I was successfully able to mold the fostex ear cup using silicon. Now i’m waiting on the mica dyes and resin to come in so I can start molding the cups. Sorry for the shitty picture its kind of hard to take a clean picture of clear silicon.
That’s awesome. I’m looking forward to see how they turn out.
If they turn our well and sound good I will gladly pay you for a set.
Hello,
that was my impression too when i was finishd with my Denon D2000 Mod.(E-MunRosewood cups and Lawton Mod )
The first thing I thought when I put out the headphones was what the fuck what is going on here when the music is playing😆
Then the grin on the face.
When the euphoria subsided, I started to analyze unconsciously and I couldn’t find anything, that’s the incredible thing.
The bass is perfect, the subtle sub bass in the rosewood rrrrrr, the mids with relish, and the treble in female voices a pleasure.
When I tested the Tr x00 mahogany against, there were world differences: for me it is much too bright and sharp, but the bass does not work as with the rosewood from E-mu.
And I too, like you, came to the conclusion that there is nothing to bother you.
I am completely satisfied with the cups and the Lawton mod.
Even after days to put it on a treat.
I’m now thinking about what I’m going to do with the Tr x Mahogany. In fact, the mahogany cups are coming out. I’m still thinking about what to take, the Ebony from E-mu, zebra wood or even the paulo santo.
Or if it really works out of money, nice Lawton Cups, if so I would maybe have them matched to rock.
I am really completely satisfied and is exactly what I wanted.
Mold came out fine but the company I ordered the resin from sent me some soft craft resin instead of the hard resin would find on a resin table top. The color looks weird because I didn’t want to use the more expensive mica powder so I used some left over pearl and gold. I’ll update again when the proper resin comes in.
The pearl and gold made it look great though
Has a pretty good wood color to it and even a bit of a wood looking texture. Can’t wait to see the final product.
I’ll post up when I have further updates. I found an issue with the mold where its not holding a perfect seal when pouring in the resin which is causing issues filling the entire mold. I’m working with a fast prototype company to see if they can CNC a mold out of aluminum.
Hi,
I have a little doubt that aluminum would be a good thing, probably very good in terms of insulation.
But there may be problems with resonance, which may be too rigid.
There was a prototype from Fostex with black cups that were supposedly made of magnesium, and if you had achieved good results that would have prevailed.
It may make sense if the surface is polished smooth, and possibly with a little foam as Lawton offers in his insulation kit to achieve a good result. Wish you good luck.
This is what I have found as well. I don’t undertsnad all the discussion about the attenuation rings and the huge benefit they bring. On my Lawtons, they do nothing I can perceive, good or bad. Haven’t tried on my stock Ebony.
+1 My main issue with the stock pads were comfort. They sat on top of my ears. The AHG replacement pad is a MUCH better pad and I have a much better fit vs stock. Either AHG pad is a must for any TR-X00 owner and after months comparing both pads, I have to give the upper hand to this pad…
OMG! Are you going to sell cups then? I highly suggest you check out what Rosson Audio is doing. People will pay money to get the colors they want for these cups!
He’s talking about the mold. Not the actual cup. A mold out of aluminum would be ideal.
Actually, I ordered them almost immediately after writing that, and they arrived yesterday, so those other pads are completely off the table for now. I have to say, the comfort is in a different league even though the ones I got have a slightly smaller hole.
On the other hand, they provide just a tiny bit different characteristic to the sound which reminds me of a not too well calibrated EQ, and I can’t say yet which one I like better. To me, it sounds somewhat unnatural, but it might just take some getting used to, so I’m putting off my decision until the lawton tune-up kit arrives, and give them some extra time.
I can’t pinpoint what it exactly changes, but the bass is a bit stronger and female vocals sound a little different too (that might not be everything).
I think it’s because most of the people in the discussion aren’t using Lawton cups. They really are well designed speaker enclosures that produce substantial bass.
When I used the rings with the Lawton cups they were way too boomy.
Yeah I can’t speak on the Lawton cups but with stock ebony, attenuation rings and ori pads they sound good. Now I haven’t tried them without the rings tho.
That was my experience with the un-modded TH610.
For stock cups, all the rings seems to do as far as I can tell is bring the bass and maybe sub bass up a bit, but the reduction in bass is usually the biggest complaint from most pad swaps (that or the treble) so this is a good thing for the Ori/AHG-ZMF pads to get a more stock-like sound. Those stock-like pads from AHG have rings built in. That and the shape are why they sound so close to stock.
If you want to hear the effect of the rings, only put a ring in one side and listen to a bassy track in mono. The bass will feel off center because it is louder on the side with the ring. Thicker rings seem to have a larger effect from my testing.
It’ll really depend on how they come out and what they sound like. I’m still figuring the entire process but keep you guys updated. Rosson Audio is the entire reason why I decided to give this project a go lol. Wooden cups are nice but I wanted something a little more unique looking.
Awesome! If you can end up with anything like the Rosson stuff, I’d be happy to send some money your way if you decide to make some and want to share.
