(update in progress) Falenkor's Competitive Headphone Write Up. Now with added Hardware explanations!

Which of the Sennheisers would you recommend? If they’re Drop collaborations, don’t need to mention them since they’re sadly sold only in USA.

Do the Tygr 300r benefit from the Liquid Spark?
How do they sound in comparison to the 880?
Are they a downgrade in soundstage + imaging?

I can increase my budget till 300€ for the headphones, in other words double the budget, if I feel that there’s a reason. And at this point, I’m willing to try things before making a final decision.

I believe that I have a treble intolerance, but what’s super weird is that my speakers sound relatively similar to the headphones, but they don’t bother my ears/head after listening music… Maybe it’s the gaming volume, or maybe it’s something subtle and hard to notice that slowly drills my brain.

Kind of lost on the reason… Never felt this before, but I’ll do my tests in order to understand this better.

Honestly, I’m just looking for something with great musicality spectrum, and also with the competitive edge of the sound stage and imaging. Sound is hard to describe, I’d say something less trebleslish, but still clear and detailed with great sound staging and imaging would be something that I’d love to try.

Appreciate your help!

598 works as the alternative to 58x and for a while was quite popular. 560s is alright but a but bright. Yea unfortunately 58x is drop…

Tygr are a revision of the 990 but in 32 ohms. They don’t change sound that much at all through amps but just need power to sound right.

880 are a mid centric neutral bright signature and gain a bit of bass in 600 ohms. 990 are a sharp v or a smooth v depending on 250 or 600 ohm. Tygr are a warm signature with a slight amount of treble and slight mid recession. It’s a very dialed back signature of the 990 if anything…

They don’t have the air and super detail of the 990,this comes from treble which the tygr is much more towards a warm signature, but are still very large in staging and laser accurate. They work just fine in practically any scenario however they are fussy about eq and can distort rather easily. Bass despite being warm has zero issues in competitive. It’s a fantastic headphone for both casual and competitive for those who are treble sensitive yet still want the competitive edge

Not to many headphones with a proper balanced neutral signature have a large stage and very accurate imaging sadly.

I’d give it some time try to figure out the issue…

If the beyers don’t work for you, depending on the fps, I would think either the sennheisers or the akg will fit you fine… for akg look up k712 or k7xx signatures and sennheiser is 598 less you can somehow find 58x

I should mention if your using the 250 ohms… theres less treble issues on the 600 ohm variants

Thanks a lot for your input! Well I’m playing mostly Valorant, so that’s all I care game wise. Outside gaming I do care a lot for quality in the music that I listen to.

I’m using the 600ohm variants on both of 880 and 990. I believe the 880 are a better fit for me, but I still require some more days and longer sessions to truly understand the differences between both, both at gaming and music listening.

I’ll take a look at the different headphones you mentioned, including the Tygr 300. Do you believe they’ll all benefit with the current Liquid Spark + E30?

I’m just trying to understand if the Amp+Dac are keepers or if I should somehow return them, since I need to return them till the end of the weekend if that’s not the case.

If you happen to have any other headphones / setups in mind please let me know and I’ll gladly order/try them, as long they’re for sale in Europe x)

Thanks a lot!

Since it’s a smaller fps you don’t need a real large soundstage… any of the ones I’ve mentioned will work just fine. As for music? Definitely depends on your preference as theres a lot of characteristics in sound quality.

Tygr will have the least benefit with your current beyers having the most. If you want to be more technical the current sound your getting from the 990 and 880 are not at their best. The two scale immensely and respond heavily to higher grade amps and dacs gaining better sound the further up the chain they kinda grow with the setup which is nice imo but it depends on if you even like the signature or if you plan to really delve into the hobby

I think your fine less a warmer sound isn’t your preference. If your wanting a more neutral and clean approach that would be the jds atom stack or schiit heresy and modi stack, theres some others but they cost a little more

My recommendations can go up into a much higher budget, though it depends on your budget and precisely what your searching for. If you don’t know your own sound preferences I would say start low and try to find what suits you best then once you find your more ideal sound go high and get a real nice setup. Amp to headphone synergy is a thing too some amps can make a headphone sound quite terrible

Okay since this is probably going to be my last stop before i purchase anything i’m laying it on all on the table. I’m currently a console gamer who plays Warzone on the ps5 and i’m looking to upgrade from my Astros. I don’t have a budget and i’m looking for something that specializes in footsteps , detailing, and separation, and a good sound stage. They also need to be able to be powered by my ps5 since that is my primary source. I don’t really care about having a mic for i can buy a separate one. I heard the dt 1990s are overwhelming in those regards, currently i’m stuck between the mmx 300, philips shp9500, beyerdynamics tygr, pc38x and so on. I was wondering what would be your best combo recommendation for somebody in my scenario. I want these to be my upgrade for the next couple years.

I am not familiar with the ps5’s audio capabilities but if it’s at all like ps4, I highly recommend an amp as none of these headphones will be properly driven due to lacking power. Mind you, you don’t need a crazy expensive unit but an amp is better than the onboarding audios. Due to this restriction I cant particularly recommend anything excluding gaming headsets which would just be pc38x.

The 1990s are a monster in competitive, mind you that the sound engine in warzone is pretty trash to begin with, nonetheless this performs incredibly well to the point of overkill. Not needed really, and cannot be driven off on boards as it’s a 250 ohm headphone

Your better off buying a cheap dt 770 at 250 ohm with an amp and a mic… as this is just a revision of the 770 but triple what you can find the 770 for.

It’s alright, good entry level not the best sound… recommend beyerdynamic for gaming any day.

Good to a literal fault. Laser accurate, large stage. Lacks in air and takes some time to get used to in placements outside of that this particular headphone gets top Marks from me for both casual and competitive gamers alike. The alternative and better placement headphone to this is the 990 but that definitely needs an amp and is bright as hell

Gaming headset and potentially the best on the market for competitive play… terrible for music, large fps, and imo casual play.

Well for starters, I do recommend getting an amp… it doesnt need to be something crazy expensive… even just a soundblaster g6($120) will do you well as in the future if you ever want to upgrade you don’t have to worry so much about power demands.

Other than that the beyers will suit you fine. I’d sa y skip the closed back less you really need it. 880 990 and tygr will work just fine… you definitely want an amp and dac of a higher grade if your going to roll 1990 or t1. 880 and 990 perform their best at 600 ohm. Tygr can technically run ampless but is a bit questionable if ps5 is strong enough

would the soundblaster support the 990 , tygr , 1990 good on console?

Yes, it supports the 600 ohm versions of the beyers, and by this I mean it also has head room so it definitely gets loud, and is gamer based so can be plugged into consoles. Though it used to be optical ports for the ps4… I think it’s just USB now though since the optical port was removed on these new gen consoles. The g6 doesn’t offer the best sound quality but for $120 it definitely isn’t too bad for a gamer

what amp do you think would offer the best quality and supports console?

There is no best in these cases all of it’s pretty subjective. Personally I prefer something with good spatial recreation, so I’d say asgard 3 If you can get one otherwise one of lake peoples amps are a solid alternative. Pairing that to a respectable dac(something clean and neutral ideally) would work in the most ideal sense. Entry level is a $250 maximum budget, ideal is at $450 maximum, and anything over that is total overkill and not needed for gaming.

Entry level that works fine though is the schiit stack magni or heresy with the modi or jds atom stack. You can throw in Donald dac instead of the other dacs but this is a bit much imo as it makes things a bit brighter and fatiguing

Cheapest combo units being schiit hel, ifi zen dac(balanced port has to be used for 600 ohms or more demanding so extra costs here due to cabling), and soundblaster g6.

In terms of connections though the dac in particular has to have the cables to connect to the ps5, which I cannot check at the moment as I’m preoccupied with work

Not true?? These can even be shipped Sweden.

I have used the TYGR, 58x, 6xx, Dt770 250ohm, fostex X00 on the PS5 controller as the main source, the PS5 seemed to power them perfectly fine and got louder enough. The 6xx were definitely harder to power but still got okay loudness.

I had to send in my JDS element 2 in for repair so I was using the controller to power my headphones. The controller definitely wasn’t as detailed as a Dac Amp but will be perfectly fine in the meantime. It didn’t affect my game play for FPS.

hmm, just because it gets loud does not mean they are properly powered though… are you sure there was no issues? I would mainly be concerned with 6xx and 770 of those in particular as the others are not as demanding in power. Regardless, if it doesn’t need an amp for headphones that’s good news

I believe they can get shipped anywhere but you do pay a hefty extra fee

do you know if it’s possible to connect some of those recommended dacs/amp to the ps5

Pretty sure the G5 or G6 will be supported, if not already. EDIT: Maybe I didn’t qoute the right DAC/amp you meant but those are probably guaranteed to be supported. And they are great for the money.

I know G6 was supported with a PlayStation 4 and I would imagine there’s a firmware to be compatible with the PS5. the PS5 does not have an optical Port so something like a schiit stack probably wouldn’t work, I don’t think the PlayStation recognizes the schiit products.

For sure the JDS element 2 is definitely recognized through USB on the PlayStation 5, if you end up getting this Dac/amp make sure you tell JDS it’s for PlayStation so they can load a special firmware onto it to help with the low volume problem that other decks have with the PlayStation.

how is jdl compatibility with those headphones mentioned earlier?

Yeah, seems like theres going to be some complications with ps5 and dac amps then if it needs special firmwares. That would be a question to ask Schiit about if someone wanted to use their products… then again, if G6 works on ps5 then you can just grab a G6 + an asgard 3 and connect the two using the G6 as the dac… granted you’d need certain cables… it’s just the dac that connects the consoles.

@Falenkor I’m not the best person to describe certain things, I might not have the right idea what properly powering them means. But to me the 770s seem to have plenty of rumble to them when used, and they sounded perfectly fine with detail. The 6xx seems to work fine, mid sounded great and I could hear a little texture to the bass.

What do you possibly mean by complications with special firmware? I have plug my element 2 into my PC, table, Switch, Surface Book, Phone and never experience anything that it wasn’t compatible with or sound problems. Can always send them an email they’re super friendly, fast reply, andexcellent customer support. When I messed up my amp from my own doing, I sent it in and they didn’t charge me one cent and it only took them a couple hours fix it. They have really good reputation and I’ll probably purchase future equipment through them cuz they’re great to deal with.

the first thing to go on the 770 is the bass, it becomes uncontrolled flabby and then recessive by a good amount…

JDS issued a special firmware like you mentioned so it can work on the ps5, Other companies units may very well have this same potential issue to where they won’t work correctly on the console without special firmware being implemented into the unit.

agreed, great customer service, I think I will go ahead and send Schiit an Email about this involving their units to see if they have any insight on whether or not things such as modi, modius, fulla, and hel are compatible to the ps5.
