I received this from HiVi regarding the Bluetooth on the D300s:
“Thanks for ordering our D300 speaker.
But unfortunately D300 is not supports LDAC but APTX will do, pls check if your phone supports APTX or not? If your phone not support APTX, pls select defaulted SBC.
And kindly note that our bluetooth version for D300 is 5.0.
Pls let me know if any other question, thanks.”
Knowing that, am I better off using an optical input from something like a iVi Zen Blue?
For anyone wondering - especially people from outside the US - because people will go insane when the review goes public for this:
Swans is a part of the Chinese HiVi company. Important for anyone outside the US because usually most of the HiFi stuff is US-only (**cough Micca RB42 cough * ), you can buy these on AliExpress (HiVi actually has their own official store on Alibaba) - HiVi confirmed that they have legitimate distributors on Ali
I’m guessing people are gonna start freaking out about Chinese knockoffs because those have Chinese lettering on there and say HiVi… Zeos’ pair is also a HiVi, I’m guessing they just removed all the Chinese markings for the US market so people would take them seriously (not confirmed, just my thoughts; people are willing to pay $$$$ for (shitty) equipment that’s usually at least in part made in China, just don’t let it be explicitly Chinese equipment)
These won’t be in stock on Amazon. They will elsewhere. Bought mine today, should be in the EU in a month. The ridiculous shipping prices are just if you wan’t them delivered with DHL or something. I don’t mind waiting
EDIT: because people asked me, I got them for $530 with shipping on Ali, and they’re even cheaper if you take the slowest shipping method, but supposedly in that case you could end up waiting for as long as 3 months
I’m wanting to get a pair of powered speakers for my PC. Z was gushing over these in the review, but said you’d be psychotic to put them on a desk. Though I wouldn’t actually put them on a desk (I have a TV for a monitor and speakers about 4-5 feet apart on their own stands with my desk back about a foot frm the display), they’d still be in a fairly small room listened to from at most 6 feet away.
I was thinking of getting the Triangle Elaras he reviewed before, and I’m still kinda leaning that way. They look waaay better than these Swans too IMO. Are these better enough (especially considering my use case) that I should consider picking these up instead, or should I stick to the Triangles I was originally planning on?
Elara’s with Z’s Adorama link are about $640 IIRC, so pretty close to these Swans and that’s about the highest I was planning to go for speakers in this setup. I guess I was just leaning that direction because they sounded like a good option when he reviewed a handful of powered speakers a little while back.
Another reason I was leaning that way is that what I really ended up wanting after watching a few reviews are some of the higher end series speakers Triangle makes. Not only do they get really great reviews but they look fantastic, and that’s important to me. So I thought getting these cheaper ones to see if their sound is something I end up liking enough to still want to get higher end ones for a proper non-desk setup in the future.
I’m open to the other options. I don’t really know a lot of the different models and how they compare, outside of what I can catch from reviews online. The only speakers I’ve really lived with have been the pair of Mackie CR4s I got just to have some sound coming out of my pc. I’ve been a lot more focused on the headphones side of things than speakers.
I just saw the triangles (the br02?) they look nice, i might get them tbh HAHA
edit: those arent powered but damn i love those
also why powered? You can get an amp for under 100 that does wonders.
honestly tho, the ones you want should be fine i guess, but if you really wanna search, 6 feet max? thats pretty close, i would still go for nearfield at that range
I just want this setup to be simplified. I definitely want to get some passive speakers and to be able to play around with different setups and components later, but I don’t really want another box in my desk setup aside from maybe adding a tube amp for my headphones at some point.
6 feet is pretty close, so yeah, I think these might be too big. My PC’s unfortunately stuck in a pretty small, awkwardly shaped room right now. That should change soon, but I think these Swans might still be a bit too much for the spaces I’d be looking at filling.
The BR02/03s were kinda where I started wanting to go with Triangle, but I talked myself out of going passive at that point. Then I saw the Comete EZ, and my god, that gloss white, those horns! I need it! They’re what I’m planning on using when I get that separate setup for a bigger room than this.
That’s why I wanted to try these Elaras, to see if the Triangle sound is something I enjoy before I drop $1400 on speakers later (+the amp). It sound’s like it would be from the reviews, but hearing them and hearing someone describe them surely aren’t the same. I guess I will stick with the Elara’s for now, even though it sounds like the Swans would be more impressive.
I want nicer speakers for my PC. They do produce sound, but that’s about it. There is nothing exceptional or noteworthy coming out of them. Whenever I watch movies or play games with a great soundtrack, and most of all listening to music, I find myself needing to use my headphones because these speakers are just… boring. Any of the depth, clarity, details, just any of the stuff that can make you get lost in music for hours, these speakers have none of it whatsoever. Maybe I’m being too harsh on them, or I’m just too used to them. They’ve served their purpose, and I got them for basically nothing, but I need something better here.
I don’t know if I’ll be in this exact space for a while, but I doubt I’ll be somewhere where I can have a separate setup from this for some time.
I remember watching that review, but don’t remember what was really said about them, I’ll give it another listen here.
I will say that the reason I bought these had basically nothing to do with anything audio quality, research or reviews. I had enough points from work to get some gift cards for Crutchfield and these were simply the closest to what I had available and I needed something to make sound from my PC. Retail was about $150 (I think?), I spent about $30 of my own money on these, and I would say they sound adequate for like $100-150 speakers. They got the job done for a while. I don’t have much for comparison, perhaps it’s just how I have them set up, but I am pretty happy with how they do sound for games like FPS. I can pick out positions nearly as well as I can while wearing headphones.
Edit: after rewatching the review, I think I can tell that my Mackie’s are going a bit in the direction of those, but the ones he reviews are way bigger and cost at least twice what these did. And it sounds like there’s a reason. Mine do seem more like speakers for work than pleasure though.
Has anyone experienced amplifier hum with these? I recently bought a pair of m200mkiii+ and there is a noticeable hum present with no source connected. I ruled out ground loop issues even though I’m fairly certain its related to the amplifier input stage. I tried a second pair of them that had the same problem. Seems like numerous people around the internet mention the issue too. Just curious if this is a hit/miss thing with Swans amplifier design or if its present in all their powered speakers. I decided its not a deal breaker because these speakers sound amazing otherwise, but Id like to get rid of it if possible. Anyone have input?
It’s more a state of normality than issue.
Most powered speakers have background or white noise (hiss/humm) that is more or less noticeable.
If it’s barely noticeable in range of 3 ft / 1m mark that usually is pretty good. More than that or easily noticeable is pretty bad.
Some good / expensive ones have the option to lower the input signal / noise level so the background noise is barely noticeable (4" or so) or fades away completely.
The very good don’t have noise (powered On and No signal), it’s then more a source or preamp noise that is picked up.
Thank you everyone for your help. I feel like i hear a hiss and a hum (two different frequencies). I expected the higher one or the hiss. The hum on the other hand seems like it could be avoided. My PSB Alpha PS-1 are dead silent. Other than those, I will admit I don’t have a lot of experience with powered speakers. It’s noticeable when the room is silent and during very quiet music passages. Oh well. Like I said I have accepted it. The speakers sound phenomenal otherwise.
