Oh yeah that kind of feeling is sentiment to me as well, but the sad thing is that before fresh graduates would be able to get a job or even obtain experiences for a higher position in the IT business, the one who got laid off from work due to the pandemic would be the one that will get those entry jobs, unlike us who are pretty much fucked, especially when you are in a country not as sophisticated or even organized such as the US.
For now, I have to work for what I currently what I can do at the moment, and it is working in our own family business that makes products like isopropyl alcohol, far from my field of learning but hey a job is a job.
This is going to be typical regardless of the job you are applying for.
Don’t let it stop you applying.
I will say that in most cases companies will not hire you to train you on external technologies. But most of what goes in a job description is more “I would like” than “I need”.
Yes, so much this. I’m currently in an IT Management position. I can always take the right kind of employee and train them to do what they need to do. I can’t take the wrong person who knows what they’re doing and turn them into the right person. You never know whose minds you might change once you get in for the interviews.
Getting into the company I’m at (been here for over 13 years now), was a case like this. My direct report told me that the hiring decision had come down to me and someone else whose credentials at the time were higher level than mine. The VP of IT was leaning towards the other guy, but my DR thought I was the better person for the job. Obviously I won out…
TL:DR: Let them disqualify you for the job instead of you disqualifying yourself.
While you’re not in interviews or sending in resumes, build your skill stack. Make note of the things you’re asked for experience in and learn them. Need programming skills? Take some of the countless programming courses available for free online. Need networking skills? Take CCNA courses and start building virtual networks in emulators. Need web skills? Set up a web server with MySQL and build something. Learn to code. Get on Project Euler and start doing the coding challenges. Want to learn Salesforce? Start doing Trailheads, all completely free.
As a senior IT person, I have input on who we hire. I frequently vote for a less experienced person who is taking initiative to learn things on their own over the highly experienced or highly educated.
I had some strange FedEx tracking locations between Schiit in the L.A. area and myself in the Chicago area a few months ago. Not accidentally across an ocean strangeness mind you, but still absolute middle of nowhere farm country in central Kansas 100+ miles from any interstate bizarreness.
Ever since running Roon Core on my old laptop and this home built gaming PC (way, way, WAY over built/over spec’d for Roon Core), I have done every possible thing to keep stupid Windows 10 Pro from doing automatic updates and reboots. Gone through every setting in Windows, went in and edited the registry, and yet Windows still does whatever the hell it wants to do, whenever it wants to do it.
This has been an on-going battle, and no matter what trick or tip I try, nothing works. It freaking pisses me off to no end.
Just a few minutes ago I was sitting here enjoying Tears for Fears on my headphone rig, and all of a sudden, no music. I look at Roon on my laptop and it’s “searching for a server”…
Ehh the feelings been a little mutual lately. A bit of a life slump where nothings getting traction as i feel others are zooming off. I visited a friend for a wedding last weekend and it got me charged back up a little but returning home you find the same circles you were spinning in.
bump! When I’m hiring for my team I do the same. It’s amazing how little people try. For some interviews I’ve even told the candidate the list of topics ahead of time. And then they show up without studying those topics. (WTF?!?!) In one case I ended the interview on the spot when they told me they hadn’t studied. If you can’t prep for my interview I have no time for you. Plenty of hard working engineers out there who will take time to prepare, study, and own their professional development. I WILL NOT manage your professional development for you! That’s on YOU! (rant rant rant! angry rant!)
Just tried Zeos’ Discord channel (never dealt with Discord before today). Nothing but a bunch of extremely rude, extremely childish and immature idiots on there. I wasn’t even on there 30 minutes before I ended up deleting my post and account.
I just posted the same exact post as on here about swapping out my new Dekoni pads on my Sundara’s, and all those fools could do was bitch about me using a Topping A90 amp, which I never even mentioned any gear other than the cans.
I’m too old, too mature and have normal “adult” things going on in my life and family than deal with that kind of shit willingly.
I even PM’s Zeos about it and he apologized, then proceeded to send me a link to his public telegram on reddit, which the link didn’t work. But whatever. Probably the same kind of crap there as well, since it’s reddit.
I’ll just stick to the forums. At least there’s some form of civility here.
I just hired an engineer with a similar background. He was laid off early in his career, 4 years out of school. For the type of work I do this is not enough to get out of the “fresh graduate” category - typically need 5 or 6 years for that. He couldn’t find a job and ended up working at his family insurance company for over a year. He hated it! But he learned what he could - how to sell, how to present. And invested A LOT in self-development / professional-development. He kicked his own ass harder than anyone else would. And fought to get another entry level job (competing with the fresh-outs who would take less money). When he got the job he was well prepared, new what he wanted, and killed it in the new job. Outperformed all of the other young engineers and earned promotions. Now, 10 years later, he works for me and is the senior digital designer on a team of 15, leading the design team. He’s a bad ass engineer. And he fully attributes it to his time working as an insurance salesman with his family.
You can do it man! Of course it’s hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. But if you are smart enough to hangout on HiFi Guides, then you are smart enough to make the most of your situation and prepare for your next big opportunity! cheering for you!
Well, apparently to them, I was shilling it for starters. Going on about the stupid Hi Def sticker on it, complaining that it’s shit Chifi gear, etc, etc.
I don’t know how they came up with me shilling it since I never said anything about it. The only two things I mentioned in that post was “Dekoni” and “Sundara”. I literally copy and pasted my post here about it on there.
And then they proceed to call me rude because I stand up for myself. LOL Just a bunch of punks on there.
