Yep. Excellent combo for the price. Side note: are the Aeolus difficult to drive? Your volume is cranked.
Heās also on low gain as well. Or he could be controlling the volume though the su8 or pc
Nice! Iām surprised to hear its more revealing than jotunheim and a multibit. is that because of the multi-bit DAC and itās tube like sound?
I personally think itās because the sp200 is a better amp imo (not a fan of older schiit products), and the su8 is a bit more transparent dac, where the multibit is a bit more relaxed
Congrats on the 888. Iām loving mine
Iām using the SU-8 to control the volume. The one knock on the 888 is the lack of range on the volume. It pretty much hits max volume at about 1 on mine.
On low gain? Or high gain?
You could set the volume on the su-8 lower to get more range
It hits max volume at the same place on either gain, though obviously itās louder on high gain.
I do find that if I put the volume too low on the SU-8 that I donāt hav much headroom, at least with the Aeolus. Usually the volume around 30 on the SU-8 is good for most stuff when the 888 is on low gain and max volume.
Yeah, the potentiometer is a bit poor, imoā¦ The one in the 887 is a lot better.
Wow, you must listen loud! I keep my SU-8 on 26-27 and I canāt go past 9:00-10:00.
Of course I donāt have any really hard to drive headphones.
Sameā¦ I am often sitting around 9-10 o clock on low gain. lol But that is with the Clear which are pretty low impedance.
Yeah, the Aeolus like some power, lol
Not as much as the Argons though!
I actually hooked up the 888 to the pre outs on the Jotty to feed the 888 the Jottyās multibit DAC signal to test and the noise floor on the Schiit MB DAC is just bad. Like, the difference in sound between the SU-8 and the Schiit Jotty MB DAC is shocking. I tried swapping the XLR and RCA outputs of each DAC and the results were the same. The highs were much cleaner on the SU-8 and difference in noise floor was immediately apparent.
I need to dig out my Modi Multibit to see if itās any better than the MB in the Jotty.
I didnāt DAC swap the Jotty to compare, but it is definitely V-shaped in its sound. Not in a bad way mind you, but it gives up much in the mids compared to the 888 because of that.
Pretty much this exactly, plus the terrible noise floor on the Schiit Multibit DAC.
Yeah, the new asgard 3 and heresy are pretty sweet, but the older schiit is not something I am a big fan of
Iām starting to wonder if the volume on the SP 200 is defective. everybody seems to report different settings for what they consider loud. I know that with most headphones I have to turn mine way up usually past 2 on low gain. And I go pretty high on High Gain also. But some people are reporting they donāt go up to 12 on low gain.
Seems like I have to turn mine up a bit as well.
Interesting. On low gain, even with my 300 ohm 6XX and the hard-to-drive Dekoni Blue, my ears start begging for mercy around 11 to 12. I usually max out Windows and DAC volumes.
yeah i max out my volume on my system and dac also. but to no avail. im a little disapointed. i was hoping i wouldnt have any volume issues with this amp. but im getting pretty close to max for my latest headphone the Anada.
People listen at radically different volume levels and recordings contribute to perceived volume.
If you have to turn it up to much on low gain, use high gain, thatās what itās there for.
