So, what next? Looking for new headphone DAC/AMP advice

So the 1770s are alright, but I think beyer dropped the ball with the tuning, they sound overly bassy and kinda unrefined. That being said massdrop came out with the dt177x go which fixed most of the issues with them imo. Also the beyer t5p is pretty nice too

I see. Not sure I can massdrop here in the UK (curses)

Yeah that is the common issue lol. How much can you get a t5p for over there new or used?

Yep we can in the UK, just long shipping and higher prices. There are some EU stuff that already pays for duty like the 6xx or 58x

What about this pretty boy? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07ZNDN5PF/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=APO9EOC88M8D8&psc=1
Seems to not be too pricey for a nice amp.

T5P is £570

That isn’t bad tbh, that’s a pretty high preforming headphone

Oohh. Nice! I’d be willing to try that later on once I’ve saved up some coins.

i’d recommend the sennhieser hd600 or drop 6xx, dt1990 M570, Sundara next. If you must go closed the Fostex mehogany/ebony though you’ll have to get them used, maybe ebay. theres also drop 177x

OK so been using this Topping + Atom + Beyer 770 250 setup for a little while now, and I love it. So, what is next… I’m currently transporting the Topping + Atom to work and back as I work from home two days a week. I think the Atom’s plastic casing is going to take a beating in my bag (already some minor scratches because I packed my bag a bit tooooo much today).

So, I figure, I could leave this setup as my work one, which gives me room to play with something else at home.

EDIT: Ordered a K5 Pro…

I actually LOVE my 1770s.

Straight out of the box the bass bleeds into the midrange thoug and its just to much bass in general, IMO.

So i looked for mods, and what i did was remove the “foam” covering the driver and then put some black tack to cover the holes on the cups about 40%. Such a hughe improvement. They are now my favorite headphones (even more so then the 1990s which a lot of people really enjoy).

Now, the 177x might do what i modded my 1770s to do, when reading about their sound signature it seems like it.

I can highly recomend the 1770s especially since you really enjoy the DT 770 250 ohm which i also did. They where my first non-gaming headphones hooked up to a E10k - and after that… well… Im deep into the rabbit hole.

Love this thread, reminds me of my own journey!

EDIT: Where can you enjoy musich the most? at home or at work? I’d say maybe bring the K5 pro to work and leave the topping and atom at home. If home is the place where you can enjoy music the most.

Honestly, I am glad there are some genuine positive feelings for the DT1770. I’ve read a few reviews and people seem to like them - so they can’t be all bad. The big problem with this hobby is that you have to listen to things because it’s all down to the listener.

Yes the K5 Pro will stay at work, Topping/Atom will go home and stay there. Save me carting things about all the time. Also means I can swap the amp or DAC out whenever I want to try something more exquisite.

I will get the 1770’s next and give them a go. If I don’t like them, then there’s always the return button

yep! And the mod is reversable.

Nope, won’t be cutting anything to begin with. Will put some money away and get them over the next few months - will use the DT770’s for now.

Even now I keep hearing new details in songs I never heard before. Amazing!
