vs. BAL when I try to set the volume similarily 
But my ears have failed me not once, so you never know
