Rupert Neve RNHP Precision Headphone Amplifier

Does it pair well with most headphones?

TBH yes as long as they aren’t particularity power hungry

Watched Z use it to run argons. I don’t have anything that hungry. Most power hungry cans I have are the aeon 2 closed (one the way), Verite (on the way), and hd800S and Hd650s. Oh and mh751 which is obviously easy. And not worried about iems.

I mean for the 650 and the 800s I would say go for a nice tube amp, but it will work nicely with the 2 closed and verite (but even that might be more enjoyable on a tube)

At that price you could get a hagerman tuba or feliks echo or woo wa6 or bottlehead crack with speedball, and that would pair really well with the verite, 650, and 800s. The rnhp would work well with all of them, but I think a tube could be the way to go here perhaps

Yeah. I have a darkvoice with some vintage tung sol tubes. I have the thx 789 but was thinking of going with the rnhp for an improvement. I guess I could look at better tube amps and keep the 789. But the rnhp sounds amazing haha.

It’s a noticable step up in overall sound quality compared to the 789… For sure

So here is the thing. I would urge you to upgrade your tube amp and keep the 789 in this situation. I think it would benefit more of your headphones

I haven’t had an opportunity to hear any of those, though I’ve read the reviews. Any opinion on how these stack up against one another? Don’t really want to build a bottlehead crack due to my time is always a factor (stay busy).

And I’ll probably get a hd600 again because of the tubes.

Hnmm. So my favorite out of the bunch is the tuba, I think it’s the most refined sounding and also a great value for the performance it offers. I think the wa6 or crack with speedball are more tuby sounding amps, pretty fun sound to them, pretty energetic. The echo also pretty refined sounding but I think that you would want to get a tuba at this point imo

So it’s been a little while since I received the RNHP and I’ve had quite a bit of time to listen. My verdict is basically this is the best sounding amp I’ve owned. Coming from a Monolith THX 788 Desktop to this is not the biggest leap on most of my cans… This sound sig is not as “sterile” sounding as the 788 and a bit more “musical” with a neutral warm sound. I do prefer most of my collection on the rnhp vs the 788. Stuff like the 4xx and t50rp probably would be better off with the extra power of the THX, but the rnhp drives them fine regardless.

The Focal Clears is where it starts to get kinda ridiculous, the differences between the two is such a huge gap that based on this comparison I would think the rnhp would be a lot more money than it actually is. These cans just straight up sound better on the neve in every way. Better dynamics and layering, soundstage and imaging feel more surrounding and precise, Bass response while being not the most in quantity feels tighter and more pronounced. By far the biggest difference is tonality, the clears have more warmth and just sound full of life on the rnhp. Going back to the 788 with the clears after listening to this amp for almost a week was kinda painful in a way.

I’ve always believed that amps can change the way a headphone sounds, but never to this extent. I’m pretty astounded tbh. I’m sure there is probably a good deal of mental fuckery going on here as well, but hey if it sounds better…

definitely looking forward to pairing higher tier headphones with this amp in the future.

don’t tempt me… honestly I’m probably gonna go with Aeolus next and upgrade to a better tube amp while I’m at it.

And going from the rnhp to a tube amp on an aeolus is another level of mental fuckery.

ZMF really love tubes lol

how well do you think the aeolus would perform on the RNHP?

It performs well on it, and it was a very noticable improvement over the atom I had, if I hadn’t been interested in trying tubes at all, I still would have been very satisfied with it.

cool that’s good to hear, I have a Darkvoice at the moment so I probably wouldn’t upgrade right away if the neve is a good pairing. Also my wallet would probably appreciate the break lol.
