Rant thread - share your grievances, not just audio

Right but Android is also a mobile device platform and users can do global EQ. I’m not sure what exactly not allowing this has to do with security or why it’s “impossible” as opposed to Apple not caring enough about this kind of service to devote resources to allow for it.

LOL - I can see why some don’t like the QKZxHBB set. I’m not a massive fan of the looks now, but admittedly I did enjoy the aesthetics of the shells at first. After owning them for a few weeks now, I can’t stop my self from thinking “A simple black resin cap and a small printing of the logos on the side of the shell may have been sufficient.”

I do really enjoy the looks of the KBear Rosefinch though. Finger print magnets? Absolutely. But when you first are presented with them, they’re real stunners in my opinion.

I am not now, nor have ever been an Apple partisan. I am wedded to the Apple ecosystem only because my work required using software that was only available on Apple hardware for a very long time before being adapted or developed for Windows-based hardware. Also, I purchased lots of music on iTunes before streaming entered the picture. I use an Apple iPhone, which I like, though agree it’s closed ecosystem is sometimes frustrating.

I subscribe to Apple Music only because they now stream lossless audio at a better price than Qobuz or Tidal do (and I’m not sure Tidal’s MQA isn’t snake oil). But I mostly listen using Android-based DAPs.

Honestly, if I were just starting now, I’d probably go with Windows and Android because it seems you can get more for your money than you can from Apple. Still, I think Apple makes exceptionally good products that really work as advertised, and are easy for non-tech savvy geezers like me to use.

I have always been turned off by Apple products and continue to be.

Time to break out the 22, setup on those little fuckers, and teach them why you’re supposed to at least have the courtesy to leave the scene of your crimes. Then make yourself a nice Davy Crockett special edition hat and wear it proudly to ward off any raccoons who might think they’re slick enough to try this in the future.

Android also doesn’t have the features you mentioned that I quoted from you above. And can’t, because they don’t have that tight bottom level control that Apple maintains. When you install software on a mobile device, you have to grant permissions so that software can access parts of your phone. And it accesses more than you’d think. That opens doors that Apple doesn’t want opened. Some of it is a legitimate security risk that they’ve deemed unacceptable, but part of it is them also Apple being Apple.

Just picked up a second trap. The first one we set off when I got home yesterday, but was empty with a whole can of sardines stolen from it.

We’ll see if I’ve got any better luck tonight.

Raccoons are crafty and illusive. They’re very good at jackin’ food off of those traps without getting caught so you may have to try for a while before it works. I have to deak with these things all the time at my ranch property and they can really fuck things up and cause aome damage.

I feel for you and I wish you luck. And don’t forget to track down where/how they got in and seal that area up or you’ll be dealing with this again. Keep your chin up and you’ll come out on top.

Already patched the roof where they tore a hole open. No stopping that without replacing the roof with a metal roof, and I don’t have that kinda money. Both traps have plastic and tape wrapped around the back half were the food is with the food against the back wall, so they have to either tear through the plastic and tape to reach in, or go through the entrance. I’m fully aware how intelligent they are, and why they’re known as master problem solvers. My folks, particularly my step-dad, just thinks they’re a nuisance (and in my perspective, sorely underestimates them).

You know, with how expensive ammunition is these days you’d think it would be well made, but if you know what you’re looking at you’d be surprised how much of the boxed ammo you buy is flawed from jump street. Particularly when you’re looking for match grade or better high caliber ammo for extreme distance precision shooting the stuff they sell for that is crap. You can spend a few hundred bucks on a top shelf box and when you break it down you’ll find that maybe 20%-25% is actually built to a standard that would perform under those circumstances.

As a result, many distance shooters start making hand loads as I’m currently doing, but even doing that I have a growing pile of reject shells and primers that just aren’t properly made and I’m paying for the best shit you can buy so the problem is even worse and more rampant further down the pecking order.

Thankfully, the gun shop I buy my materials from has a refusal return policy with their supplier. Regardless, how hard is it to properly turn and form and damn brass casing? How difficult is it to properly press a primer together and center it? It just irritates me to no end. If I was still deciding what to do for a career and music wasn’t an option maybe going into precision ammo manufacturing to raise the bar would’ve been a good area to get into because this stuff isn’t precision half the time. It’s just slightly less junky.

Maybe the wisest course might be to go further than merely being turned off by iOS or Andriod (or any platform), and turn off the smart phone altogether. The toxic digital environment we currently have is driving millions into siloed tribes, where only those who already share a particular world view are seen and heard, so people come to wrongly believe they alone possess the ‘canonical world view’. Thus, everyone who doesn’t becomes the ‘other’, and must be silenced. We see the violent fruits of this toxic environment every day now.

I have not turned off my phone just yet (because of music, mainly), but severely limit participation on widely-used (and abused) social media platforms like Facebook (only relatives and close friends), and have never used Twitter. I post here occasionally because it’s a limited-interest group, and that’s okay. I do use Instagram, but only to post photos without comment. Otherwise, it seems clear to me that for too many, social media truly is the Devil, and could well be our doom.

And if that weren’t bad enough, once you do either find quality ammo or get loading your own down pat, you have to go through testing the ammo to see which particular load from which company your specific gun happens to like the best. There’s a part of me that would love to get into long distance shooting, but I know how much of a headache it can be, so I’ve held off.

It’s my meditation. It’s where I find my zen outside of music. Long distance shooting and all that goes into it is incredibly satisfying for me. It never ceases to be a challenge as there is always a further target, a different caliber/gun, tighter groupings, different atmospheric conditions, etc and there’s always more to learn.

I have been doing hand loads ever since I was in the Marines, but funnily enough this issue never bothered me until the government wasn’t paying for my ammo anymore. I just hate it when a company claims to manufacture ammo or components to a particular spec and yet anyone who knows what they’re looking at has to reject like a third to half of what they bought in the best of circumstances which proves that the company has only achieved the specs they advertise at a rate that would earn them a failing grade in school. That’s BS and it’s so frustrating when you’re paying a premium for it!

I am not ready to go that route. I need to be connected because of work, anyway. But when I am on my time I don’t pay a lot of attention to the phone. I don’t engage in the larger social media platforms. They have become a waste of time. Just as you said, I am not in those toxic environments. If one allows oneself to be consumed by this insanity, not sure what to say.

My social outreach is much more enjoyed on smaller, more sensible platforms like this. This is a good group. I feel like there is a much better chance of having intelligent discussions here. And it is centered around something we all have passion for.

Im pretty fuckin livid right now

A little backstory
In Israel we do 3 years (now 2.8) of mandatory military service, after which we get called all from time to time for reserve duty, kinda like jury duty, normally its a few days a year but recently it has been up a lot (60 days in 2020, 45 days in 2021, 20 days 2022).

Im 36 right now and have been doing reserve duty for almost 15 years in a medical company part of rescue regiment (because im a medic i have to do this until im 45). Basically in cases of war/natural disaster/ national emergency we get deployed and help/rescue the civilian population (during Covid we did a lot of testing and ran “quarantine hotels” for civilians)

  • Over the last 10 years or so ive been the company’s sergeant basically handling all the logistics and getting things done.

  • For the past 6 and half years iv’e also been acting as the company’s XO, why? because the CO kicked out the XO due to incompetence.

  • For the Last 2 years ive also been acting as the company’s CO (doing all 3 jobs) because our CO was promoted and no one bothered to get a replacement or even informing me until i had to show up for a call i got.

During this time ive been hounding the division officers in charge of assigning officers getting brushed off every time (Unlike normal company’s medical officer have to be a medic/nurse/paramedic/Doctor so its handling from the medical branch)

As you can guess doing 3 jobs at the same time and being a commanding officer for 40+ men and women is exhausting to say the least (also very problematic when you have to be at 3 places at once). But the cherry on top is that im not an officer , now i dont care too much about the rank itself but i dont have the authority to do certain actions, as well as not being to bring in a prompt one of my soldiers to be my replacement as company sergeant to help offload some of the work, because i cant hold the title of CO or XO because im not an officer, great right?

But there was a “light” at the end of the tunnel, a officers course happen to open up (now these are very rare for reserve soldiers) and would be mean i would have to go back to the army for around 50 days + being treated like an 18 year old private, not the greatest deal but hell if i get the rank i deserve and it lets me off-load some of the work.

Today i got the call that im not getting in…

Why?
Because "lower priority "…

Now ive met some of the folks going into course, the roles they are suppose to take are not officers roles. Basiclly the only reason they got in, was because they were they were stationed at place “higher up the food chain” (they are the same rank as me but they were placed at the command level, unlike us “grunts”)

Now i get shafted pretty much in every way, im still stuck doing 3 people’s job and the 50 days iv’e cleared my schedule for the next 50 days (im a freelancer) meaning I have ZERO income planned for almost 2 months (you get payed when getting in resrve duty).

Now i gonna fucking raise hell, but im pretty sure im fucked… the “benefit” of being a “grunt” is you can scream and raise hell all you want but as long as your not an officer no one gives two shits"

That sucks man :rage: I know it’s not much consolation but do you the Sgt, XO and CO wages combined if you’re doing all those jobs :man_shrugging:

Nope, the money i get is based on my salary in civilian life regardless of how many roles i have

Well that’s another rant right there :+1:

I can go off, on and on on a variety of things, but this really tipped the scales.
The idea that you not only volunteer and actively peruse becoming an officer and then you are told no because some office jockey wants it and will do jack shit with it is just pat him self on the back is what gets me going…

I just started learning French with this Paul Noble course. He keeps doing this really annoying trick where he asks you how you think a phrase would translate in French that’s similar to other phrases, then says “You probably said it like this, but actually it’s this whole other thing that I never taught you.”
After the third time I was so annoyed I deleted the whole thing. I decided to return to it today and he did it again! :face_vomiting:
