šŸ”· Schiit Modius

A $500 stack to destroy the new drop/ifi offering. That thing seems super weird and an amp with a button for ā€œone specific headphoneā€ really bothers me for some reason.

Do it schitt! Destroy them!

Yup when someone comes out with a paired set of gear, u wonder how it will work or what has been compromised with other stuff…it does state their is a bypass all this stuff button?

Sounds like some hardware EW built in to adjust the freq curve? or magic software programmed into an EEPROM with selects?

A.

I really don’t think they’ll sell that much of these. I don’t get it.

I really want to try the modius but the lack of features is killing me. I like having volume control and a remote, bluetooth would be nice but unnecessary. I think generally people say schiit’s house sound is a tad on the warm/dark side and I think that would be beneficial with my overly analytical gear. All the SMSL and topping stuff is on the analytical side, and I would love to have something that isn’t like that, however I don’t know if I can lose the convenience of remote/volume/bluetooth even if it costs a bit more.

I would like to see a higher end modius with remote and volume control at $300, I probably would have already bought it in that case.

The Zen blue is a really good Bluetooth dac that has rca,4.4, and digital outs. So maybe that plus a dac with remote?

Even the bifrost2’s remote doesn’t support volume control. But everything I plug my dacs into have their own volume so I haven’t run into a great use case for a dac controlling volume.

In fact, I returned the RME ADI2 because of issues it’s output volume control caused.

Yeah but the BF2 remote is a frickin weapon in ones hand!! solid billet!! who thunk that?

I have a SA200, so that’s why i like the volume control, makes it possible to plug in low powered stuff. I’ve considered getting the smsl m500 as a secondary amp as well as dac for my desk, however I do want to get something that isn’t smsl, topping or fiio. Nothing against them as brands, just figure they all have a very similar sound. Also I’m not at the point where I’m looking at $500+ stuff for sources.

A really great balanced dac that measures very well…for $199. In a small compact package…that works extremely well…add a good volume pot and the circuitry for this adds to the price and would probably degrade the sonics…

I am sure Schitt will come out with a matching amp for it…fingers crossed!!

This dac has been selling like hot cakes and is now back ordered…

You just cant please all the people all time…the modius has a good audience and if you want a dac with a volume pot there are other alternatives…and most likely make the box much bigger.

I mean something inexpensive, 200$-ish, for a good ā€œlo-cost hi-fiā€ combo.

Oh, OK. But, do you really need balanced? It’s nice and all and I get what the benafits are but isn’t a well implemented single ended amp just as good as balanced in most cases?

The way I see it is that the Modius is meant to stack with the Asgard 3 and the balanced output is for a later upgrade/sidegrade that happens to be balanced like a Rupert Neve RNHP or a Geshelli Erish.

I’m just wishing for more low-cost balanced amps for everyone  heh
But yeah, there’s the Erish now :+1:

Still not convinced there is a good argument for balanced at the $200 price point, your fundamentally trading off component quality for any advantage you get from a differential amp.

The idea behind the modius was to design and deliver a low cost dac that was not Multi Bit or R2R that measured very well for the ASR crowd that only looks at specs for the most part…

This was accomplished in spades.

Adding a balanced function is just icing on the cake…not at all expected for a $199 dac.

It does pair well with the Jot (for full balanced interconnects). But I am thinking your going to see a similar physical size amp coming out soon? that will match the Modius…just my feeling…hmmmm.

Jason Stoddard did reply to a comment on head-fi regarding a ā€œ$199 Magniusā€, but only said he written another chapter of ā€œbookā€ but can’t release it yet.

So I do agree a balance version of either a heresy or a magni might fill the role of a $200 price point balanced amp. Since something that has a modular dac like the asgard/jot lines would drive the price too high.

It looks like the modius is on backorder, placed on the 10th and they said its expected to ship mid September. Just a heads up

For anyone who haven’t seen this. Schiit gets their PCB boards done by Jaxx, a manufacturer about 30 minutes away.

I’m sure there are so many components and parts downstream that have been delayed, let alone covid and staffing related issues or adjustments that need to be made by Jaxx.

Hopefully this can provide insight on why it might take time to deliver their products.
