Can’t see how that would work. My charging port is on the bottom of the DAP. In use as a transport that port sees a line-out cable which then hooks up to a “printer cable” to feed into the DAC. Not sure where I could insert the powered USB in that chain.
I am doubtful on the low power angle. I think it is just a case of they don’t speak the same language.
I have not. But wouldn’t there still be a communication problem?
Yes it is most likely the case that the DAP only has a driver for USB Audio 1.0 and Unison requires USB Audio 2.0, which BTW is why it won’t work on Windows 7 without a driver.
Not if the adapter is compatible with the dap. There might be one that is.
Bifrost 2 faq page, I am still on win 7 and was not happy usb was not supported as its the better input on the bf2.
Blockquote So what platforms does your Unison USB input support?
Actually, the question should be “What platforms support your Unison USB input?” since our Unison USB input is 100% UAC2 compliant (that is, USB Audio Class 2, the accepted standard for USB audio transmission.) So, here you go:
- Linux. As in, most popular streamers, from the Sonore MicroRendu to the Salk Streamer. Note “most.” Also most Linux distros that support UAC2 natively will be plug and play. Please note that we cannot provide detailed technical support for Linux.
- Windows 10. Yes, Windows 10 only. We don’t provide UAC2 drivers for earlier versions of Windows, sorry. Yes, it is time to step into the present (not the future, Windows 10 has been out for a couple of years now.) Yes, it is time to upgrade. Yes, it’s worth it. Windows 10 is actually a very nice platform.
- Mac OSX. From 10.10 on up, Macs are good to go. This now includes Mac OS 11.
- iOS. From iOS7 on up, iOS devices work with USB Camera Connection Kit, Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, a Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter, or directly with the new USB-C models.
- Android. Most Android devices that shipped with Android M or above will work using a USB OTG cable. Some may require separate player software, like USB Audio Player Pro.
What tubes are you running into he Vali 2+? I know for a more relaxed sound the JJ tubes are supposed to be good.
My BF2 will not communicate with my DAP. It does work with the computer, but that was not what I bought it for.
So, the SMSL SU-8 will be staying as my DAC of choice.
Too bad. Maybe something like the Eitr or a Pi2AES (https://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/dummies-guide-to-pi2aes-throw-away-your-pc-or-laptop.8878/) would be compatible with your DAP. From the Eitr/Pi2AES s/pdif coax, you can then feed the signal to Bifrost 2’s coax.
Thanks for the thought, but I am thinking that the DAP would still not talk to the DAC, regardless of interface?
I agree with this at this point, i do not own a DAP but the understanding of them i am getting through your journey has me guessing that as a standalone system they are not made to necessarily integrate w/ other products as flexibly as a computer or streamer which would be proper explanation for your current issue. Good luck
Yeah DAPs are pretty tricky, but people have used their DAPs with Raspberry Pi and Volumio to connect to desktop dacs and amps (https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/dap-with-desktop-headphone-amp-dac.12651/). Pi2AES is pretty much that. You might be SOL with the Eitr. Of course, there’s a learning curve in setting up the Pi2AES.
At this point I will have to give up on the BF2. They offered me an RA, but it is punishing:
- no refund on original shipping
- I have to pay shipping for return
- 15% re-stocking fee
- I am out the original tax fee that I paid to FedEx to get it to Canada.
So, a more than $300.00 loss (Canadian $'s).
Think I will try to sell privately.
Expensive lesson learned.
You can easily sell the BF2. I bet if you put a WTS post it won’t last long.
Why not upgrade the DAP?
It’ll work fine if you can send it SPDIF, the issue is purely the USB protocol in use, and the fact the BF2 Unison USB interface doesn’t support the now legacy USB Audio 1.0 standard.
Any D2D interface that the DAP will drive would work.
Or get a different DAP
So you feel pretty confident that if I got a USB to S/PDIF adapter I would be sailing?
That would be a MUCH better solution!
As long as it supports USB audio 1.0 (most will) and the DAP can drive it, it will work.
Your bypassing Unison by using a D2D converter.
Ooooo. I am on Amazon.ca now.
Topping D10 may have the digital outs you want.
I ordered a convertor from Amazon.ca just now. Hopefully this solves my problem and I can start enjoying my new DAC.
Thanks for the glimmer of hope!
