AEON Flow both open and closed on sale at Moon Audio for 599$
because they cost me $100 CAD shipped…not $200+ CAD shipped
Havent heard the original Aeon but from what i gather the Aeon 2 is a much better headphone. I would save and look for a used Aeon 2. You can sometimes find them for $600-700 on the used market. I sold mine for $675, i think. Bought them open box for like $800 not long after they were released. They’re out there and can be found for decent deals.
I had to adjust the clamp and put my HD58Xs on something to squash the pads for like 12 hours so they get “veiled” enough for me to enjoy the treble without it being agressive or even “grainy” so well, to each their own.
Word. The 58x are the tightest headphone clamp in the world.
Not if you know how to properly bend them. I have a gigantic head (wear a 7 and 3/4 hat size) and after properly bending the steel arms, I have no issues.
fat head! fat heat!
Anybody that has played Goldeneye back in the day should be familiar with DK Mode, lmao. Without a haircut, that’s how I feel currently.
Clamp was not a problem for me considering I got used to HD280 Pros for 10 years, heh.

I think you can, although I wouldn’t accuse the Sennheisers of graininess as a fault. I do recall that the 6xx sounded grainy to me by comparison to Pandas, which surprised me because I’ve never though of those as grainy.
As I’ve ventured into higher-end headphones, one phenomenon that I’ve always found interesting is that it’s easier to find faults in certain headphones only when stepping down from better headphones. IOW, it’s very difficult to detect what’s missing or slightly off, especially when it’s already extremely good.
Back when I had only the 650s, reading about the “veil” bothered me (and intrigued me), because my Senns were so detailed and natural compared to everything else I’d heard. These days it’s jarring to go from Stellias to Sennheisers because of the veil.
That’s exactly how I hear it, too. The “veil” to me refers to how Senns have a bit of a “soft edge” to notes. Decays roll off to a blunt edge. I think it’s actually part of their charm and why so many types of music just sound good on them–they take the edges off.
Stellias & Utopias, meanwhile, will ring decays out seemingly forever, into an infinite blackness. When you step from that back to 6xx it sounds like some of the music is just missing. Hence the “veil.”
Graininess, meanwhile, has to do with purity of tone and imaging of fine details like violin strings. On the Focals certain notes can sound smooth like glass. Compared to that, even silk feels “grainy.” Is it? Well, technically, yeah, probably, because there’s not really a better word to describe that particular difference, but that doesn’t mean that relative graininess is objectively problematic.
I wonder sometimes how much the differences in how we describe audio experiences are really due to differences in how we perceive audio vs. simply finding the language to accurately relate what we perceive.
Fun fact, The sennheiser “Veil” was commonly used to describe the old HD580 and the earliest versions of the HD600 in the early and mid 90s. The drivers have undergone some revisions that have fixed the “veil” as early as 2004.
The only reason that stupid term still exists is because people that prefer bright headphones like to call anything neutral veiled. It’s utter bs. Tyll was able to prove this with measurements of different models, AND through A/B testing them blindly.
For context, I’m not the biggest Sennheiser fan in the world either.
I purchased HD580’s awhile back and always wondered about the infamous Senn “veil.” Never travelled down that path to find an answer since I didn’t want to skew my perception of the headphones.
Interesting how the graphs are similar by the way.
Stellia VS HD58X.

And yeah I know, measurements aren’t everything – at all. There’s different technologies in these headphones even.
Measurements can give you a good idea of the sound signature and it seems the Stellia has a little veil itself.
I prefer a veil to pickaxes hitting my eardrums.
Anyway, it’s not the VEILS thread, guys.
Every thread here will eventually take off in a different direction
Water is wet, the sky is blue and we can’t stick to topics!
I understand that completely. I think after listening to more and more different headphones, the HD580 can be much better appreciated.
I know that we currently have all of the amp possibilities in the world…back in the early 90s, maybe not so much…at least not to people new or casual in the hobby. When things arent powered properly, sound can become very strange from what it should sound like.
Back to something relevant, I found a pair of used Beyerdynamic DT 880 600 ohm from a local seller for $50. I’m thinking of pulling the trigger and doing a detachable cable mod. I’ve done the mod a bunch of times, but only once for myself, lol.
