Smsl SP200 THX AAA 888

I have an accuphase amp that I enjoy, but my main gripe is that they swapped the analog meters for led meters, a bit unfortunate lol

I don’t get that either, the analog meters are so enjoyable to watch lol

The g103-s should be a good price there, and be pretty dang nice, should be under 250 euro from thomann. Really nice amp, very clean and accurate with plenty of power on tap

G103-s, thanks! I will look into it!

I managed to get my Asgard 3 directly from Schiit for £268, took about 3 days or so to arrive and worked out at a couple pounds more than directly from the european dealer shipped to Scotland. So it worked out about the same as a 888 from amazon and so far I think it was worth every penny.

@UMirinBrah, In case you are interested in a sp200 I bought one in Christmas but after getting a Monoprice LP and an RNHP I will sell the sp200, I’m in Spain.

Do you find that the LP and the RNHP compliment each other?

Yeah. The LP is basically Balanced only and the RNHP single ended. I need both and the RNHP is quite nice… Also I got them both for a good price.

Thank you for the offer! I decided to go ahead with the Schiit Asgard though.

Just Grabbed a Asgard 3 from ebay for 245 Euros- they exist. Have a Grace Balanced SDAC currently runing to SMSL SP200 stoked to compare the two.

Curious to hear your thoughts :+1:

Alright so 1 hr solid listening time with the Asgard 3

  • All done with the Helios and running through the Grace SDAC Balanced.

The Asgard is much more subtle…I get what people mean by ā€œwarmerā€. This is the amp to chill with. I have run through some Hozier, Classic Jazz, Deadmau5, Jay-Z, Mix Rock.
With the Hozier and Jazz especially I felt myself calm down and relax with the Asgard sound where with the SP200 it felt more analytic - sharper somehow. Jay-Z felt more rounded, fluid. Rage Againsdt the Machine -Killing in the Name Of and higher tempo upbeats precise sounds, I really like the SP200, that being said I can probably take more deadmau5 with Asgard before overload and it becomes too much.

I’ll keep updating as I have different cans and a broader varietal of music but I like having the ability to toggle between the two so far…really get to amplify (see what I did there) the feels I want and adjust the sound.

For the Canucks on here, I am about to put my SP200 on CAM. Message me if you are are interested.
I also put two other amps on CAM this morning.

I have this exact same issue. :disappointed_relieved: Seems like a problem with the RCA connection on these amps then. I tried switching outlets but had no effect. I don’t have any other options since the SMSL only has RCA and balanced inputs, and I only have my PC motherboard connections which are either USB or the single 35mm stereo RCA out.

Crap.

Might be a temporary fix?

(Edit: I removed the link to a shitty cable).

Warning, Amazon reviews say these cables are really, really noisy. Don’t know why. Definitely not a good thing for headphones, heh.

Try another brand, or other adapters. Just RCA to XLR adapters maybe:

Yeah I saw that earlier, it seems to be from very old reviews in 2015 or so. I went with a different model of Hosa cables:

Nice. This one looks ā€œbeefierā€ too. Good luck :+1:

I’ve had the SP200 now for 4 or 5 months now and it is the best amp I’ve had for sure. I’ve used it with a few Dacs I have and they all sound good but I’m going back the my Modi Multibit with my Ananda and that setup sounds great. I actually had the Mimby put away because I was liking the EL Dac and D50s more but with the Ananda in the mix the Mimby sounds like I always hoped it would, I guess it pairs well with the Ananda, and the Sundara for that matter.

The Hosa balanced cables I got seemed to do the trick in removing the really loud noise, either that or it was the SMSL SU-8 DAC connected via USB.

I also received new heaphones, the DT 177X Go. They sound very similar to the DT 1990 Pro but also lack sub-bass, which is very odd since the reviews all talk about how bassy they are.

So now I’m wondering if I have a defective amp? Unfortunately I can’t use my Schiit Magni 3 to compare since I’m waiting on RCA cables to connect it to the new DAC.

Anything with bass impact around 120 Hz is loud, but the low end just isn’t there. With my Sennheiser HD8 DJ headphones I had a lot of low end and the drivers moved with a lot more force which actually vibrated through my head. It was like listening to an actual subwoofer.

The other problem I have that might be the amp, is there is a strange blurry distortion with sub-bass at loud volumes. On either DT 1990 or 177X the effect is the same, the volume of the sub-bass never really changes with volume, but the sound of the driver complaining increases, with a rattling or whiffing sound. When this happens with bass notes that linger instead of punchy bass, it distorts the rest of the music at a similar frequency.

It’s like, talking in front of a fan that moves a lot of air. Your voice gets blurry and echoes according to the frequency of the fan blade spinning and the amount of air it’s moving.

So it’s like the amp loses dampening or something with bass (I’d say anything around 75 Hz or less), so the drivers don’t produce a controlled sound, they just move a lot creating a rattling sound of the driver moving. Sort of like if you were to blow really hard between your fingers, without controlling the sound you just make a blowing sound instead of creating a loud whistle.
