Rant thread - share your grievances, not just audio

Jesus …this is my pet peeve. People watch shit on TV and no one reads books anymore. LOL.

Welp, it’s back to the usual Extended Community Quarantine from August 6-20, meaning no more outdoor basketball during those days. Minor grievance but not really a bad deal, since I have been doing a lot of high rep calisthenics lately, and man they may be hard but the results are worth it. Burpees for now instead of dribbling for now, not a bad trade-off during the duration of ECQ.

Talk about irritation. Finally got internet back after what feels like an eternity of them working on it because some moron apparently ran into a pole or something… apparently it takes more than a month to get internet back up but what do I know.

Ordered my new keyboard to work on… Gmmk PRO that came out from Glorious. Got it in, was scuffed somehow not a big deal. Tried to work on it… one of the screws in the back was over tightened to all hell and had a hard time getting it removed surprised it didn’t mess up the threads. Look at all of it, looks alright start installing my switches… using aquakings currently… a lot of the aquakings apparently came in all jacked up and bent thankfully I had enough to do up the keyboard. Get over to the keycaps… realized ducky keycaps are not compatible… so I went ahead and ordered glorious’s own keycaps get them in and not only do they not send me a backspace key but the space bar doesn’t even fit on the board. get told they need a video showing the issue… like… better idea… send me the backspace key ya didn’t give me in the first place and a proper space bar that fits the board.

Customer service has been… to say the least, not very helpful. Online chat went for a whole 2 seconds before telling me to continue it through email… which now escalated to well we will be in touch within 2 business days. How does it take multiple days just to get keycaps? Not even a big issue here, they called it a complex problem… I really do hate my luck with this stuff

Top all this off with, I had to send my T1 in for repair as for some reason the right speaker is fuzzing out… not sure what happened… I fully expect that to be expensive though

I consistently find the most head-scratching things said in the r/headphones subreddit. Recently a thread came up where someone was asking which DAC they should get. And several people gave the opinion that DACs are ‘solved’ and spending more than $100 on a DAC is pointless.

Which seems obviously absurd. Why would people buy DACs that cost ten times as much if there was no benefit? Does a Bifrost 2 really sound no better than a Modi? It still frustrates me that people in this hobby can’t even agree on basic ideas of how things work. If people went around saying that a Hyundai was no different than a Maserati they would get laughed at but somehow you can say something like that in the audio world with a straight face and people will agree with you. I don’t get it.

But you gave such a great example, for why it happens. If you only want a car to get from place A to B a Hyundai and a Maserati are equal (maybe even the Hyundai is a bit better since they have less mechanical issues over a longer period of ownership). If you want luxury and performance then they are not equal at all.

So it all comes down to what people want out of their hobby and so you can get vastly different opinions.

Unfortunately it creates the misconception that they all sound the same and don’t matter, snake oil, etc.

And you don’t even need to go into crazy expensive stuff to notice it. So it really questions the credibility of anyone that says they are “solved”.

People in this hobby need to read some books on basic electronics…

Don’t you just love those days where things are a little bumpy, but that’s alright. You’ve got tomorrow off, right? Well… Ain’t it just the craziest thing when you get thrown a curve ball to fuck it all up?
I figured “you know what, I’m sick of giving Walmart shoes a try and having the sole coming off after about 6 months. I’ve got about 5 hours before I gotta be at work, so let’s run into town and grab a new pair at Academy.” So I’m sitting at the intersection, waiting to turn. Light turns green, person in front of me starts to roll, so I let off the brakes. Suddenly they hit their brakes, so I hit mine. Next second, they’re back to rolling and I’m getting rear ended.

Has anyone else had issues with trying to find out information on a company before an interview?
I’m temping with Robert Half (they’ve been great to work with so far), and have me set up for an interview tomorrow morning before I go in for work. The position will station me at a school, and I’ll be the go to IT person for that school. Deployment, outages, any technical issues, I’m their guy. Temp-hire, $17/hour, and contract is through the end of October. I say, great, can you send me the company’s website and the job description. I get the following:

I’m sitting here going, okay, let’s try looking up the… How are there so many companies with the same name?

Or just ask Maze

Look, I know what I know and know what I don’t know.
And I am a tinkerer, not an electrical engineer.

I am beyond frustrated with this.

IEMs should have arrived yesterday. Someone was watching on it toddler, the baby was was with my wife on the course she’s taking, it was designated as a chill day for me to catch up with things. It was an OK day, I packaged up my laptop for my sister in the UK and attended to some things. What would have been great, would have been having a fee hours if dedicated listening in the new IEMs.

No matter, if they’re a day late they’ll come today, my wife is still on the course with baby coming along, I have dishes to do while our toddler is napping, that’s a good dedicated listening stretch.

Except they didn’t come today either.

I live in Winston Salem, 30+ minutes drive from Greensboro. But ALL my USPS mail comes through Greensboro and it is the THIRD WORST SORTING OFFICE IN THE COUNTRY.

Here are two incomprehensible gems from this week. My IEMs spending 2 days bouncing around in Greensboro, and a vest for teaching in the fall (so no rush on that) getting to Greensboro, going to a random far off PO in my state, and then coming back to Greensboro, and bouncing around there. It’s not the first time they’ve gone to Lenoir for no reason. My street name doesn’t even exist there, and the post codes are completely unalike.

Nothing to do with COVID, nothing seasonal, just the most annoying distribution center in the US. I dread to think what the 1st and 2nd worst ones are like.

Edit: and of course this second failed opportunity to deliver the IEMs was a Saturday, so I won’t get them until Monday, we’ll have both kids on our hands all over again and Sunday will be a bit of a drag.

Like what are they doing in there? Playing hockey with the scanners as sticks?

I had a very frustrating bout with some records that took over 2 months to go from Georgia to Seattle. They just bounced back and forth across country and even came through Seattle 3 prior times and the 4th was the charm.

Oh man. Imagine the air miles if we wanted to do the same! You win, I can see why you saved the picture!

EDIT: OK new rant, I am DEFINITELY tapping the reply button next to specific posts, 50% of the time this creates a general reply instead.

Right?! I would have a free trip after all those miles build up.

Did I mess up? I thought I replied directly but looks like I didnt

Exact issue I’ve been having across the forum. I think on laptop as well as phone.

Edit: Oh for goodness sake. Exhibit A. It even showed your avatar and said this would be a directed reply.

If you reply to the post directly above your post it will not show. If you reply to any post above that, it should show.

It should notify the reply to the person you replied to either way though even if it does not show like it is a reply in the thread.

This makes so much sense. Thanks for explaining.

Power out for the next 5+ hours, so refrigeration/light/air-conditioning/cooking are a no-go. Lucky to have friends nearby who are unaffected and able to put us up (as many of you already know, we’ve got a toddler and infant. Infant requires a refrigerated supplement at the moment, amongst other things we can’t just “deal with”)

Not an angry rant, no one’s at fault and we’re very lucky to have friends.

At the start of the storm I was explaining to my toddler why we shouldn’t go out in the thunder to plant flower seeds like we were going to. Then rain picks up, wind too, and we’re amidst the closest lightning strikes I’ve ever experienced. Wonder if we’ll see what got hit when we drive down the road.
