My observations, applied the tune up kit on one of my Purple Hearts and left the other pair stock. Only applied driver side only because general consensus is applying the ear cup foam nerf the bass. Plugged both into a THX 789 AAA and did A/B testing. Results may vary for other X00 models as the different wood cups produce different sound signatures.
Bass became less muddy and become more clear/refined
Instrument separation became more obvious with better detail
Vocals felt more forward/present and less recessed
Treble was a tad smoother and slightly less peaky
You can order just the driver side only if you want to save some cash. Mark will sell it to you for around $30 instead of the full $45 if you request driver side only.
Hello,
On this webisde i have find Damping.
The only thing is you mus messure what do yo need.
And then can go cheaper,or when you live in Europe the waiting time are not so long.
But i have never use but thinking about to try in use for my Denon Ah D2000.
I have buy a Modding Kit from Mark for my Denon the price was 45$ plus 16.50$ for shippment.Where do you see it cost 30$?
I know it is a Good thing.I have buy one for the Fostex last year and was a good investment.
Never regret it to buy it.I am sure for the Denon is the same thing.
Later i become Cups from E-mu in Rosewood, actually i have the plastic Cup on it.
They sound pretty much on par with the TH900. More detail, sound stage, bass, and theyāre oddly easier to drive than the stock X00 drivers. Read the 1.5 drivers are more efficient. I just ordered some ZMF sheep skin ORI pads and the Dekoni attenuation ring to see I can refine the sound even further. Will probably end up swapping different cups as well.
Male SMC connectors #2963. The positive is a little long when you buy them stock so you have to trim them down which isnāt a big deal. Unlike most of the common connectors you donāt have to dremel the wooden cups to make them fit.
I was thinking about doing that mod sometime because the cable of the one I bought is in a horrible shape, you guys know if itās something managable by a complete noob? Iāve found the guide, but it seems fairly complicated lol
Its super easy to do if youāre handy with a soldering iron. Because the SMC connectors are non intrusive after you trim the positive post down you donāt even have to cut into the wood cups and theyāll fit right in the hole where the factory wire runs through. The only issue you might run into is finding cables for the SMC connectors which isnāt very common. Iām sure you can find a custom cable maker that could make you a set. Mod is like 2.5/10 in terms of difficulty
Iāll probably need to order a training kit first before actually trying anything, but Iāll definitely get there, thanks for the info.
What made me think that itās difficult is that as someone whoās never done any of this before, I canāt tell which wire goes where based on just this one guide, and I have no idea what I should look out for during the process. I guess Iāll have to do some extra research.
The other wire that isnāt marked with anything is the Negative wire that you just need to solder onto the ground part of the SMC connector shown in the picture above.
If you have the TH models with the non-detachable cables its super easy because the wires are already correctly soldered onto the drivers. All you need to do is follow the wires down to where the base of the cup where the wire exits out of the cup and cut the wire from there. You simply solder the wires to the correct contact point. Then you simply pop in the connectors into the hole and secure the connector using the nut on the outside.
By all means ask away. How are you ever going to learn if you donāt ask the right questions lol. I ended up using copper speaker wires because the TH900 drivers didnāt have any wires attached to them when they were shipped out. Generally any type of audio wire should work but iām not a technical expert on what type of gauge of wire you should be using. To keep the mod simple I highly recommend reusing the wires that came with your headphone.
Is a interesting mod do you try ,i like it .
For sure a little bit more power with the 1.5 Tesladriver.A great plus.
But not sure the Mahagony Cups are good, because they can go to bright myabe. When i compare it with my Fostex Tr x00 Mahagony.
Is brighter as the Denon Ah D2000 and D7200.
I hope you like it,maybe a good thing when you like specific Musik.
Actually I will try to change the plastic Cups on my Denon Ah D2000 to the E-mu cups in Rosewood with the Damping kit from Lawton.
All are in transit now,but they can go a few days before i can say anything about.
I hope you are satisfait with your mod.The attechment from the connectors are good too.It was a good idea, better as the stupid connectors.
I donāt know why Fostex do that.Better is a 2.5 or 2.5 connectors and the cabel is easier to made self i find.
What for Cabel do you use for the Headphone?
I have made good improvment with the Via blue epc 2 cabel.
Is a good silver cabel after the first 100 hours it makes a good job.
The idea for this setup is to resemble the sound signature of the TH900 without paying for the price of a used or new TH900 that I could use on the daily without worrying about it being damaged. Average cost of a X00 is anywhere between $350-$450 and the TH900 drivers are $250 for a pair. In total it comes out a lot less than what you would pay for a used set of TH900s which go for anywhere between $800-$900 used or $1600 new. Its the whole reason why I went with the Mahogany cups for now. I still have a set of EMU Ebony Cups thatāll be coming in soon for me to experiment with. Iām also not very treble sensitive. The cable is a custom pure copper braided SMC connector that terminates into a 1/4 jack. Similar to the copper cable that comes with the TH900.
