🔷 Schiit Magnius

were you surprised by the Modius? or the Asgard 3?

Very surprised by the Asgard 3 because of the combination of the price and past schiit products. The modius was a nice dac but I wasn’t super impressed by it but it was still very good. Also I got my magnius today, still listening to it, I’ll probably give some more thoughts tommorow

it appears that they sat up after being lazy when all these other’s came in and started to outperform at same or even better pricing. it’s like they’re taking their hobby serious again

I can hook you up with someone selling a Space Tech Labs SE-6BQ5 for $650.

well, you bought the Magnius to pair with the Modius, no?

Yes I did lol. I still like the dac of course but it wasn’t as impressive as the bifrost 2 from them in terms of performance for money imo

I looked at them back in the winter when I was researching. Some very pricey stuff.
That amp certainly looks cool.
I don’t think I would go boutique again. I would prefer something a little more mainstream with a following and a knowledge base to draw from. Nothing urgent, I will just keep an eye out.

Actually right now I have it hooked into my main desk setup, I’ll try the modius later, getting a sense of what it can do with my main dacs I’m more familiar with

so you’re saying the Bifrost 2 has 3x the performance for it’s 300% higher price over the Modius?

No, but I would be more inclined to say the bifrost 2 has better bang for the buck, to me the bifrost 2 is a more compelling buy

ahhh…it performs with the big boys for a lower price. gotcha!

Yeah kinda where the modius is moreso just fitting right into where you would expect it would preformance wise, the bifrost 2 is offering something more unique and different compared to competitors for its performance category

so, what else is there in the $200 range that competes with the Modius and has a similar or better clean, detailed and warm sound signature?

I mean something that’s on the more neutral and clean side of things, the enog 2 pro is a good alternative with a similar feature set, honestly the topping E30 is pretty comparable if you don’t need balanced (but slightly lower preforming), the topping d50s/smsl su8 is going to be a bit more bright and leaner but fairly detailed. These dacs do sound different but it’s not really radically different tbh, the differences in dacs get way more pronounced and significant in the higher end imo

Yes
The Magnius has an external PSU to handle the bulk of the AC-DC conversion and voltage step down, a protection diode and then nothing to prevent grid noise from entering the circuit.

Edit: All this said, I have no idea what is inside the power brick.

Also yes

indeed…but in my particular question, I wanted to know what else is available in that price bracket that is equivalent. you gave examples, but I don’t think any of them lean on the warm side…their more neutral.

If you are looking warmer, the Zen dac is a pretty solid example. Also the e30 is slightly warmer and smoother leaning. The modius is slightly warmer and smoother leaning but honestly you could still call it neutral, it’s nowhere near as colored as like a zen dac

a mod can split this into another conversation if they want…but what would be some good examples of reasonably priced but effective power filtration gear? ASR just did one on an AudioQuest device and proved it’s actually shit…does nothing but act as a really expensive power bar.

Palmer Purifier would be one example. It is meant for guitar paddles, but works nicely for other applications too.

Inside you find a fuse (chokes don’t like overcurrent, turns them into heaters), inductors, common mode chokes and some capacitors (and an LED, to indicate power being present).

Didn’t write down who sent me this picture

I am not surprised honestly. It can probably filter switching noise from a switchmode PSU to an extent, is missing a lot of stuff to be complete though.

ASRs measurements in case of the Jitterbug leave some room for improvements. Especially measureing output ripple is a tough nut as your probes can pick up the noise easily. Video with info

it’s only $20…not a bad option to just get and have on hand and try as you try out different gear.

we have a slight power problem here in Rupert. we’re so isolated that after a bad power outage, the city installed a generator system that can supply the whole municipality. they test it frequently and when they do that, power goes out for a few moments. it’s quite annoying, to be honest.

just have to find someone that has it in stock!

I’m assuming you’d need to buy some form of extension cable to go from the conditioner to your piece of equipment? anyone make those or are they assuming you’re a DiY sort? :stuck_out_tongue:

actually…while we’re talking, there’s that Furman part for about $99. how would it compare…or would you still want one of these still?
