(update in progress) Falenkor's Competitive Headphone Write Up. Now with added Hardware explanations!

hmm, Take it from this you mean direct orders through beyerdynamic are out of the question same with third party on the tygr?

As for 880… its the same power requirement as the DT 990, so if your 990 you tried was working… the 880 will work just as well

hmm… AKG k702 if were talking competitive gaming will work… Sennheiser 560s would be the other

ah well never mind then… thats actually a good deal

Maybe a akg 702 or 712 whatever you may can get for a good price ?

702 for analytical 712 for a bit more balanced

I found k 712 pro
K 702
K7xx
What’s the better one?

Subjective… but for competitive gaming… that would be k702. However, if you are treble intolerant you can swing for the other two…

^ that is the k7xx and k712(red)

and that is k712 vs k702(green)

You can also substitute in the k612 which is essentially just the k702 with some small changes like cable and the like if its cheaper

Try the Koss Porta Pros. Good for treble sensitive, light, cheap, shockingly good sound.

Tried some in ears called ER2SE upon recommendation of Thotstomp

Not bad… not great either yet passable

few have described its soundstage is incredibly large… This is quite a lot smaller than my T1 the overall space while defined, I can tell its depth/space pretty quickly… its not like the 600 series… somewhere around the average… not really that impressive however, this is passable in gaming its just less than average compared to a good open back

bass is lacking in terms of impact by a pretty large degree… and overall the signature is rather boring outside of its rather bright highs which are not sibilant and are noticeably smoothed

the overall signature in every respect is there yet… not there… theres something that feels… missing from each portion… bass is lacking impact, mids are lacking in terms of what seems like maybe some definition, highs are a bit too energetic though this could be a cause of the in ear

Comfort wise, I am not the biggest fan of anything that has to go deep as shit into my ear canal… its just not comfortable for me but its like the only way to get a really good sound out of these… the sound is fine… for hell what… $50 discounted? Despite my complaints at that price the sound on these is fucking ridiculously good I just despise this kind of comfort I assume you can change the buds out but regardless itll always have to plug your ears… however, they do offer impeccable isolation

imaging probably due to the more lacking soundstage but the imaging is spot on… like… VERY spot on… I just wish there was more stage to place things out further

timbre is quite exceptional… it seems their goal was to try to make this as accurate as possible… for such a price? Yeah, if your goal is natural in ear… this is definitely a solid damn choice even for a gamer

I don’t think I will be keeping this one personally… however, I will be searching for a new in ear(something that doesn’t have to like scratch up to my damn ear drum in terms of depth maybe? ugh). I will say though as I got a pair of er2XR as well with these… and the xr are fun as hell to listen to… same signature… just with a bunch more bass however, despite the added bass I don’t hear quality loss or anything… so quite fun to listen to it did however lose a bit of soundstage depth

Personally speaking, if your looking for an in ear with natural signature… good for competitive gaming and just well rounded as hell while also not breaking the bank… get these on their $50 sale as they are very solid… I did however have some issues with lesser units driving them so you may or may not need a small portable unit to push these to the fullest… Even on a dedicated amp like an asgard it has to be on high gain at around 35% volume knob

@Falenkor Great timing, as I am looking for something to use for tv watching in the summer, (the AC is unavoidably nearby.) I run a coax to my dac/amp. Thanks for mentioning the power requirement, which might limit their phone use
unless I provide extra there. PS is there a Cool over ear closed back you’d suggest? Was thinking maybe ATH k361 etc, but folks say pads are warm in hot weather. Thanks.

Absolutely… I was hesitant at first on these… and while they aren’t particularly a good fit for me… I will give them credit as they are very good in ears. I could probably change the tip to maybe something more foam or something to make them a bit more like an ear plug that I can adapt to personally… but I don’t feel like going down that rabbit hole as it is lol

I do have an A52 5g sitting here… pretty middle ground… one sec ill give it a whirl…

Okay so they will get loud… at 100% so no, I would say you’d want something to push this a little bit as I can tell this isn’t fully driven(slight further lack in the bass and some loss in detail). Nothing really strong or powerful… just stronger than the phones chip will work(less of course you have a more powerful phone than me lol)

Breathable closed backs? Thats harsh since no matter what closed backs are going to have a breathing problem. the best I can suggest is something with cloth or velour as your use case… since they breathe the best…

In terms of headsets this would be something like the Coolermasters 600 series since they can come in cloth… only other I can definitely encourage is the mmx which is just the dt 770. K361 does indeed get hot due to pad selection.

Ideally something with a cloth type pad material and curved drivers to give your ears some space would be preferred though a headphone with these two aspects like this in closed back I am honestly drawing a blank. It wouldn’t hurt though to create a thread inquiring about this… many others here can help you out with that.

@Falenkor Thanks for your time and good info. Sounds like a cooler closed back is the hardest to find. I’m considering one of the Etymotics, as I already use their -25db earplugs for club listening and they don’t bother me, tho it looks as tho the phones fit even deeper. Also considering an iem with good mids as a solution if the fit and isolation is good. Thanks again.

This one has to go like… pretty ridiculously far lol. If it didn’t block my hearing I would be amazed. It doesn’t come with foam though so if you wanted more isolation you could definitely pull it of with this by switching to a good foam tip

That would also be alright with these… the mids and highs are still very good on this… (perhaps a higher model?) just as I said its not the highest quality that I have heard. I’d say these are a worth a shot(but definitely get them at the discount rates, always good to save money)

@Falenkor Again, valuable info/suggestions. I do have some trouble inserting the rt. earplug so I will rethink this. Thanks so much. I may have to just buy an olina like everyone else…LOL

Anyone have experience with the DT1770 pro or the Fostex TH610? I’m trying to find a decent mid-tier closed back headphone to add something different to the collection. Ideally this would be my primary gaming headphone as well as I find I do better with closed backs given my current environment.

I’m unsure how Crinicle is regarded on this forum but whats the thoughts on this video?

Before I watch it, I’ll say good for on the go and efficient sets
But for power hungry HP or even some planar iem you want an amp to get the most out of it

Edit:
Hm after watching it i would say something I can agree with like it’s powerful enough for iems and the measurements are enough and you’ll hear more differences when changing the transducer
But power for HP i would personally dispute, i had lacking bass and harsh treble out of my t60rp when using a btr3k balanced (and that thing obliterates the dongle DAC ) and with a proper desktop amp those traits where gone

ughhhhh… from the pc38x… to the hd800s… to the headphones for gamers don’t matter… now this…? :expressionless:

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This… big time. Sure that little dongle will work… for most weak headphones that are like… what… around $150 ish depending on the ohms? Something like that… Like the tygr can run off something like that since it doesn’t really scale at all with higher grade equipment.

Now mind you, I will never say as he puts it… oh you should get an amp and dac to fix this headphone… I mean, if you don’t like the set of cans… most likely it isn’t the amp and dac that will fix it… HOWEVER, if you drive it from this dongle or motherboard…especially a motherboard there are cases where yeah… itll be loud… but the bass may suddenly be too much than usual… or just completely gone, you may lose a ton of detail, hell the soundstage could sound terrible. Things such as this need better equipment. It’s alot more in depth and theres a much larger explaination to how these things work than how he puts it which I am not about to type up.

Normally, as a gamer… no you do not NEED, emphasis on need, high grade equpment to really get you anywhere… as long as its strong enough and put bluntly -good- enough to fully drive that headphone… your fine… however, some headphones… such as the dt 880 at 600 ohms do have impedance swing so having stronger amps and dacs or using heavy EQ becomes a heavier reliance as it helps the headphone and makes it sound better. In most cases… the most you would need to carry you is the generic entry level setup of $200($140 used market or like… g6 if you really want to take it lower sometimes even lower depends on the headphone since E10k and others exist such as this dongle) as this will power essentially anything you really want to throw at it ranging anywhere all the way up to past $1k(yes, including the HD800S… however when you get past the $500 margin with things like T1 that exist your synergy and equipment becomes much more important… we have more expensive amps for reasons unlike some people who want to rely on BUT MUH MEASUREMENT all amps and dacs may indeed be designed flat but they DO change the sound regardless of what SOME may believe… however, these changes are marginal early on and the bigger changes to the sound are in between price brackets such as liquid spark to an asgard… or a bigger one a liquid spark to a liquid platinum which if you did any of that on a 600 ohm beyer you would immediately notice a large change less your someone who has some issues with hearing some frequencies since we all hear differently)

Since I know you bought the T1 2nd gen… if your really wanting to get a lot out of it… like big time… take it a step up to the $200 region and STOP there… yes the T1 will perform at higher price brackets… but in this regard you do not NEED to take it any further as at this point it’s 1. fully driven and 2. its imaging is on point with a full signature… it can become clearer… sometimes larger… hell even sometimes gain more detail yea but its not -needed- its just something for later. Take that from someone with units past $1k and I use this headphone nonstop… damn sure not placebo effect as I have had many others try that to make sure im not crazy… Could EQ it… buuut it tends to cause more harm than good

^ this… I never agree with crinacle… like… ever in most cases. My experiences in this hobby have been completely different with what he and others claim and are more in line with what others on here claim when it comes to changes… but then again, I do tend to use very heavy impedance headphones or those that are pickier on the equipment.

This video hardcore depends on what your running… something like an iem? low impedance… your fine. Something like the tygr? again low impedance your fine… take that shit up to HD 600 area where its 300 ohms or beyers 250 ohm + territory… or hell lets not even get started into some of the planars…? Your gonna want a strong amp and dac especially if you start looking at audeze since your going to want some EQ and good power for them.

Yeah, both work fine… fostex there does lean a bit more towards a neutral bright kinda territory… though I would encourage 177x GO instead of the 1770 since

  1. it has more uses… its a portable type headphone built after the 1770
  2. it naturally comes with a second set of pads from dekoni their sheepskins
  3. it doesn’t need strong equipment whatsoever to drive and in most cases will run off a phone at full
  4. Its essentially the same headphone but with a much more pleasant signature… a more balanced slightly U shape instead of a very sharp and bassy V shape
  5. 177x from my experience so far has been regarded as a better headphone through and through
  6. It runs a 3 pin mini xlr… you can get AKG’s adapter for 3 pin mini xlr - 3.5mm and use a v moda boom pro on it.

I just thought I should post it as was a bit unsure how that claim was made with power hungry headphones really.

its… and I mean this with the greatest respect just more complicated than that really. For power hungry headphones? Nah, the dongle won’t work… However, I mean… its like $10 and works on pretty much any low powered unit so its definitely worth buying… especially for gamers who want to enter this hobby its practically the absolute best thing you can do for yourself starting out. Hell, Tygr 300R + that apple dongle dac is pretty nuts… since you can grab the tygr at like $145, dongle for like $10, and then a modmic or dedicated mic for around $50-$60 putting you up to the price of a high grade steel series or something and you get more out of it.

Though as for specifically the T1… go to either an entry level setup if you want to save money or if you want to gain the full spectrum just make sure to go atleast asgard lengths and your fine… as theres no reason to go further than that in like… any regard(less its very very high end cans or something). This goes for any of the higher ohm value headphones. (note 250 ohm beyers… just go the basic entry level… 600 ohm 880… I would say just do the same and run some EQ instead.)

My experiences in this hobby have been completely different with what he and others claim and are more in line with what others on here claim when it comes to changes

Yeah, I feel like when people tell me amps and DACs don’t matter it’s just gaslighting because I can hear the difference between $100 and $500 gear like really clearly, even on low impedance headphones like the Koss Portable Pros not to mention Sennheisers. This is especially true with the set who say things like you can’t trust your lying ears and only measurements mean anything, which is like, I don’t listen to things with a measurement rig.
