No offense, you should be consulting with your motherboard manufacturer more than Schiit, they sent you 2 units and there stuff is known to work and you donāt have a problem with the laptop. I know customer service people canāt say not their problemā¦ but itās totally a hardware/driver problem. I would also suggest shutting off USB as boot option.
Well, thereās definitely some truth to that, but my Modi 2 worked fine when I had it, and all the Fiio and Topping products Iāve tried have had no issue. So, itās not just the PC and not just the Modius, but them together. Either way, Iāll wait to hear more from Schiit, and if needed Iāll open a new thread, so people can get on with other topics here.
I do appreciate all the suggestions people have given.
If you donāt have the problem with the laptop, it is not an issue with the Modius in any way. Itās just some setting with your PC, whether it be BIOS or not. My bet would be the USB boot, or some other setting within the BIOS.
I have a similar opinion which pisses me offā¦ it makes gear I wanted to sell off forced to stay for easier listening some place. Howeverā¦ Life is going to get strange with I finally pull the trigger on the Spring 2 Level 2.
Considering the massive price difference is that the multibit bifrost 2? Saying it holds itās own is rather impressive. Would you still say the bifrost 2 is better by a large margin or no. I mean, if itās just as good I will definitely have to grab one.
This is perhaps the best example of diminishing returns there is. They are different, and the bifrost is nicer to listen to. The modius is the best DS dac Iāve ever heard. The bifrost is the only ladder/r2r/Multibit dac Iāve ever heard. Wether itās worth the $400 difference comes down to preference or features. The BF2 has some nice future proofing. While the modius is set up for firmware updates, but thatās about it as far as future proofing or features.
Itās actually a $500 difference which is definitely why I asked since price wise thatās just massive. I do love my Bifrost 2 but if this can compete or even if itās slightly worse I would find hard justification on $500 more ya know? I could put those extra funds towards my first Focal or ZMF headphone.
Though, I really wish Schiit would put out a budget balanced amp alongside this Modius. It would be really nice. Like a balanced variation to the asgard 3.
Math is hard lol. Yeah itās something where some may think it absolutely worth the difference, and others would think itās completely not.
I would say the differences are subtle. So if you donāt want to put out $500 for subtlety I donāt think anyone would fault you there.
One thing the modius does better imo is how it handles highs. Theyāre thicker and a bit recessed, I canāt get things to sound piercing at any reasonable volume. And thatās with a thx789! Itās like it was made for my ears. The bifrost does not do this, itās flat af by comparison and honestly, it should be. If something at that price point had a sound signature like the modius I think it would be much more niche. I also think if the modius were flatter it would probably canabalize BF2 sales.
I think the Bifrost 2 handles highās better for me. As fro other R2Rā¦ the Airist R-2R is a weird but enjoyable DAC. It does suffer from a noise floor problem (that the BF2) does not.
Hmm, thatās even more interesting considering my own preferences. I guess I will have to pick up this dac at some point to try out then. Who knows maybe I will prefer this in my setup more than the bifrost, I doubt it but worth a shot.
As someone who owns this amp I would definitely like to know about that combination.
I mean, I definitely hope so? This seems like a step in the right direction imo
I would say save up for a DAC that s a bit more ādifferentā. It is a good DAC but not worth rebuying a variation of the same design from a different company.
So, final update regarding my USB issue. Spent a couple of hours on the phone with HP today and found out my bios was corrupted. Ended up not being able to flash and update and now my PC is downā¦ Bummer.
Anywho, it seems that it almost surely was my PC causing the problem. So, no worries if youāre looking at a Mobius.
Hopefully I can get a new mobo and get everything going again soon.
For an update from me, I am no longer having the issue after the last round of windows update. Works great. The only minor issue I have is when using wasapi if I play something that is a different sample rate than the previous thing I played I get a false start sometimes. Basically it plays a second and then stops. I just have to push play again and it works fine, but I guess its a bit finicky when changing sample rates. I dont get any kind of pops though so I will take the slight annoyance of pushing play again over the pops other dacs have at times.
Soundwise the Modius is a winner, it sounds like a improved Modi. Keeps the open non fatiguing sort of sound and Gets rid of the bloom in the lower mids I found the Modi had. Also has vocals be a little more present and has a really smooth airy top end.
Directly compared to my Creative G6, the G6 has a more in your face kind of sound that is a little more aggressive/exciting but irritating at times. Modius sounds more open and like it extends better in the air region. I prefered the G6 to the Modi but the Modius is a clear winner for me over the G6.
I would have a hard time recommending any other D/S dac to be honest, unless one just wanted to go cheaper. if you are looking for a 200 dollar D/S dac and dont care about bluetooth /remote/virtual surround dsps I think Modius is the clear winner. Its an outstanding value.
