Schiit Bifrost 2

Hmmm, for the BF2’s that fail the vibrating chassis thing seems to be a common symptom. I’m not aware of a fix and you’ll need to contact Schiit. Sorry. Sucks.

Yup. Just happened to me a few weeks ago. Turn around time was about two weeks.

So my BF2 arrived today, after a short 8 week wait, only for me to find out the USB drivers do NOT work on Windows 7, and I don’t have an optical out on my PC  Will I still get killer sound out of it, if I use some USB-to-optical device…?

Get a used Eitr and call it a day

Gonna give this guy a shot for now.

Is there a reason why you are still sticking with Windows 7? The BF2 has a really awesome USB audio solution. Shiit’s Unison USB with galvanic isolation!

Is 10 free? I know some of my games and game development software/tools don’t work correctly(or at all) on 10, so I’m hesitant on that front, but I could of course do a separate 10 install for testing. Migrating your files and getting used to a whole new OS always sucks, when the one you have works perfectly fine  XP 4 LIFE!

Hmm, I don’t think games not working on Windows 10 is an issue. I have been using Windows 10 for quite sometime without any issues in the gaming sphere.

As for cost, I have no idea! But it you are happy and comfortable with 7, by all means!

Oh, I’ll be forced out of my comfort zone soon enough, as always. Probably from needing GPU drivers only available on newer OS… But hopefully a new gaming OS will be out by then, or something actually great(Win 12?).

I think you can put your windows 7 key in when you install 10 and it works

You could use a streamer like a raspberry pi if you’re adamant about keeping Windows 7. Though that is more money out of pocket.

Windows 10 is, at this point in its life, an absolutely solid and stable (dare I say, great?) OS.

I disagree about 10. I feel like every update is always a bit of a beta test and i put it off as long as possible. Do they break like they used to? No. But it likes to force itself on you.

I also prefer 7s file explorer and search but you can always mod those.

In the end all new cpus for the past few years requires 10 and will not work with 7. If you go to load windows 7 and its connected to the internet it may say "hey do you just want to go straight to 10?”

Windows 7 has been end of life for consumers so you won’t get any security updates. This I think is the most important reason to update.

That’s what I do on 7, to make it look & feel like XP/98.

So if I try to install 10, it may not even work with my 7700K cpu! (looks like it is compatible, or at least mostly?) Great lol. Oh well, I’ll get to that crap when I do. Just don’t understand why my d50s DAC does NOT have an optical output I could use for a situation exactly like this, for having such a killer, high-spec chip… :frowning: BF2 doesn’t even have that, either. I have found a problem lol.

You have 7 feel like xp?! Ok that is a little wild. The intel 7 gem is also pretty modern. My 5930k and the 4th gen was 10 compatible.

I disable just about everything I can. Black desktop background, all disabled explorer special effects, hidden taskbar, nice, grey, small font everything.

If you need optical out, the Topping D10 has it, as does the Micca Origen G2. Definitely not Bifrost level performance, but serviceable if the optical out is a must.

The optical output is not Bifrost level? But Bifrost doesn’t have that, so what’s to compare? The conversion of USB to optical is a separate section(done by it’s own, specific processor), before that digital signal is processed to analog, right? I’m not sure if there is much greater processing/significance to the digital-to-digital processing section, or the later digital-to-analog section. If the digital-to-digital conversion is easy to do cleanly, then a beefy chip/DAC wouldn’t be needed, just to get good optical(to send to my Bifrost).

I think @FiCurious was saying the DDC in the D10(s) does not perform at the same level of quality that the BF2 performs. You’ll be bottlenecking the BF2’s performance of you go that route. You’re correct that BF2 has no optical out so it’s not a direct comparison. It’s still that the D10 is a very entry level ddc and will hamstring the BF2.

You probably have a decision to make. Your 3 options as I see are:

  1. buy a more expensive ddc that is compatible with Win 7. $400 is probably the entry point for such a thing.

  2. bite the bullet and upgrade to Win 10

  3. buy a mobo with optical or coax spdif output.

TBH, as time goes on fewer and fewer usb audio devices will maintain compatibility with older operating systems. I would strongly consider upgrading the OS. It’s also likely your cheapest solution here.
