I want the DT 880 600 ohm myself!
Youd have to pick up an amp first though highly recommended headphones for sure
if that was up to me…I’ve got the Vali 2 going now.
just waiting for my BiL to drop off my ENOG2 Pro and then I’ll be on my way
That should run the 600 ohm no problem then
ooh, how is the vali?
also, I love my enog . Let me know how they pair up!
well, I need to get a 6.35mm male to 3.5mm female adapter to test most of my headphones, so right now only my Senn HD599se plug into it. I have I my Mac Mini going into it with system volume and Spotify volume set to max. with that, I can run my Senn’s at about the 7 or 8 o’clock with ample volume.
I noticed an immediate liquid warmth to my sound and am looking forward to trying my 4xx, HP-50’s and Blon B8’s on it as well.
Oh my bad… wasnt on your profile… tubage will be nice with the 880 if you decide to go that route
I’ve updated that.
i enjoyed the 880s on my little dot was a good pairing for sure
Well i know at this price point your not gonna get the perfect headphone. The headphones offered have their shortcomings. My problem with the dt880 is it lacks body. Its very treble centric. but that lack of body or bass and lower mids gets on my nerves during longer listening sessions. It does have nice treble and detail though. And sounds a little better on tubes.
But the 58x is such a nice headphone for the same price. has no problems with anything really except the veil/recessed highs. but its not too bad. I was really impressed and its imaging. bass/mids/highs, detail are all good. it seems to be a good all rounder at this price point a bargain. thats why i recommend it. i never recommend the dt880 or the 4xx for this price.
Thats why i love the Meze99’s It seems to have everything. and its closed backed which are hard to find that sound this good. They went on sale for 160$ and i feel that if meze kept them at this price they would be awesome competition for 58x/dt880/4xx. And their closed. a lot of people want closed. Yeah the bass is a little sloppy but its not bad.
Why did you decide on the Sennhieser HD599se over the 58x?
I liked the 99s when I first got them and listened to them a lot to get a feel for them. But going in between them and my other gear (including the 58x) I don’t think I’d choose the meze over them. Unless I really wanted closed but I still think I’d look elsewhere if I really want closed backs. It is amazing how much detail they manage to retain but it’s kinda bass murder compared to anything else I own. Suede pads or the shure alcantaras does make them much more manageable though. Plus maybe I have a big noggin but when I put pads that are any bigger on them they barely fit. In addition they don’t really scale at all with other gear really.
The 58x is really great and I do still want to try the meze… that said if a wide soundstage imaging and detail are things a person wants at this price range the 880 is easy to recommend especially if a tube amp is part of the equation… 58x cant offer all those things so imo they each have their place
I… never heard better highs than HD58Xs. Unbeatable for the price IMO (unless you only want treble, therefore go with Beyers maybe lol).
I actually would prefer my HD58Xs to have recessed highs. I mean, the little-but-wide dip going from 1khz to 10khz we see (and hear) in a ton of hi-fi headphones (…and the HD280 Pros I used for 10 years – maybe that’s my “problem”). Otherwise, HD58Xs, 10khz and above, just sound glorious to me.
Then what is the old Sennieser “Veil” about?
Ask Grado and Beyerdynamic fans maybe.
I know about the Sennheiser “veil” stories but never heard it. shrugs
I don’t think its as evident on the 58x imo on the 6** its much more apparent
Old or hard of hearing or, well, different ears, might complain about the lack of highs… So, “veiled” highs? But that’s just preference. And that’s ironic considering the first thing I heard about HD58Xs is its possible “harshness” or even “grainy” treble. You can’t have veiled and grainy detail, huh?
Different ears, different preferences, IMO. HD58Xs with old and/or squashed pads = Smoothness and “reverb”. But “veiled” ? No way. A “veil” for 150$ headphones for me would have to mean “lack of detail”. For this price category the HD58Xs are pretty much the opposite – “too good for the price”.
I heard it right away. One of the first hifi headphones i got was the HD600. and i could hear that “veil”. it bugged me and one of the reasons i sent it back. “Veil” referes to when you place a cloth or something over a speaker. dont know if that causes detail to drop but it does effect the treble. I think they have good treble but it is a little withdrawn. I refer to Bert. At timestamp 5:35 -
