Some Audiophile Simplicity

Same in US. That’s a lot of blood plasma to sell… :pensive:

Time to calm down with audio purchases for a bit. I’m running out of room lol. My desks have become cramped and my closets full. Half of my guest bedroom closet is literally blocked by my Tekton boxes. And I can’t even use my fireplace lol.

so much audio goodness! it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on each use case you have setup: gaming, headphone listening, speaker listening, etc… Why did you choose the components you did for each use case you have? (kinda off topic from the audiophile simplicity thread, but really curious looking at each of your “zones”)

I hear your words but don’t believe them. There’s so much empty space in each picture. If you need help, I can highlight all spots that don’t have audio gear or boxes.

Yeah I’ll type something up a little later. I also have a speaker setup at my workbench and in my bedroom for blasting some metal at 3:20 am while I get ready for work.

Congrats, man. That is just incredible gear. I agree with @elementze I’ll be anxious to read your write up.

I’ve been enjoying some simplicity for a little while after I cleared a bunch of things out. I tend to go wide with purchases then sell most off and go up. Sitting with the Chord Mojo and the LSA HP-2 right now and it is a pretty great combo if you want simplicity. I don’t think I’m going to stay here though. Probably time to go wide again. I might even end up buying back another RNHP at some point funny enough @elementze. Round and round we go!

 this is the essence of the headphone hobby / addiction!

Lately I’ve been thinking more about simple solutions that are ideal for my various use cases / listening locations. Especially coming out of covid lockdown, I personally value the large desktop rack less than I did before when I was locked in my house all day. Rather than focusing my dollars into one listening context, I’m selling things off to be more flexible in all the places I want good sound.

So here’s a thing related to simplicity. I really like the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus. I like them a lot more than I thought I would. And wow they are convenient. I think they are going to see a lot more use than I originally intended. Like I put them in and it almost feels like cheating. Like how can I get away with enjoying them this much without even being connected to a nice piece of source gear? Not connected to anything at all! It doesn’t make sense. They are no Sarda or Andromeda, but they are pretty darn good, they are comfortable, and they cost me less than $100. Can’t complain.

That’s exactly how I felt about my 18 dollar earbuds. Don’t know if u recall but there was a time where I went full shill on 18 dollar Sony buds. Still love em to death. There’s something to be said about the scale of simplicity. I would say that’s also where I’m at with my gear atm that makes me so fulfilled. If I want to listen to good stuff I just listen to the Andros hooked up to my Dap. And bam. Done. Same with speakers, connected to preamp and dac, sit and enjoy. No fizzlinf with stuff etc

I think that’s what draws me to Edifier’s active speakers. All the connectivity you could want. I just run optical from my TV and I am set.

I am cleaning out my closet today. I pulled the boxes for three sets as they are hitting CAM/Kijiji today. More has to go. My box collection is nothing but headphones, headphone amps, headphone DAC’s and DAP’s.

Bedroom

Use Case: Listen to music while getting ready for work in the morning. Looking for neutral sound so I don’t disturb my neighbors in the morning with bass. I originally had a pair of JBL 104-BT, but they died. I decided to look for a cheap pair of passive speakers. I saw cheapaudioman review the Cambridge Audio Minx XL and deciced to try them out. Picked up a Parasound Zamp v.3 on Facebook for $100. The speakers are really great for $169.

Workbench

Use Case: Listen to music and watch videos while working on projects/misc stuff. Looking for my typical sound preference which is fun, dynamic, warm, bassy. I bought a pair of Vanatoo Transparent Zero on Ebay. Wanted to pair a sub with them so I went with a JBL Sub 550P. This combo meshes very well. The speakers use a high and low pass filter when using a sub. Easy and seemless integration. The sub is very clean and has no bloat.

Desktop PC

Use Case: Gaming and listen to music.

Speakers: Wanted very small speakers so I could put them under my monitor. Kanto YU2 fit perfectly. Paired them with a slim Monoprice sub that I could put in the corner. Sounds fine given size restraints. Thinking about purchasing a Mackie 2.1 system in the near future for more convienent volume control. the Mackie CR8S-XBT sub comes with a really cool volume knob that allows you to control overall volume as well as sub volume on its own.

Headphones: Schiit Bifrost 2 > Flux FA-12 > ZMF Eikon. Wanted to sample some higher end cans so I ordered some ZMF Eikon’s. Around that time the Schiit Bifrost 2 was starting to gain its initial momentum so I picked one up. Before the Flux FA-12 I bought a Violectric V280 on Drop, but I had a grounding issue with it so I returned it. Came across the Flux FA-12 somewhere online. Pretty great combo overall. A fun/musical neutral. Great separation and resolution. Ordered a Bottlehead Crack + Speedball kit during one of their yearly sales. Built by @A_Jedi on here. Lets me sample some tubey goodness.

Laptop

Use Case: Listen to music and watch videos. Looking for my typical sound preference. iFi Zen DAC > Cavalli Liquid Carbon X > LSA HP-2 Ultra. Before the LSA HP-2 I had some AudioQuest NightHawk Carbon’s and some Klipsch HP-3’s. All 3 are fun, but the LSA HP-2’s are definitely keepers. Great review here. The bass boost on the iFi Zen DAC is so good. All gear used on my laptop has been bought/sold here on HiFi Guides. Great community here.

Living Room

Use Case: LOUD music. You can find my journey here. Endgame achieved.

Nice write up! It’s a lot, but each thing has its purpose, which to me is at the core of simplicity. It’s not just more for the sake of more.

Every use case doesn’t benefit from the same gear. And I like your insight into what use cases benefit from different sound signatures: neutral, warm, loud. I’ve not put enough thought into that yet…

That is exactly what I mean by a simple but high-quality setup, flexible, high-quality sound and space-saving.

Can also be used more powerfully in another form.
