I have heard a Starfield and own both the Aria and Mele, and tend to the think the Starfield is the better complement to the Mele for the reasons you gave. From 6k-11k they are pretty close.
I am assuming that more people own Aria than Starfield for two reasons, price, and the slightly recessed treble makes it easier to listen for longer periods. I chose it for the second one, but I am guessing the $30 was a good enough reason for most.
Yup I agree with the treble being better (at least more forward) on Starfield vs Mele. But I don’t think it’s that much of an improvement, which is why I’m considering a set that has good bass that can slam when called but also excellent mids and treble. And apparently that set is the Tea lol.
Personally, SF is still not good enough in the treble & soundstage to keep as a second set along with Mele. I said before that I’m going to sell SF to help pay for a set that will be an excellent all-rounder, like the ones that @nymz mentioned above. Essentially, I wanna replicate @nymz’s IEM combo can I just be you, @nymz?
Personal fav: Mele > tea > ej07m
DD path: Mele > tanchjim Oxygen
Multiple kingpins: Mele > Teas + Oxygen + N3/b2/dusk
Metal (according to an expert) : DQ6 > 3DT
Full BA (according to my preferences): Lokahi > rsv > U12T/helios might be good but fit
One set wonder : Teas
The other name that comes to mind is @Resolution , when I think of people with more than a few sets that I covet. New MEST MKII, plus I am guessing a few others on my list of sets that I am not getting anytime soon.
At some point just storing them has to be a whole separate problem. I know watch boxes are popular around here, but that creates another problem, because if I add another watch box, my wife will ask questions, because I also own too many watches.
I think I said roughly the same thing about regular headphones just the other day somewhere.
I would have fewer regrets if I stopped after buying the KPH30i. Of course I am pondering my first set of magnetic planar headphones, so f— me running.
I’m eyeing the Aladdin
Luckily I have enough dac/amps, dongles, and tips for now, so just need that end-game IEM to retire peacefully well, that and my handy Mele, of course!
I was waiting for Xenns UP that arrived today to do a 3-Way deathmatch between UP, Variations and EJ07m.
I’ll post it when I’m done. I’m also going Spain for the weekend so I might take some days. Also I’ll need time with UP… I could describe Variations in 5mins, EJ07m in 15mins, UP will take some days.
HBB already has a lot of iem with excellent treble extensions. It could be that HBB gives a better Treble touch on mele. Does the single driver limitation on Mele have an effect so that HBB can’t provide a better treble extension? I’ve seen the graph, Mele has no resonance peak which is the upper treble area. Maybe this factor makes the treble on Mele too smooth. I’ve also tried the jelly cable attached to Mele. Jelly cable makes Mele have a slightly better sound quality from bass to treble, cleaner, and slightly better clarity. Besides the quality of the drivers, Does the nozzle fabric filter on the Mele also have an effect on the sound?
