One other thing I should say, get a higher end headphone before you upgrade your DAC/amp. Once you’re in that price bracket, synergy becomes more important. That’s when your going to want to ask the more knowledgeable people around hear what you should look at.
Does anyone know of someone who mods the THX00 ? I’m looking to do a detachable cable mod. I asked Lawton but he said his cable guy is on hiatus.
Hi,
If you just type < Detach > in the search (magnifying glass at top of page) and then select the check box “Search this topic” you will find several posts on the subject. Most of them DIY.
Also, I responded to you in the Lawton mod thread and linked you a specific post for DIY.
I hope that this is some help!
Oookay. Got the Teaks today and have been listening for a few hours now.
Negatives first.
Out of the box I was pretty underwhelmed. They were fine but obviously none of us are shooting for “fine” in our collections. I started pad swapping almost immediately and ended up back with the stocks, all the other pads were all very obvious downgrades. Pads with more interior space do these no favors imo. The stock pads are the tightest fit and have the least depth of all the pads I tried and that seems to agree with these the most. The pads I trialed were ZMF ori suedes, dekoni x00 hybrids, accessory house sheepskins, and for shits and giggles I threw the brainwavz XLs on there too but it was a very awkward fit. The ori was pretty good but the low end got sloppy. Again, I think that was down to how big they are, god damn they were comfy though…
My next issue is a pretty noteable one, I have a balanced cable that I was going to use with these, but it didn’t work. The connections are the correct size but the jacks on the headphones are slightly recessed or something, they don’t allow my cable to get a full connection. I paid extra for the removable cable so I’m annoyed about this to say the least. I’m sure there are cables that fit, but the fact that I have to hunt for one when I have a perfectly good one sitting right here does not please me.
The good news is that brain burn-in is as important as anything in this hobby, and as I have continued to listen I have steadily become more happy with their sound. Nothing is really wow-ing me but they’re doing a good job with most of my library. I bumped the low end up a bit and it’s pretty beefy now. I’ll keep listening an report back after a few days of both brain and physical burn-in, give them a real fair shot.
I guess I have heard enough headphones and iems at this point that in the mid-range I’m not going to experience anything that I’ve never heard before. I may or may not keep these. If I end up selling them I think I’ll probably dip out of the game until I set aside enough money to try something in the flagship tier.
Hello,
Can you show a photo with your cable problem?
Because of the padswap, did you use the Dekoni rings or not?
They have the biggest influence on the pad swap.
Without the rings most pads sound spongy, it only gets better when you use the Dekoni rings.
@A_COC0NUT has once made for fun himself from Ovaltine lid and has not achieved bad results.
I tried the pads with and without the rings, still prefer stocks. Might try again once I have settled with their sound more rather than rapid swapping right out of the box.
Their cable connectors have a raised base, mine is missing this feature.
Both are 2.5mm, though in this pic it does look like theirs is larger altogether lol.
Hello,
The Emu Teak requires 3.5 mm plugs, not 2.5 mm, which would be the wrong ones.
I just checked the product page again.
3.5mm Gold-plated Stereo Mini Plug with 6.3mm Stereo Adaptor
That’s why theirs don’t hold because the outer diameter of the plug is 1mm too small.
Give the Teak more break-in time after the first 100 hours it should not do anything more.
Then I would approach the padswap again in peace, but it is important that you then also know the originals.
The padswap was always about comfort, never about achieving a better sound. The goal was to get as close as possible to the stock pad with the best comfort, because there are differences in the padswap.
If you have no problems with the stock pads, then leave it.
Wow, I must have gotten the 2.5 from the drop version and just not bothered to check their site specs. Guess they updated. I’ll probably be fine with the stock pads, they’re a little warm but otherwise fine.
My Teaks are definitely using dual 2.5mm, I use my Hart cable from my Nighthawks for mine.
Definitely give them time to break in. These biocellulose drivers in particular change a noticable amount. They won’t become different headphones or anything like that, but any problems like messy bass will clear up.
With my stock purple heart cups I really liked the dekoni X00 sheepskin pads with attenuation rings. They sounded a bit warmer, wider, and had smoother treble than the stock pads. I also really liked the Ori lambskin and hybrid pads. They are a bit less warm but so comfortable and sound the best with the Lawton cups.
Something about these was harsh to me, I wasn’t sure what it was because frankly I don’t know a lot about frequencies beyond the low and high ends. After some experimentation I found the problem area, around 2k. EQd it down a fair bit and these became muuuuuch more enjoyable. My headphones have always been pretty V shaped. I guess I don’t play well with mids.
I have a balanced cable coming in a few days, at which point I’ll actually get to pair these with my liquid platinum.
Oh boy. If you’re sensitive to 2k to the point the Teaks bother you, you should stay away from Grado. From my experience and the graphs I’ve seen, the 1 tesla foster drivers are all at least slightly recessed around the 1k-5k region. What are you running them off of now if not your liquid plat?
Monoprice THX amp/dac combo unit.
Hopefully the liquid plat will fix that harshness for you.
It’s pretty much gone now with the EQ treatment, but yeah I’m hoping the LPs signature will be generally a little more relaxed.
Does anyone have pictures of the other E-MU Cups? Looking for pictures of Ebony, Rosewood, Purpleheart, Sapele, Mahogany and Zebra.
@Deleeh has the ebony and rosewood and he has posted pictures in this thread before.
Here are my fostex purple heart cups. Hopefully E-MU’s will look similar.
And you can look at Lawton’s website to see examples of mahogany (type 1), sepele (type 3), zebrawood (type 3).
I thought the TH-610 was walnut?
You are absolutely correct my friend - I had a senior moment - thank you for the spot check!
