Now I have searched and searched but can not decide, I am looking for a pair of headphones that are suitable for console gaming, Xbox series x, Ps5. Playing mixed fps and adventure games, Are there any good headphone consoles?
Today I am sitting with a pair of old Sennheiser 558
Can I just say that I would also recommend the new Arya SE. I spend quite a bit of my time gaming on my PC but also music listeningā¦so that is why I own such an expensive HP. Still, man it is fantastic in gaming.
I didnāt have time to read through the last couple months of comments here so perhaps they have been mentioned. If not, have you heard them @Falenkor ?
I also should mention I would never recommend such an expenseā¦unless you enjoy much more then gaming for audio.
There is but it depends on budget available. Xbox currently is the most finicky as like no amps and dacs work with it
The se version? No, not yet. I own the original. Assuming se is just as good tho. Granted I never advise such expense for gaming

100-400 dollar , Play om xbox X and ps5.
for future reference, please refrain from sending messages to two different locations to me as they clogs up my inbox, taking up my time that would otherwise be spent potentially talking with another person.
as for what your looking for, you mention the audioengine d1 which is noted to drive 250 ohm headphones.
Tygr 300r or DT 880 250 ohm would be my suggestion from beyerdynamic
Sennheiser would be HD 560 less needing more balanced sound signature of which then itd be 58x Jubilee
Verticality and air would go to Hifiman 400SE
a different potentially cheaper more balanced approach would be either audio technicas air series with the 700x, 900x, 1000x, and 2000x or AKGās K7 series with k702, k712, previous k612(they are essentially the same headphone with minor changes), and k7xx all of which have differing signatures with k702 being the analytical one.
impossible to fully narrow down due to lacking information based on what game, any form of treble intolerance, and what set preferences
I like play fps on console and platform game, I think i choice Tygr 300r, But so bad i can not mount mic , So i need to mod this.
Hey Falenkor,
if you still have the Tygr laying around, i would recommend to try it with the grey pads of the DT880/DT990. I played some Apex and Overwatch today with the grey pads and was actually really impressed, it performed much better than with the black pads. Usually the Tygr has a bit too much bass for my liking (for pure comp gaming), the pad swap reduces the bass.
that is the number one thing I usually recommend when they find the tygr having too much in the bass⦠The black pads on the tygr are EDT 990 VB or the black pads of the DT 990⦠they sound different than the grey in the low end and feel slightly different.
Hey @Falenkor do you have any thoughts on how the Beyer 1990 Proās compare to the Audio-Technica AD700? And likewise how the Sundaras compare to the Aryaās?
Over the years Iāve gone through the K702s, the PC37X, PC38X, Sundaras, T60RPs, and 177X with Dekoni Pad rolls, and I just donāt think any of them can compete with the footstep focused AD700s.
Iām also interested in the Aryas, because Iām a huge fan of how the Sundaras sound in single player games, but would love to know if their bigger sibling would be an upgrade to them.
Currently running off the Asgard 3, but have been looking at the FiiO K9 Pro.
zeus or tygr would fit those requirements best
comparing a headphone thats normally around $70 to headphones $400 and up? Same with sundara compared to its $1000+ counter part⦠theres not much to say other then extreme upgrade material. 700x is alright but its not really that fantastic of a headphone to begin with⦠course this also depends on equipment and person. If you want a direct upgrade path to that 700x swing to 2000x as its just an improved headphone through and through.
k702 has imaging issues, 700 has separation issues, 37 and 38 are trash to begin with, sundara isnāt the best on imaging but excels at the way it sounds and soundstage as well as things such as texture and detail, t60rp is only there along t50 if you mod it specifically for the use case even then its a bit on teh questionable side of things, 177x is very solid though it depends on a persons hearing its a bit too bassy
wouldnāt hurt to check them out or edition xs then
depends on what your looking to upgrade
scratch out sundara then
if warmths the goal then tygr or zeus will be the higher recommendation since both of those are V signature⦠and if soundstage is the goal then its the Zeus you want.
Hey, Iām new here so excuse me if it is not the right place to ask for recommendations (and Iām French so my English may be flawed).
My question is about 2 headphones that are often mentioned here, sorry about the repetition but I have few concerns for which I did not find definitive answers. As a newbie, I need help to decide what will suits me best between the Senn HD 560s and the Tygr 300 R.
To begin with, my usage, I need them for competitive fps, mainly Overwatch and Valorant, and some Fortnite and Apex every now and then. On a purely competitive side, which one is the best for the games I play?
Plus I listen to music when I work from home, so very long sessions and I need them to be really comfortable all day long, not fatiguing my ears too much, and I wear glasses which could be an issue for some phones.
But, and it is important, I suffer from tinnitus, especially from the right ear, when I wear headphones for too long I begin to feel pain in the ear but Iām not really sure about its origin. I currently only own a Sony XM3, and Iām thinking the closed back design can be a cause of the fatigue, or maybe the ear pads pressing my glasses but the clamping force is pretty light (I have not a big head, more on the small spectrum I believe). I absolutely love them, the Noise Cancelling save my travels and I can enjoy my music everywhere in peace. They are really ābassyā but I like that since I mostly listen to Hip-Hop and Electronic music. (Could their sound profile causes fatigue too? Too much bass maybe?)
Hence, Iām looking to open back designs, as they are superior in soundstage and Imaging for gaming if I understood correctly and the open design might help with my tinnitus as the sound goes out instead of getting traped and āresonatesā as in a closed one. Could it be correct or my belief is totally wrong? If you have an idea about it that will help me a lot. Iām not looking in a bass oriented pair since it is not optimal for sound cues and I have the Sony if I want that.
Another requirement is that I do not own an Amp and my budget is too tight for one so I will drive them directly from my mobo (B450 Tomahawk Max), do you think it will be doable with these? (If you have a budget friendly Amp if that is not the case Iām interested too. I might upgrade in the long term but I have currently over priorities.) Do I lose in imaging and performance if I run them without an Amp or is it just the sound level that will be limited (I do not listen at high volume, with my tinnitus, again, you get itā¦)
To summarize my researchs, the sound signature of the 560s should be perfect but Iām really concerned about the comfort as the clamping force is said heavy, even if they do break down with time, do you still recommend them? Their comfort still got praised but Iām afraid that the pression on my glasses or ears might worsen the fatigue and pain from my tinnitus. How is the imaging compared to the Tygr?
On the other hand, it is the sound signature of the Tygr that concerns me, since there is more bass they could be less competitive, the high trebbles and sibilance of beyers could also cause fatigue with my tinnitus. But the comfort get praised a lot, and the wide soundstage could help with fatigue since I might not feel the sound directly into my head, more like speakers, if that makes sense. How the soundstage compares with the hd 560s?
I also read that its frequency response mesured recently was a bit surprising, could they have made some changes?? (Beyerdynamic Tygr 300 R Gaming Headphones - Official Headphone Model Discussion - The HEADPHONE Community), See the peak at 200Hz. I thought about maybe EQ them to soften it but I also read here that they do not responded really well to that, is it true? How so?
For EQ profiles I looked at that: https://getpocket.com/fr/read/3536082806
I would have love to try them directly in a shop but the sanitary situation in France prevents me to do so.
Any other suggestion is appreciated, thanksā a lot if you take time to read me and give your advises.
TL;DR: Best headphones under 200⬠(so without an amp) for competitive fps + music over long sessions. The HD560S, TYGR 300 R, other?.
Most comfortable as possible with glasses, I suffer from Tinnitus too so take that into account.
i own beyrdynamic 990 250ohm paired with soundblaster g6, Sold them both.
i liked the 990s but they are so SHARP! due to the treble?! it actually hurt my ear.
i want a headphone and an amp/dac.
only for gaming so wont spend too much, i got my eyes on x2hr, shp9500 and sennheiser hd 599. if there is any better ones, feel free to suggest. and please what amp/dac should i get?
in a straight forward answer? there isnāt an answer to this. It is based on the person in general and how they perceive the sound that the headphone possess as both are exceptional
Sennheiser does clamp harder, however both are rather different in ear cups⦠again depends on the person⦠if you can find a way to try a beyer and sennheiser that would be great.
It could be any number of things including the bass⦠however, I also have a dear friend that suffers from this issue as well when he uses closed back headphones⦠while unfortunately open backs leak sound he has no choice as close backs cause him a lot of problems such as this⦠I would recommend trying of course an open back to see if this solves it.
You are correct on this, however there are some cases where the imaging and stage is fine on closed backs⦠its just open are usually superior.
Doable? yes, but it will not sound as good whatsoever⦠the changes of an amp/dac from a motherboard tend to be rather drastic in many cases.
Depending on budget, there should be one that you can use especially with lower requiring headphones like tygr. You wonāt so much lose imaging but it tends to screw with the sound signature overall with things such as being bassier, distortion, or muffling.
Its highly advised to stretch them for a few days as it can be rather severe to those who wear glasses based on head size of course. If the signature they possess is what your after then of course I will still recommend them but only after they are stretched to lessen up that clamp.
Both are extremely accurate, though I find the tygr more accurate in terms of positional imaging⦠the 560s has the upper hand in terms of mid frequencies which can push it to being better⦠it really depends on the person in this case due to these differences⦠despite common belief you canāt just pick up whatever headphone and be comfortable/good with it in many cases⦠comfort is a top concern for gamers let alone signature. Then again, if the comfort is good and its not a bass cannon⦠its usually rather acceptable
this is barely a concern. Itās slightly too much and fixable through a pad swap to the silver pads from the 990 or just some EQ adjustment to dial it in just a bitā¦
it could, however tygr has like the least amount of treble in the cheaper beyer lineups next to the newer 900 pro x over there⦠in most cases the treble of the tygr is noted to not be a problem at all even to those sensitive⦠I would however, still advise caution due to tinnitus.
this is a perk of the tygr as the presentation is speaker-like⦠the 560s really doesnāt have this as much and in terms of comfort beyer is usually pretty top notch
large but dampened as all beyers usually are⦠beyers use heavy dampening to make the headphones feel more semi open rather than open back. They do this usually to just contain the treble
That is upper bass and lower mids⦠primarily mids. This is the spot you actually hear complaints on and yes this is the spot you EQ back a few decibels to essentially āfixā the signature for many people. This graph is definitely accurate.
They respond well to small adjustments just not large ones⦠it causes the headphones to break up a bit and become fussier, distort, among other things. You also need more power from preamp when your using EQ as well⦠too much power can harm a headphone to begin with and tygr is only 32 ohm
I would highly encourage finding a way to try them⦠if anything try a beyer in general⦠something like 880 or 900 pro x would give you a general idea granted tygr is a bit different⦠itll still give you a feel for how beyer is on your head and their house sound.
Many times I have seen the tygr sell for less than 200⬠if you can snag one for cheaper you can probably get a rather cheap amp/dac to go with it around roughly 60⬠maybe less that will drive it fine⦠560s -may- be able to do the same but I see less deals on them in this regard.
I do warn about this, yes its from the treble.
bassy, eh? needs modifications to really be any good imo, and 599 again⦠bassy. HD 598, HD 560s, 58x Jubilee, HD 650s, HD 660s all will work from sennheiser⦠beyer if you liked beyers build and comfort⦠go to tygr, 880(880 is the neutral bright variation to the 990⦠much less bright and more controlled in comparison⦠with the mids being more involved⦠people find much more enjoyment in 880 typically due to the better balance tonality), or 900 pro x. If you want good soundstage and still more balanced out look towards akg k702 or k712 / k7xx check their frequency charts for the differences⦠as 702 is brighter and you may not like that one⦠akg though has imaging concerns⦠the other is of course ad 700x but they are rather cheap in terms of build quality⦠lastly HE400SE is like a miniature sundara and can take you rather far if thats your thing⦠though quality control is a concern they are still solid as hell
amp/dac? depends on budget. Canāt suggest without one.
Wow thanksā a lot for your detailed answer, I can get the Tygr for 110⬠and the HD 560s for 150ā¬, but need a Mic too. I looked for a modmic (around 60ā¬) or a Boom pro for 30⬠for the Senns so my budget is almost reached. But if I invest a little more, letās say 70 to 100 for an amp, would I have something decent, do you have some recommandations at this price point? I heard some good reviews from Schiit Fulla but in Europe they are a bit pricey, 145⬠currently.
Could you elaborate on this? I have no idea what it means.
What do you mean by ādampenedā exactly?
Regarding the fatigue, if they are more semi-open do you think I will benefit less from them than from the openness of the hd 560 ? If the soundstage and positional imaging of the latter are good enough and ensure me less pain from my tinnitus it could be worth.
Thank you again for your time, I learned a lot about sound this past days browsing the internet thanks to people like you.
In the next few days I will try to find a place to test some Beyers and Senns but for now Iām more enclined to go for the Tygr, EQ sligtly down the upper bass and up mids and look for a decent amp. Then I will get the most of these phones, it will be more costly but might be worth it on the long run!
I looked at the difference between the AD2000 and AD2000X and it seems like the original pair had a bit more of an upper mid focus similar to my AD700s.
Thereās a pair on Ebay for $600 (or best offer), but at that price you do have to consider a DT1990 Pro. Comparing frequency responses between the DT1990 to the AD700, they both have fairly present upper mids and a ātreble mountainā at 10K. Itās just an observation, as slight changes in frequency response can change the sound signature.
@Falenkor Congratulations on the detailed guide. Sorry for my english, is not my first language. I am not an expert on sound, Iāve been reading on the forum for a while, but the more I read the more I get confused lolā¦
I would like a headphone suitable for FPS (a mixture of competitive and fun with friends, not tryharding) like Battlefield, Tarkov, Warzone, Halo and Battle royale, I also play other games of different genres (Like Forza Horizon 5, RDR2, ecc). I canāt spend much, in fact I look on amazon warehouse (very good or like new conditions). I have an Asus Strix b450 motherboard and SupremeFX s1220a codec which should support up to 600ohm theoretically. I am confused about which headset is the most suitable due to my little knowledge. Donāt need Mic.
What iām looking for the moment are:
- DT880 Edition (250ohm) used for 130ā¬, sometimes 600ohm used for 125ā¬
- DT990 Edition (250ohm) used for 125, as far as i understand this is little more fun than dt880
- Tygr 300r (b-stock on BD website) for 120ā¬
- HD 599 new for 135ā¬
- Last Philips Fidelio X2HR used for 100⬠(canāt find sph9500). For this I want to explain why, I know you donāt like them for excessive bass if I understand correctly. in the guide linked to the first post of Mad Lust Envy there is the review of the fidelio X2 (Which should be almost identical to the X2HR). In that guide he considers them excellent for any type of game, even competitive and for general use. So I thought about reducing the low frequencies when I play competitive (example with Equalizer APO or Dolby Access which I already have) and leave them standard for use in other games and for music / movies. I donāt know if itās a stupid idea.
If you could clarify my ideas I would be grateful. Sometimes I also watch some movies, so if there was one suitable for both needs, otherwise priority to games. Thank you
100$-150$.
i think i will buy HD 560s, so what amp/dac do you recommend to power them? thank you in advance.
Hey @Falenkor, I find this dac/amp Fiio Olympus E10K for a reasonable price (85ā¬), what do you think about it? Should pair well with the Tygr right? If you have any good affordable alternative Iām interested.
First holy hell, lots of messages since I have been gone⦠lol
youd want a modmic in this case⦠less you can find like a yeti blackout or something for that cheap⦠sometimes you find them used market for like $50
Depends heavily on which headphone you choose. For those? Fiio E10k would be alright⦠a bit lacking but nothing severe. Usually youd want⦠I want to say between $140 - $200 ideally⦠this way you get a full on entry level and never need to look back. if you can set some time to side to save a bit more on this⦠itd be more worth while in my opinion.
Should skip on Schiit for other countries like this less you find them in approperiate pricing as otherwise they just arenāt worth it.
EQ causes the signature to fluctuate⦠you have to add amplification to the headphone to keep things maintained through the use of preamplification⦠mind you software like PEACE APO do have a pre amp bar on the top of their program to push more power⦠however you still want an amp/dac to provide such power. EQ can get rather messy if you just go randomly fussing with it without knowing what your doing and without enough power.
Heavy filters are placed inside the headphone to maintain its signature and keep it from essentially murdering your ears with treble. This is commonplace when it comes to beyers. If you look at beyers newer headphones or hell even Tygr 300r youll see a foam piece covering the speaker⦠it has more dampeners in the ear cups as well. This causes it to feel more semi open rather than fully open and breathable.
They are a bit more on an even playing field but in this regard it will change how ācomfortableā the sound presentation is to you on a personal level. Personally, I prefer the speaker like more enclosed nature of the tygr 300r over 560s⦠but 560s has its place⦠and it damn sure does better in the mid frequencies.
Not a bad idea, something to note though is its worth investing a bit extra if needed for an amp and dac⦠they will most likely out last that headphone easily so that particular piece of the setup is worth more to you⦠it also helps change the sound and can make headphones sound better.
It did indeed but the X dialed things in a bit more to balance it outā¦
Thats rough since I can get a 1990 for $400⦠id take 1990 over that just to save money but both do spectacularly well⦠thats a heavy handed preference pick right there. I think itd be worth -trying- the 1990 if you can somehow⦠otherwise since you love the 700 its more worth for you to look at the 2000 instead since it seems the 700 really jives with you. It could very well be the house sound that you find the most appealing.
I would advise caution on just simply reading charts. They tell you very little. The presentation of sound between 700 and 1990 is very different⦠1990 will rip apart soundtracks and pick out any flaws not to mention far exceeds 700 in terms of separation of sound⦠topped off with extremely accurate imaging. Its designed for studio use but for competitive gaming its⦠quite something
for just 560s? E10k, if not caring much for sound quality⦠soundblaster g6⦠if you can shop used market you might find a liquid spark and topping D10 or schiit products of sorts⦠some of the entry levels in other words for around $70 apiece.
This will work fine for either, as mentioned above though it would be best to save up for a dedicated unit setup⦠but if you want to swing e10k⦠I see nothing wrong with that.
Hey there, welcome to hifiguides! Thanks for the post, your english is fine. Letās see if I can help you out here.
So, a more casual player then. Got it.
It will support up to around 250 ohm headphones, 600 ohm is pushing it⦠it definitely will not power the beyers for example at 600 ohm.
Just for future reference, a motherboard will alter a signature and -will not- provide the best experience to your headphone. As long as your okay with this and understand this, we can move on⦠I just want to advise some caution on this in particular, you can always get the amp and dac later(it doesnāt need to be crazy expensive⦠just depends on the headphone)
Saves me from asking lol
if you had an amp, I would highly encourage the 600. Due to not having the amp though I would say 250 ohm. This headphone is a heavy jack of all trades one as said in my guide⦠It ticks pretty much every box, as long as you can tolerate its treble. You can get replacement pads to also change the signature quite well⦠however, it does sound a bit over dampened compared to some other headphones.
more fun? yes, its a V signature(bass and treble emphasized) however, explicitly bright⦠I canāt recommend this if you do not know whether you are treble intolerant or not⦠if you have a way to test this headphone? Go for it⦠otherwise skip
Next to HD 560s this is the best headphone for a gamer without an amp within $200(excluding those in your case with a very powerful motherboard⦠as then 880 comes in to play⦠but all mentioned here work fine).
Skip, being removed from guide. Replaced by HD 560s
Flabby, uncontrolled, bleeding into the mids bass actually. Itās just not the best⦠its not a bad headphone by any means⦠I tend to be quite critical⦠in the case of FPS I would never encourage this headphone is all⦠I would hands down recommend a 9500 modified over it.
The original X2 was not so much warm as it was very bright in the treble⦠it would work better but its essentially the same as the 9500⦠so the X2 would work as well if you wish to try that⦠however, I would never encourage this over the 880 or tygr by any means
decent in competitive, good for others.
Equalizing takes more power and amplification⦠its rougher to do this, I would suggest against this less you pick up an amp and dac.
If you want a balanced approach⦠considering this is a low budget? go with⦠hm⦠58x jubilee or HD 560s from sennheiser⦠if your okay with a bit more dampening and want to prioritize build quality and are okay with more treble⦠swing for DT 880⦠if you want a bit more fun⦠pad swap the 880 to a suede or leather or something along those lines or grab tygr⦠tygr isnāt as flexible as 880 and is a one and done⦠its just not that good in the mids(vocals)
