Has anyone possibly tried the Eikon pads? I read on Reddit they are more bassy then the Ori pads. Anyone know if this is true?
The Eikons are the next pads Iām trying.
I currently use Oriās as those have yielded the most neutral sound for me.
Previously tried Universe Suede (reduced the highs and muddied the bass), and Auteur Hybrid (bass was relatively neutral, but the upper mids were too elevated).
All of these were without attenuation rings. The rings add way too much bass for me.
ZMF has a handy chart that explains likely changes in sound and pad characters:
https://www.zmfheadphones.com/zmfpads
For reference, Iām running a full Lawton mod of a Fostex TH610.
Hereās a link to my build:
The accessory house global pads are the same size and thickness as the Ori pads but the ear hole is a few mm shorter and a few mm wider. If I remembar correctly this is the same as the eikons.
I just got them recently and if you are looking for a bit more bass they should suffice, but I would recommend using attenuation rings first before you buy new pads (or thicker rings if you are already using them).
Eikons are slightly larger (outside diameter).
But the ear hole is the only thing that effects sound. Although I will admit that the AHG pads are a bit thicker than the eikons, but they are also about $30 cheaper.
These work perfect for me, with the dekoni attenuation rings.
Pad depth, foam density, and the type of covering (Lambskin, Suede, etc.) factor into sound as well.
But itās nice to try different combinations to finds the sound you like best, imo.
Yeah, the AHG pads that copy the shape of the stock pads are as close to the shape of the originals as one could realistically expect them to be, but they still sound very different. Itās obvious that there are many other factors at play here. After using them for a few days I decided that itās too much of a trade-off for me, and Iām back to the stock pads again. I find that everything sounds dull with them, I donāt know how people usually refer to this kind of change in characteristics, but itās kinda like every sound/instrument/voice, you name it, has an added emphasis to their lower regions, it doesnāt simply result in stronger bass, but also makes everything else sound somewhat lower than they should, trebles and mid too, which I register as a sort of distortion.
Dekoniās pads are once again back on drop for a few days, and taking into account my experience with the above mentioned AHG pads, I picked up a pair made of protein-leather. At this point I canāt think of anything else other than the memory-foam itself or the lambskin that could account for the kind of change that the AHG pads had. This is the last thing Iām willing to try as Iām running out of options, and honestly, if the AHG pads couldnāt do it for me, Iām starting to doubt anything else can. The last thing I can think of is that the rings sold by Dekoni have a larger hole than the originals, so I might also give one last shot making my own in the future if protein-leather sounds any more similar to stock compared to the others Iāve tried so far.
On another note, shipping to the EU is horrendous right now. I didnāt have any problem with the costs up until now, but the slowest option that possibly takes months costs considerably more than priority used to. I canāt find any shipping option that costs less than two times the padsā price.
Thereās nothing wrong with the way the stock pads sound. Some prefer actual over ear and not partially on-ear pads for the sake of comfort. If the stock pad is comfortable for you, itās going to be the best option.
Youāre right on point, thatās exactly why Iām trying out different pads, the stock is just barely bearable for me. By now Iām not even after any sort of change in sound, Iāll leave that to the tune-up kit. I read that most people are in the same boat. Itās not that horrible, though.
Iām only writing these short reviews because I expected different results after reading this topic, these aftermarket pads are definitely not for everyone, and I just wanted to get the word out.
I really regret not getting the fostex tr-xoo purplehearts. Do the e-mu purplehearts sound remotely similar?
Imo def no, pretty dang different, the emu purpleheart is closer to the creative aurvana live, if you wanted something like the x00 ph, you would go for the emu teak, but itās going to be a more neutral than the ph but pretty close for what you are after
Isnāt rosewood another contender? Iāve never heard it personally, though. I just sort of got that image based on what I read.
I havenāt heard the rosewood either, so I canāt comment on that one but it seems as if it would be
hello again mon do the emu teaks have the same bass to the fostex?
Yes, perhaps even a bit more controlled and refined with similar impact, they are pretty much using the same or similar driver and design, but itās not going to have as much quantity as the ph
I installed the rosewood cup on the Denon D2000.
And is really remarkably superior to Fostexās mahogany.
Plays much more refined, very good bass and sub bass, great mids and the highs really mega well without exaggerating.
Unfortunately I donāt have the Purpelheart to say that they are the same, but as well as many say besides the teak, the Emu Ebony and rosewood are behind teak. The Emu cups are recommended with the Lawton mod. As mentioned, the Rosewood my mahogany plays on Wall, I can hardly hear it anymore.
I cant find the teaks anywhere. Are they only sold on drop? Currently they only sell the purplehearts
You can order them directly from EMU using this link.
https://www.emu.com/order.html
You can also order the Purple Heart cups from them at the same time if you email them directly. The polished PH cups wonāt be in stock until two months from now but they currently have the matte finish PH cups in stock.
Matte finish was actually an option? I never knew
