Also, stupid question, but has anyone heard the Monolith Liquid Platinum Hybrid Amp with Sundaras? I’ve found little tidbits over the internet that it might work well, but no confimed cases. They’re on sale for $550 on the Monoprice website.
Secondary interest is how they’d pair with DT-990/770s.
Tertiary is how well they’d work running them with an Enog2.
That’s a really good pairing imo, that is really nice for what it does to the sound, smoother, better impact, better recreation of space, and imo just a higher tier of amp. With the 990 770 though, the single ended kinda sucks on it for the price, so it would be merely ok. As long as you have a balanced dac (which you do) and a balanced cable for the sundara it would be sweet for the sundara
Welp. I have now spent officially too much money on audio equipment. However, very much so looking forward to seeing some of the difference between hybrid vs solid state. Been looking for a good balanced upgrade and a first foray into tubes (that can also power planars). This fits both of the bills.
Any tube rolling recs for the sundaras? I’ve read a bunch of stuff about dynamics and tube rolling. However, I’m going into it knowing that people describe the effect of tubes on the sound of this thing as ‘40% tubes + 60% solid state’.
Also, I will have the cables. Was getting a dual 3.5mm to 4-pin XLR. Should come in a week or two. Until then I’ll be doing balanced DAC into Amp, but just 1/4" TRS for the headphone connection.
The LP and the Sundara’s are an Amazing combination. I ran that for like three days straight and am looking forward to getting back at it. $550.00 is amazing for this amp. It will drive pretty much anything and the bass will sound and feel authoritative.
Think more like 80 to 90% SS and 10 to 20% tubes and you’ll be less disappointed. Anyone who tells you that individual tubes change the sound in a big way are stretching the truth, to put it politely. A hybrid is an SS amp with a bit of tube in there. If you don’t love the amp with stock tubes, you never will.
Think of it as an SS amp that you can fine tune to tweak the sound.
To be clear, I LOVE my LP and it is my fourth hybrid.
That’s not quite true in most cases.
Usually they are Tube voltage stages followed by a SS current stage.
Since tubes are better at voltage amplification and transistors at amplifying current.
Again while it achieves that in most cases, it’s just an output section.
It replaces the transformer, which converts voltage to current.
Or a power tube that provides the output current in an OTL amp.
A Hybrid will only have lower output impedance if it’s designed that way.
A Hybrid is not equivalent to, though it is similar to a tube buffer feeding a SS amp.
Announcing the “Royally Ticked Off” OB Sigma Sale!
