šŸ”· Schiit Asgard 3

After a few hours listening I like the A3 much more than the SP200. The claims on this forum of the A3 being better about space and sounding more natural are on point. The treble is still present and detailed without sounding as forward or crossing into sibilant as often as the SP200 does. The A3 also just sounds more weighty and confident, so to speak. This doesnā€™t mean colored, just that it sounds like itā€™s more in control and effortless. Itā€™s weird to state it this way, but itā€™s almost like the A3 is the confident guy that goes about doing a good job quietly and letting his work speak for itself where the SP200 is a mediocre performer who has to tell everyone how good he is. I know, weird description but thatā€™s what it sounds like to me just a few hours in.

Hey thatā€™s not a bad description lol

Alright my Asgard 3 just got hereā€¦ and holy shit it is like 3x the size of my Magni 3, I did not expect it to be this large. Time to set it up and give it a listenā€¦

Topping e30 and Magni 3 for comparison

It is a beefy unit for sure lol, not insubstantial

The heft surprised me too. But wait until you hear it!

After a few days of listening to the Asgard 3 with DT880-600, HD6XX, (to my surprise) modded M1060, and now my newly arrived Edition XX, I am impressed. Prior to the A3, Iā€™ve logged dozens-to-hundreds of listening hours over the past couple years on a Magni 3, Atom, Liquid Spark, SP200, Loxjie P20, and Darkvoice. The A3 is making me quickly forget those amps - save maybe the Darkvoice (more on this later).

Build quality is first rate. The physical build has never been the issue with Schiit. The A3 is well made, and surprisingly heavy. The power supply that Schiit is apparently taking almost a financial loss on (at least thatā€™s what Currawong said in a video) adds quite a bit of heft. The 1/4" headphone jack is reasonably snug as well. I bring this up because the combination of the heavy power supply being on the left side of the unit (as you face the front) and the headphone jack being on the right means that when I push a headphone plug in, the whole unit rotates a little bit counterclockwise with that heavy PSU acting like a pin. At some point that will annoy me enough that Iā€™ll cut a foam rubber pad down to its size and put it underneath.

As for sound quality, the A3 is a big step up to all of ~$100 amps I just mentioned and, IMO, is even a pretty noticeable step up from the SP200. Itā€™s sound signature is probably best described as neutral-warm. It doesnā€™t really emphasize any particular frequency range that I can tell, but its low end has a weight and effortlessness to it that makes it sound a little warmer than the Atom or SP200. It seems to offer a flavor of the warmth the Liquid Spark does, although to a higher quality, but without as much of the high frequency roll off. The SP200 - which I sold to get this amp so I canā€™t do a direct A/B - has a lot more forward sounding treble. I know the SP200 supposedly measures flat, but itā€™s top end is much more ā€œin your earsā€ than the A3ā€™s. Some may interpret this as the SP200 having more detail. I donā€™t think thatā€™s the case. The A3 has plenty of detail, it just doesnā€™t have to go around telling you it has detail. The first major sonic difference I noticed though is that the A3 has a much stronger overall spatial presentation than the SP200, or any of the other cheaper solid state amps I mentioned. On the DT880 in particular, the soundstage, imaging, separation, and layering rivals the holographic presentation the Darkvoice with a Sylvania VT-231 pre and RCA power tube could get out of the 880, and doing so with the cleanliness of solid state to go with it.

Itā€™s truly going to be hard to go back to listening to $100 amps again if I need to. Iā€™ll keep at least one of them around to have a starter system for when I eventually, in some non-pandemic future, have an office that isnā€™t in my basement again. The Darkvoice still has its place on my main desk for the time being, though. It gets just a touch more bass extension out of the 880, and a bit more yet out of the 6XX. Overall, I think I still prefer the 6XX out of the DV, but the A3 definitely closed the gap between the 6XXā€™s solid state sound and tube sound more than I expected. Plus, tube rolling is just plain fun.

In a surprise, the A3 made my M1060 the most listenable Iā€™ve heard out of it. The 1060 still has a boxy, peaky midrange and some odd timbre in the mids, but the A3 filled in the sound around those peaks to a level that they were less in-your-face. Itā€™s not a magic fix for the 1060, but it did well enough that I found a couple albums where I actually genuinely enjoyed listening to the A3 + 1060ā€¦for like a day, then the Edition XX showed up.

A full review of the Edition XX will happen in the next week, probably, but letā€™s just say that the A3 + XX combo is addicting right now. Really a dynamite combo so far.

OK, Iā€™ll stop rambling. Enjoy the music everyone!

Well written. Iā€™ve also been enjoying my A3. Iā€™ll be interested to hear the Edition XX notes.

Alright been listening to this basically all day. It definitely sounds better than the Magni 3 I was using. The power is on another level. I basically havenā€™t ran it up past halfway at all on any pair of headphones Iā€™ve used, but been using mostly my HD600 today.

Everything seems to sound very nice with no distortion, that I can tell at least. I will say that listening to my HD600 this gives it just enough bass that I just was not getting with my Magni 3. It definitely seems a little warm, but not too overbearing. I quite like this sound signature though, I think it really gives it more depth I guess? Not sure if thatā€™s the right wordā€¦ Also recently upgraded my DAC to Topping E30 which probably helps that as well. Listening to Zealots of Stockholm by Chilidish Gambino was a real treat though. All the frequencies balanced out really well and it just made me smile because it sounds so good! It feels much more immersive and intimate which is pretty neat.

The unit gets much hotter than my Magni as well. I have my DAC on top of it to left side so it isnā€™t covering any vent hole, but I think it looks quite nice. Love this unit so far, definitely worth $200.

Was pleasantly surprised with how good the E30 looks with schiit products (or schiit style in my case with the RebelAmp) lol. You actually using it as a pre-amp? Because you can switch it to DAC only mode when you power it on.

Uhh donā€™t think I was using it as a pre-amp.

Also I have some bad newsā€¦ The on/off switch when I went to turn it on this morning has shifted to the left and now it wonā€™t turn on lol. Not even sure how this happened. Hopefully I can get it fixed for free though as this is literally my 2nd day owning it :frowning:

dang man. did you open it up to see what happened? that switch is solid af usually

I havenā€™t yetā€¦ I think I will do that right now before I send Schiit an e-mail though.

mightā€™ve just shifted internally. keep us posted.

No help here and iā€™m sorry to see that  but Iā€™m listen to ā€œGenesis Turn it on againā€ no lie lolā€¦hope you get it sorted :+1:

I unscrewed the top 4 screws but Iā€™m scared to unscrew anything on the bottomā€¦ and the top wonā€™t just slide offā€¦ Also canā€™t find any video online about how to take it apart. Might just send in a warranty e-mail, this sucks

As much as I love those types of switches I wish they used a rocker style instead of toggle as it has much less room for error and easier to turn on and off for the reach around to the back

did you pull the volume knob off?

pulls straight out with no tools and then the top will come off
