šŸ”¶ Tin P1 - Planar IEM

So. Finally dove into the wide world of 3rd party/aftermarket cables finally. A BIT OF A MISADVENTURE. Found some extremely exhaustive review threads on Head-Fi and spent more time reading about measured impedances, connector qualities, etc. than any human adult should even consider in a lifetime. AT LONG LAST, I had identified my target: a 4-core oxygen-free copper ditty from Definitely Real Company JCALLY.

Then I waited ā€“ biding my time, initially just fixing up the house, then putting my girls through college, finally retiring and growing old with my wife; later, when the only things left on the horizon for me were the arrival of an AliExpress delivery and my own death, eventually joined the posthuman revolution and became a formless nanoswarm; loaded up to the cortex from my source box and traversed untold space and time off the moons of Jupiter, ultimately being born anew a child of stardust and light.

Cables finally show up. The air in the room is pregnant with anticipation. My wife is indifferent. My cats were asleep. I pull my new JCALLY brand Certified Bang For Your Buck cables from their spartan transport. And there they were - no lie - 100% absolutely exactly identical to the stock P1 cables that everyone hates.

It was a great moment to be post-alive. There is nothing more audiophile than searching to the ass end of the internet for a superior DOUBLE SECRET SLEEPER cable and ordering some obscure enthusiast offering from the literal other side of the planet, only for the universe to deliver you exactly the cable you are trying to replace.

So I finally broke down and bought hybrid copper-silver offerings from TRN and Yinyoo on the basis that they are supposed to be comfortable and because they look badass. What is their impedance? Will they add EXPANSIVE COLORATION? I donā€™t know. I donā€™t care. Iā€™ll find out if I like them when they get here after the sun has collapsed into itself and sucked all recognizable existence into a void of infinite density.

Thankfully Iā€™ll more than likely never feel the need to undo the port mod (partially because I canā€™t). Although I am looking forward to how the P1 sound off if something like the Asgard 3 when I get that in a few months.

Just want to contribute about my P1.

So Iā€™ve just kept them aside since Iā€™m heavily in love with my CA Andromeda. So while this quarantine thing is happening everywhere, Iā€™ve been listening to my other headphones and IEMs.

I know this will strike a lot of nerves but I did notice some audible improvement with burning them in for at least 10 hours. I donā€™t believe in burn-in but they changed. The low-end sounded more extended in my opinion.

Stay safe everyone!

Drivers are a mechanical thing and like all mechanical things, use will have an affect on how they function. Most of the time these changes are extremely subtle when it comes to headphones but other times itā€™s more obvious like with the P1 and the TR-X00. I guess you just have to experience it to believe it sometimes.

Absolutely. So now, Iā€™m enjoying the mids and bass of it. Not so much punch on the bass, but all the others are fast. Itā€™s such a guilty pleasure!

Still an amazing set for the price, nothing else comes close price wise with an iFi bass boost

I actually found the P1 to fit me the best out of all my IEMs, even the more traditional shaped ones.

Iā€™m just hoping they finally get their mmcx connectors right this time. So far they have all been a bit loose for me.

You are lucky then, I have to use foam or hybrid foams for it to work for me.

I thinks itā€™s just the fact that they are so small. The fit is almost entirely dependant on the tips since the body makes little to no contact with my ear. I found a tip that works perfectly for me so they fit great for me. Maybe try these tips if you want.

Yeah I already have good tips for them. Just that I had wished the body itself would have helped more with the fit, which is something I want them to improve with the p2.

Fitā€™s ok for me and hopefully if they do manage to add a tad more bass it doesnā€™t mess with Mids as that wouldnā€™t be a trade off Iā€™d be willing to make.

so tin p1 or the ikko oh10?

Thatā€™s apples and oranges tbhā€¦would come down to what you listen to and the sort of sound signature you preferā€¦oh and the P1 really needs an amp to sound itā€™s best.

Interesting but unless thereā€™s a big improvement Iā€™ll stick with the OG 1ā€™s which I still love.

I still really like the P1, definitely has a place in my collection. I wonder what the P2 will bring to the tableā€¦?

An unrequested ownerā€™s re-review after a couple months of use (brought on by my getting the SMSL M300 MkII + SP200 stack):

They were really good when I first got them (running them just off a FX Audio DAC-X6), but this new stack really allowed them to impress the shit out of me. I was just listening to the original Jesus Christ Superstar concept album [MCA Records ā€Žā€“ MCAD2-11542 US 1993], and itā€™s not a very good recording by any means, itā€™s kind of like listening to a cassette, but Heaven on Their Minds came on and the thought I had was ā€œwow Iā€™ve never heard the piano in this part of the songā€

Then I put on Michael Jacksonā€™s Wanna Be Startinā€™ Something (Thriller [Epic ā€Žā€“ 35惻8P-11 JAP 1983 - DE-EMPHASIZED]) and it was like all the instruments were bouncing around my skull (in a VERY good way). Imaging is spectacular.

Then I put This Must Be the Place by Talking Heads from the original Speaking in Tongues [Sire ā€Žā€“ 9 23883-2 US] release (not the extended version that came later on) because itā€™s one of the most dynamic tracks I have (DR 18). These can handle volume no problem at all without ruining the dynamics!

Moved on to electronic music. I know people have complained they have no bass ā€“ and sure, this is coming from someone whoā€™s not a bass-head ā€“ but I didnā€™t find them lacking in bass for a second. I have the KZ ZSX in mind, which I use for portable and theyā€™re basically a cheaper version of the Shouer Tape (which is why I sold my Tapes). The KZ gives you that sub-bass boom but itā€™s more about the feeling of bass than actual sound of the bass, if that makes sense.

So Iā€™ll put it like this: the P1 always has bass. To my mind it even has more than adequate bass most of the time. But itā€™s like you have the option to listen to it at moderate volume on low gain in order to sit back and listen to the lifelike timbre of the instruments, OR you can crank up the volume at high gain and have the bass blow your ears off without ever sounding off. In that respect itā€™s kind of the opposite of the Tapes, which only sound absolutely amazing IF you keep the volume down. Iā€™d say thatā€™s pretty impressive. (But I am leaving open the possibility that I may have never heard proper bass-head 2.0 subwoofers low-end quality. However I do know what natural low end sounds like)

Listened to Frank Ocean ā€“ Nikes, Soulacybin - Siber, Kid Cudi - Dance 4 Eternity, Substantial - Enjoy Yourself [Pretending toā€¦] and a few others and the only bass drawback to my ears is when the mastering of a particular song already crushed the bass in the recording, but I donā€™t think those would sound satisfying on any IEM.

There were a few times when a track is too busy in the treble range that I was overwhelmed, not because the trebleā€™s bad (and there is no sibilance), but because such detail and imaging can get fatiguing when thereā€™s so much bouncing around inside your skull. Like on this track by Grace Jones, where there is so much information it can be too much to handle.

My favorite aspect of the P1 is definitely the midrange. Female vocals sound absolutely amazing, instruments sound lifelike and natural and itā€™s great for acoustic stuff.

Absolute recommendation to anyone who can amp them. Not saying you need a THX, but you really do need power to be amazed. But you definitely donā€™t need an amp to enjoy music on them.
