ath m40x-100$+ear pad swap
hd 599-180$
fidelio x2hr-170$
which one is better, i know m40x are closed-back.
but i’m torn between these, immersive and fun come first. and will do fine in competitive. not a pro here anyways.
Can you get a hd 560s, did see them new for 130€ on Amazon, would be a more neutral sound but also very capable for gaming
Think it should be better than a 599, although i only had a 598 as a preference point
X2hr has more soundstage but imo a muddy bloated base
560s i heard is is boring due to its balanced sound signature.
That’s why i choose 599 from sennheiser line up. It’s warm, has base not that much but it’s there. But lacks soundstage, good imaging.
I don’t want sweaty competitive headphones. I play single player A LOT.
With comp games here and there.
Hm wouldn’t call the 560s boring more of a neutral bass response, so it’s there and goes down low but certainly no bass cannon, so if you like some umpf it’s not the HP for you
For the m40x with pad swap i did hear it’s better than the m50x but not sure it’s worth the price, maybe someone here that has any experience with them ?
Other question is EQ an option and do you have a DAC Amp or does it have to work with a dongle or a controller?
All in all i would have recommend the tygr but i remember you couldn’t find them
If you like warm maybe consider shelling out the extra money for the HD6XX which is stellar?
yep sadly.
the thing is, i haven’t tried a warm headphone my only experience was with dt 990.
and they were v-shaped, i guess?!
they were a step up big time but got annoyed from there overwhelming trible. other than that they were so good to me.
6xx unavailable to me.
yes, gsx 1000… i know i know it’s weak. but got it for half the price literally. and i won’t buy high demanding HPs , so its weakness isn’t a big deal.
i will try to list my “taste”.
1-Soundstage.
2-not lacking in bass. but not overwhelming.
3-good imaging.
4-comfort, can’t stress that enough.
Hm maybe something like the sivga robin for a v shaped profile but I don’t remember how it’s staging for gaming was
Otherwise I could see the x2hr be an alternative just not the best for imaging or maybe a sivga 006 ( or similar the ones with rectangle like cups )
But like I said if tygr isn’t available the 560s is the next save bet
If it absolutely has to be between these and your priorities are fun and immersion… x2hr is the easy pick.
Only if you dont like a balanced sound of course. 560 is a bright neutral… not so much bassy
599 would be okay… maybe 558 as its has more oomph to its low ends.
X2hr would still be my pick in this case… very good staging, average imaging, warm for fun
Yes that is a very sharp V
Lol youd love tygr thats quite unfortunate. Hmm if you can try harmonicdyne zeus that may work too…
Hi guys, I took a not so short read (this is a long thread) through this whole thread, and first things first thank you falenkor for making it so easy to find advice.
It’s been around a year since I last bought headphones and am looking to get a new one at around $500-600.
My current setup is;
D10 to Atom
He4xx
AD1000X
I’ve used the DT770 before and they were quite comfortable one changing pads, but it sort of felt like my eardrums were being pressured. I’m not sure if that’s a problem with me, the 770 or closed backs in general. So while I’m not sure how well I would like other closed backs, I want to get something with isolation since in certain times of the day it get a bit louder where I live.
I’m not too much of a hardcore competitive player, playing quite a bit of rpgs, rogue lites, and other single player games besides FPS’s. But I do also enjoy playing Apex, Valorant and a bit of tarkov slightly competitively. So I’m not thinking of getting the absolute best for competitive, but after hearing closed backs aren’t great for competitive so that’s another point of hesitation I have.
Two paths I’m considering;
spend most of my budget for a closed back (I’ve seen stuff like 177x, aeon be recommended)
or
Get a cheaper closed back (beyer) / maybe IEM and spend the rest of my budget for a different open back.
It would be great if i could get some input on what you think would be the best options.
any news on covering the Epos h6 Pro?
Its in progress… not sure when I will be able to get around to it currently. When I do it will be posted here per the norm
awesome no worries thank you
hmm, did you ever change to a thicker pad? Closed backs do push sounds into the center of your head since its an enclosed sound while open back lets that sound breathe more, so a thicker pad or a open back may be more preferred in your case
So, usually we can just use closed backs and be fine… most people prefer the bassier approach of the closed backs anyway or the isolation they provide. Just depends on the person really.
aeon? eh maybe, youd want an upgrade to the amp and dac a bit for that, though in this case thats kind of at the max of your budget there for just the headphone
177x is a very good headphone though… portable, good balance in signature, maintains its space… you might find you really like those
cheaper than a 770? lol… nah
maybe IEMS but I am concerned about eardrum pressure… IEMS still push sound directly at the ear too but more so since its actually in the ear canal. Definitely preference use case if looking into IEMS you can go with something like Final Audios IEMS which work out fine also the ER2SE would work but man those go deep in the ears… they are heavily neutral and will work well though.
I would encourage finding a cheaper open back to see if maybe that fixes your eardrum pressure problems… I know someone with issues that led to major discomfort down the road from closed backs. Something like Tygr 300r or DT 880 would be a good choice to test since you have the amp and dac already and they have a relatively good space(its still dampened but least its not fully enclosed). 880 being semi open and tygr being full.
@Falenkor would the liquid spark+gsx 1000 be able to power dt 880 600 ohm loud without a problem? and if yes what version do you recommend there is lots of different 880s.

They had pretty thick pads, I think they were Dekoni velour.
It wasn’t a huge issue, just a minor discomfort. But I’ve only had that kind of issue with that pair and maybe one or two in-ears so I’m not really sure what the problem is.
The Tygr and 177x seem to be a bit more pricey to get in my country (japan), only bundle for tygr and $700 locally or 450 + 120 internationally for 177x.
Since there doesn’t seem to be too many options I’ll probably be going for the 880’s as I can get that locally for 220 but would there be any others i can consider than the 880?
I’ve also never experienced semi-opens, my current room shares just a slide door with another, I don’t really crank my volume high so I assume that should probably be barely audible?
A bit off topic but since I have budget to spare, are there any open backs you would recommend, or maybe an amp/dac upgrade? Mainly for movies and non-competitive gaming, mostly RPGs’.
Thanks a bunch for the help!
i bought tygr 300 r with liquid spark. do i put the liquid spark on high or low gain guys?
If you get to the volume level you want in low gain, use that.
