I’m waiting on the next gen Soekris products that are supposedly upcoming.
Holo looks good but not convinced the headphone amp is optimal. Ares II looks nice and then there are the Audio-GD products that are interesting if not somewhat puzzling. If they made something in between the R2R 11 and the R28 that would do it as well.
Currawong got some audio-GD products, Joshua Valour too, and Next Best Thing studio just did a video comparing Audio-GD to a 10 000$ DAC, saying he prefers the Audio-GD.
Measurements aren’t good, though.
I just believe Audio-GD are the “black sheep” of the audiophile world. Doing things their way, not caring about measurements. Even doing measurements wrong on their website. They might be also just doing some things by ear, the old-fashioned way. Everything is subjective. If you like it, buy it. A lot of audiophiles enjoy it.
I used to own an Audio Gd NFB-11 and I personally thought it was amongst the worst sounding amps I’ve ever heard or owned. There was an overwhelming glare from around 2KHz all the way up the treble. It was distracting and even changing the jumper settings didn’t alleviate this.
This was just my own personal experience, so others may have a different experience and I’m not trying to shit on Audio Gd or anything, just to be clear.
Some of the worst reviews of R2R DAC’s I have ever seen are for audio GD products.
This is a quote from SBAF from a listener I think has a good ear, this DAC is no longer made but it was their top of the line offering at the time - The Singularity 19
Like the singularity that forms the center of a black hole, it warps time and space and relentlessly sucks in everything around it. Just that, in this case, it’s not time and space being warped – it’s one’s sense of utter disbelief, and it is not matter being sucked in but instead any hint of musicality or enjoyment. In other words, the various inputs of this DAC form a virtual event-horizon from which no sample data escapes unmolested … from which no music emerges … only a poor facsimile of what once was.
Some people seem to like some of their products, but there is significant negative press around some of it.
The Soekris 1101 is the portable. 1321 is the desktop dac only (which I own), the 1421 and 1541 are all in one dac amp combos (1541 balanced signal chain).
I haven’t personally heard the 1421, but many say it is slightly more resolving than the 1321.
I personally chose the 1321 because I wanted to see if I liked the Soekris line before spending money on the 1421 or 1541.
Also, I heard from a few sources that Soekris will be releasing an updated/newer version of the 1541 and possibly 1421. So my advice for now would be either to wait it out for the new release, or purchase the 1321 to see if you like the sound. The Soekris DACs rarely go for sale on the used market, so they retain resale value and you would have no troubles selling it should you want to upgrade when the new releases make their way into the market.
Also, the amplifier portion of the 1541 and 1421 are “meh” from what I’ve heard from other trusted friends in the hobby.
