I guess that’s it
but why no cloth material on the face

This will change Phoenix’s sound signature, and I don’t think that’s what we wanted. Maybe there will be more ear-pad models, idk.

Holding out for more models. Still will buy those pads though when they’re available for purchase.

I’ve ordered them, will take a couple of weeks to arrive. They will probably change the sound a bit but that doesn’t bother me because it gives a couple of different sound options and the price was extremely cheap ($15).

These headphones remind me a lot of the Nighthawks but are a lot warmer sounding so it will be interesting when I get the new pads where I can do a direct comparison with the NHs with the stock leather pads on.

Phoenix aside, I keep hearing about this Nighthawk comparison. I feel like the Nighthawk is one of those headphones Hifi Guides loves but everyone else hates. Combine this with the fact that they’re discontinued and everyone here keeps encouraging others to buy a pair secondhand just to hear it, I’m really intrigued by the infatuation since I’ve never heard them.

I’ll be curious to hear about the new pads.

The Nighthawks are a fantastic headphone, its not hype IMHO. The Sivgas remind me of them.a lot but are more warmer. I don’t see them as rivals but compliment each other nicely, I’m really glad I have them both. BTW I purchased a nice aftermarket balanced cable for the Nighthawks although they aren’t that difficult to drive but bring out more depth in the sound. The Sivgas don’t need balanced, they are so easy to drive and listening them with stock cable. Its a really nice cable but just a tad bit too long for my liking but happy to live with that because I am absolutely loving the sound on them

Second that but I wouldn’t get my hopes up. The new pads are only a few millimeters deeper and unless they upgraded the foam material, it wouldn’t be any more comfortable. Currently the foam on my pads disintegrate to the touch. idk if the weird shape is to blame, the density, the stiffness, but the foam is absolute shit compared to the Pali pads (Sundaras) which have similar dimensions to the original Phoenix pads. And it’s not that the Sundara pads are a paragon of comfort but they’re still way better than the Phoenix.

I’m holding out for my army of BW round pads to arrive to see which is the winner.

Yeah i heard this from the DMS review that they sound like the Nighthawks. I have the Nighthawks and their a good deal more darker. not as bassy. DMS said 50% of tracks he played on them he doesn’t like how they sound. Much to Zeos chagrin lol. He loves them like crazy. says their the headphones of the year. They are a touch dark though. thats Zeos jam it seems. he seems to like bassy dark headphones with a lot of soundstage. though i dont think these have a lot of soundstage do they?

yeah those replacement pads are different from the stock. i ordered them to see how they change the sound

In my experience with this headphone, I agree 100% with what this reviewer says.

He argues somewhere between Zeos and DMS

Oh man, this video seems to give a even more negative review to the Phoenix than DMS. And again he says the mid bass is muddy. is that true?

I’ve already stated it so, beating a dead horse here, I like my Phoenix but, a friend has offered to let me borrow an HE400I. I am looking forward to hearing something outside of my limited collection of X2HR, Sivga 004, and the Phoenix - perhaps I will learn something. For now, the Phoenix is the set that is plugged into my amp.

I think what’s really important here is to understand what the reviewers are using as their source including the quality of the audio files.

I use my Fiio M11 listening to Flac lossless, including Hi Res 24 bit files. I also have some 32 bit .wv files and I can assure you there is nothing muddy about mid bass. Even pairing it with the Fiio B5TR and listening via Bluetooth LDAC the audio is very clean and transparent.

Out of all the reviews I have seen or read Zeos is the one which I believe to be most accurate based on what I have experienced with these headphones. In fact I would say that most of Zeos reviews feel like that to me with equipment I have that he has reviewed.

So I stand by my (and Zeos’) judgement that this is an excellent headphone which may be source dependent (which is similar to my experience with the Nighthawks), e.g. “shit in” equals “shit out”!

I honestly don’t hear any muddyness in the mid bass at all. I’m plugged into the thx 789

Oh another “should we take reviews as gospel” talk. Yawn.

Anyway Phoenix pads are on amazon. Hot off the presses:

What are people’s major issues with the pads? I thought the current ones were too small, which these don’t look to address.

Too small, fit is God awful for my ears and the stock pads are just thin garbage in my opinion.

What @Gravitas said, but also the headband is too short for my head (they don’t go past my earlobe) and the foam inside the pads is so weak that I think the dust bunnies beneath my bed would make a better stuffing.

Has anyone else done the swap yet with the Sivga pads, just curious. I don’t want to change them up now because I will be auditioning another set of headphones and want to be able to compare the out of box sound of the Phoenix to them.

The new pads have arrived. They did need a bit more force than the original adapter plate to get on. And yes, they are considerably more comfortable and seal much better.
