I don’t really know what you’re asking for. I was able to get my phone connected through the use of a powered usb hub though I perceived a lack of staging and macro dynamics when compared to my laptop. I promptly returned the USB hub.
There, you did get the phone to connect. That is what I was wondering about. FWIW I prefer my laptop’s sound to the phone as well, though my particular phone sounds pretty damned good!
I’m just surprised there’s an audible difference honestly. I wonder why. I like the idea of a tablet for music I’ve seen some people do that
I think that is a good idea. Basically I was messing around wit the phone as a source just to see if I could even do it. I had the idea that I wanted to have another source on hand other than the PC. I used an Audio Quest Cinnamon USB-C to USB-B cable and it sounded really good! In fact, with the Android version of the Amazon music app you get more features and the Dolby Atmos plug-in, so you get that spatial sound as well. Cool for some things, not so much for other things, but it’s fun to play with. An android based tablet could also leverage that feature set. Could be fun!
At the end of the day, however, I like the overall sound signature that comes out of the PC. The Bang & Olufsen audio chipset is superb. Of curse, the PC is also running through a DDC, so that might help things a bit.
@Raptor168 I had an hp chromebook with the B&O and loved that sound. Windows computer now. Bought an Amazon kindle fire hd 10 on sale last year. Recently got amazon hd music and tried it on that kindle. It plays well from usb to my dac, but the surprise was 24/48 from just the headphone jack with a 58x or even ksc75 is crazy good.
Some synergy there I suppose. Anyway, fun! Plan to hook that into the aux of my integrated amp to see what that sounds like. (Already do that from my dac) We have so many ways to play music now, lol!! Sorry, I know it’s a bifrost thread, but…
Just noticed I was the last one to post here. Ha!
Well, as mentioned elsewhere I finally bought the BF2 to go with my
Asgard 3. A good match for my budget, I feel. I wanted a bit more warmth and body
from my Sundara and DT 880/600 than my E30 dac provided, which the recently purchased Nordost usb cable and a Loki mini helped with.
The BF 2 however does all that and more, as I am certain those who have heard it are aware. (Haven’t even used the Loki yet, lol.)
In short, as an update, very different but also very enjoyable. I really like the
soundstage depth and presence, as well as the instrument separation and quite accurate timbre. And the DT880 sounds great. Of course, now I want to
hear this rig with a better headphone! In due time.
The BF2 is a legend at its price point it performs very well technically, comes with a versatile set of inputs, no real compromise when using SE or BAL outputs as with many other DACs, and a very accommodating foot print making it easy to fit on just about any desk or audio shelf. I myself also really like its sound signature and I love the slam it has, but this is personal and library related so take that with a grain of salt. All in all, it is an easy DAC to recommend and could be endgame for many.
@Delta9K Thanks for the further confirmation! I agree, and am very happy with
the BF2. And I’m probably one of the “many” lol.
You see, the reason it’s called “Bifrost” is because it transports you to realizing you need a whole new level of gear nearly instantaneously
Glad you’re enjoying, Tim! BF2 still sticks in my mind as one of those moments of “Oh, more really is possible, a lot more”
Yes indeed, darn it! Kidding but too true! I’m finding that any limitations I hear are
either in the recording or elsewhere in my chain. Knew that going in,
but just had to do it finally. NO regrets! Listening to a new find on AMHD.
Album is Gordian Knot by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Dolby available.
Amazing SS and imaging. First cut T. O. P. Adjacent is just kick ass, lol. Still trying to figure out the playback setting issue. (in my PM to you.) Also AMHD
had a feature toggle to enable their exclusive mode which is supposed to be like Wasapi is to Foobar. I still know precious little about all that sort of thing.
Thanks for the comments and support.
Basically, Exclusive mode does a couple of things. First it allows the app to block any other system sounds from interrupting the music stream. The downside to this is that if you use an EQ program like Peace EQ, it disables it, which for me is a bummer! I like my Peace EQ, but running super clean in Exclusive mode has its uses depending on the kind of music you are listening to. I have read that it also allows the player to stream in the best possible quality. There is some controversy as to whether it plays bit perfect. I don’t know about all that and I don’t much care, really. I’m gettin 24/192 either way whether or not I’m in that mode, and it sounds spectacular. Personally, I leave it off most of the time. Like I said, I love my Peace EQ!!
But yeah, the Frost does a hell of a job. I’m happy for you, man! I remember when I first fired mine up. I was on the SU-8 at the time, a pretty decent DAC in its own right. It was an eye-opening experience. Enjoy.
@Raptor168 Thanks, I appreciate the info and comments. If AMHD’s “now playing at, etc” is correct I get 24/48 for everything and If I try to change the setting on my laptop’s “advanced” page…“apply” I get a warning that says being used by
another app (BF2?) and if proceed that app may not work, so haven’t changed it. Not sure what to do…again music teaching/playing was my thing, not electronics!! Sounds great even now, but would like to get that figured out.
PS the only eq I use is occassionally the LokI.
I’d close all apps, then change the setting, then open apps again.
Uh, yeah. Ordered. It will get the full WaveTheory treatment in due time.
Stay tuned!
Going to have to do more checking in on that thread. Also ordered. Many thanks, good sir.
I’d be curious to find out if you have to send in your existing board as part of the upgrade and/or if you could revert back by reinstalling the previous board and associated firmware if you did the upgrade and it wasn’t for you.
EDIT:
Well this has been answered with the announcement from Schiit regarding that the new firmware works with both 2 & 2/64
Oof. I want. I want bad.
I don’t get the impression you return the old board. We’ll find out how the firmware thing works. In theory it should be quick and easy seeing as how BF2 has a modular construction, which presumably means upgrades like this were always planned.
There is nothing about sending the old board back in in Jason’s post, and in later posts he says that he’s looking into whether or not you will be able to simply slot the old board back in and use it, or if you will have to roll back to the old firmware.
