The DEALS thread

Would you find that the Ebony are worth the extra $100 than the Mahogany or PH? I really enjoy bass, but I prefer it to be crisp than anything. That’s why I was so impressed by them in the sound demo.

Do all of the Fostex models have more bass quantity than Argons? I’ve been particularly curious about how much bass the purplehearts put out.

FYI, @CallMeCuatro, just saw this: https://www.audiogon.com/listings/lis9ba61-fostex-th-x00-eb-headphone-ebony-over-ear?refsource=hifishark. I’ve been keeping an eye on X00 sales but honestly can’t justify it right now.

Yes imo, I would go for it because they are getting pretty hard to find, I think it’s the most refined sounding

why not? save yourself 50$ and go with the dekoni, you get 2 sets

Hard to say, even though you have the two sets, you can use them with other cans. From everywhere I’ve read the Argons were meant to be with the ZMF Proteins, there’s just no experience like it.

Yeah the argons are the best with the proteins from my experience

This is awesome, thank you!

DMS recommended the sheep skin

Unfortunately I haven’t always been on the same page with DMS on his recommendations. He seems to like a lot of treble, something that I’m not opposed to, but don’t favor. Plus on the Argon page on the Modhouse website they detail what each set of pads do for the Argon sound, and Protein just seems to fit my preferences for “fun”.

Well you said yourself that DMS isn’t always right, his top 5 video wasn’t very good apparently.
I see the protein leather recommended most often myself.

Well apparently everything is objective and a matter of opinion. just giving options now.

a pretty substantial amount… I can feel the drivers move on some tracks and the sub bass definitely hits hard… never heard argons though

With the argons the bass is there, but it doesn’t really slap or slam like the PH does (I actually think the PH has more bass than the argons too). Also the argon’s can’t dig as deep as the PH which is surprising

If you had to choose one Fostex out of this category, including all those different woods, like the mahogany, ebony, purpleheart, etc.
Which would you choose personally?

With the wide range of music I listen to I would end up picking the ebony, but if I could have other cans the purplehearts for most fun. I have my th900mk2 with the lawton purpleheart cups and they are just awesome

So the ebony is the best all-rounder whereas the purpleheart is most fun with bass? Interesting.
How would the bass compare to the Triple Driver or Nighthawk Carbon?

I’ve also read a lot of people have issues with the Ebony, PH, and Mahogany all have small ear cups. Any recommendations for full over ears? I can’t stand on ear.

Ah yeah the pads on there can be kinda uncomfy, so a fair amount of people switch them

I think both the nighthawk and fostex have the better bass to my ears compared to the triple driver. Overall detail wise I think the fostex are more detailed, and I would also argue that the bass and midrange on the nighthawks are more detailed on the hawks but the 1more has better treble than the hawks (but I think that comes down to tuning and presentation imo). I think the fostex have the best imaging but the hawks have the best soundstage. Timbre wise I think the hawks might have an edge, followed by the fostex. I think the timbre on the triple driver can get a bit unnatural at times. Regarding speed and separation I think the 1more might have speedier treble but I do think the fostex is more detailed and has better separation

Also I just realized that you only asked about bass

You could either swap pads or look into the denon d7200 which has a similar sound with a different tuning and design that also comes stock with larger pads
