People seem to forget there still is a global pandemicā¦
Anecdotal addition: my dad is a retired electrical engineer. He told me recently that his old work buddies and professional contacts are seeing supply shortages starting to show up more frequently. In the first few weeks of the pandemic the factories that did assembly of smaller parts had supplies on hand and were able to carry on with some planned runs. But now those supplies are drying up. 18-20 weeks into this mess (at least in US) and weāre starting to see the lockdownās effect on supply chains in earnest.
Curiously, people didnāt buy all of Schiitās toilet paper when covid started.
Sheer luck I guess.

Iām currently running a Grace SDAC which has been okay, but I would like a little more detail and separation. Would the Modius be a step up here, or am I better off saving the extra $500 and going for the Bifrost2?
I guess what Iām really asking here is: Is there a bigger jump from SDAC to Modius or from Modius to Bifrost2? I know the BF2 is the superior DAC but Iām not sure I can really justify $700 for my current setup which Iām mostly happy with.
Thatās a hard one tbh, the modius would be a step up form the sdac, but the bf2 is a noticeable step up from the modius. I would say the modius is more bang for buck, but the bf2 would give you a larger jump in performance. It would honestly depend on what the rest of your signal chain is
Hey @M0N, thanks for the reply. Yeah, currently itās Amazon HD -> SDAC -> JDS Labs Atom / CTH / Dark Voice. The upper echelon of my headphones are the HP-3 and Elegia, but I probably listen to the 177X GO the most. I also signal out from the DAC to Kanto YU2 speakers on my desk.
Holy crap.
Personally for what you have imo I might say consider getting a higher end amp, you should be able to get some pretty nice options in the 500 range, then wait and grab a bf2 later on, I think that would offer you a larger performance jump than focusing on the dac right now
Interesting - I definitely prefer a warmer sound and Iām relatively sensitive to sibilant treble: What about a Modius / Liquid Platinum amp?
That would be a pretty sweet combo imo, that would give you great punch with the eikons, a warmer smoother more spacious sound with the elegia, and also make the go pretty dang fun, just make sure you grab balanced cables for all of them
Actually @M0N, what do you think about just getting a Modius with a THX 789? Pretty good upgrade for both at around $500, plus the THX also has a pre-out which I could use to keep the Dark Voiceā¦
I would highly recommend against the 789 imo, you would actually be taking a step down from the atom in some ways like timbre and spatial recreation, and also you mention you are sensitive to treble, the thx is over prominent and over sharpened which does not sound like a fun time for someone that doesnāt like a lot of treble
Ah, got it. Alright, well Iāll keep looking around - if I canāt settle on something Iāll just keep rolling over the monthly savings and probably end up getting a BF2 anyway, lol.
Regarding the preout situation, if you went with the modius you could just plug in the rca into the modius into the dv and the balanced to the plat and have your pre out
i think the modius would be a good upgrade for now, it wouldnāt make sense to jump to the BF2 without a amp upgrade as well imo
Makes sense, totally forgot about there being both balanced + SE outputs - Iām still used to the smaller SDAC.
Modius is good but for the details and performance I love bifrost 2. I can firmly say for for most people the BF2 is endgame and I donāt blame them. Enough people have called it a āmore musical baby Yggyā. So if you want a $700 Yggydrasil with a few compromisesā¦ Thatās for you.
I actually really like this combo, however better and higher resolving DACs sound harsh and cold on the treble on THX amps. The Modius while good will mean future dac and amp purchases will be made. If you are serious about getting that pair, keep your current amp with the bifrost 2. Same basic price range.
Can I use a USB-c to USB mini to connect my Android phone to the Modius, can I benefit from Schiitās Unison?
Thanks!
