šŸ”¶ Vokyl Erupts

Yeah Iā€™m 904, hoping that Iā€™ll atleast get them by September. But who knows, they said all of the parts have been machined at this point. So all there time can be dedicated to assembly. But with covid I donā€™t know what they are actually able to do as a company. Who knows?

Alright, the Erupt is HEREā€¦! Holy cow, itā€™s been a while. My impressions so farā€¦

1). The 2 sets of stock pads make this headphone sound like TRASH :frowning: Very disappointing. The faux leather make the bass super bloated. The perforated pads sound almost kinda close to normal, without the crazy bass. But both pads make the headphone sound ā€œgoofyā€(weird FR), and moderately muffled.

2). The Dekoni DT Elite Hybrid pads make this headphone sound MUCH better(and Elite Sheepskin to a lesser degree). The bass sounds level and controlled, tone has improved nicely, and the muffle is mostly gone.

3). The stock cables are essentially cheap garbage. Still waiting on my Hart Audio cables(zzzā€¦). Both cables have in-line mute and volume wheel, but only one cable has a mic lol. The cables have a 3.5mm connector with 3 black rings(4-pole TRRS?), which works fine into my JDS ATOM Basic Boi Super Ampp.

4). With the drivers being angled, it seems that pad MATERIAL and pad DEPTH have a huge effect on the sound. The prototype pads were thick and perforated, just as these Elite Hybrids are(except without full perforations). My guess is that pads less thick than these will always sound worse, and that thicker pads may sound better(but not something Iā€™d necessarily bet on lol). Iā€™d like to try velour/suede pads that are equally as thick, but those donā€™t exist, I donā€™t thinkā€¦

5). In my brief FPS audio tests(recorded videos), these still sound excellent and highly precise. My AD700X sounds very closeā€¦but with the obvious, painfully bright, bass-less tuning. It seems that AD700X presents sounds too far left or right, where positions sound correct with Erupt.

6). You can crank the volume WAY up, and itā€™s just smooth music. They are nicely detailed(no shimmering micro details), as I remember the Prototype being, while being liquid smooth, with good sub-bass(I played some horror games with the Prototype, where this was noted). With the hybrid pads, without EQ, Iā€™m really enjoying them! The sound is very engaging in-game, and a tad bit dry/veiled (and tonally skewed to a degree), but details still seem clearly audible. I enjoy the amount of bass there is; everything has a good kick, though Iā€™d say the bass quality is simply above-average. These are very close to passing the Weird Al Testā€¦ Iā€™m sensing some lower treble brightness. I can only expect them to improve from here, with a better cable on the way, and other pads to possibly test.

7). The headband clamp isnā€™t bad, but a little more tension would be nice.

I found that the Dekoni Fenestrated Sheepskin pads work the best.

Did you try the Hybrid? Or a thick velour? I have a fenestrated for my AD700X, but I hate how scratchy that material feels :frowning:

Theres a lot of complaints on the bass and it appears you have the same issue due to those pads. Shame for the price point of a $400 headphone you would think it would have some good pads that donā€™t destroy the sound and a good cable. Honestly, sounds like the fidelio x2 hr or argon mk3 would be a better option than these imo from your description.

Brainwavz xl velour are large and pretty thick so you may try thoseā€¦ there are also companies who make custom pads and I am sure other headphone pads should be able to fit on the vokyl erupts

Well, weā€™re not to the $400 retail stage yet. Maybe they will A) reduce the target price, since the current stock version performs so badly, or B) keep the price and include suitable pads & cable. Itā€™s got to be hard making a headphone for the first time :\ So I hope they can hire some talent and come up with a headphone that truly kills it with their next headphone(or revision of current model).

Argon and X2HR, eh. You think those are tops for their price? I would probably avoid the Argon, being closed, but would like to try the X2HR, since I tried X2(but wasnā€™t too impressed). Iā€™m honestly at the stage where I need to make the jump to the very top, to HD800s :\

argons are actually really nice, though mmx 300 is said to sound just as good and be just as wide despite being a closed back. X2 HR I think is great but not the greatest if you wanted something for competitive. Itā€™s a really warm smooth sounding headphone with incredibly pleasant bass and a very wide soundstage. I personally use my Aeon Open X over them now but they still reside in my collection. I suppose it really depends on what your looking for in your headphone though since everyone has different preferences and different hearing. Though I wouldnā€™t state argons or x2ā€™s are ā€œbestā€ for their price. Thatā€™s kinda subjective as is lol

Nah, I wonā€™t go to hd 800s despite their unique sound. Not worth my wallet I have to many others I am interested in and I donā€™t see the merit of such an expensive headphone for gaming.

Are you saying this because youā€™ve heard them beforeā€¦? Or youā€™d just rather have 3 or 4 different headphones to play around with, than the very BEST one? =p Iā€™m pretty bored of the mid-range stuff by now :frowning: And I need to have an ultimate headphone to benchmark against.

For the record, there is no ā€œbestā€ in this hobby nor are there metas. Going into this hobby with that mindset will literally drain your wallet dry. Theres just good and bad headphones or in some special cases headphones that fit a particular genre. Depends on what your looking for, I personally feel the DT 1990 are just one of the best gaming headphones on the market but there are alternatives like T1 among many others meanwhile casual gaming I rely on my Aeons yet theres still the T5P, Fostex lineup even those from massdrop, argons, HD800s, Stax, Focals, etc. Theres far to many headphones at the same time you have to also include the fact that Amps, Dacs, Cables, Pads, and Modifications can all change the sound.

I havenā€™t particularly sat down with hd800s right now primarily due to the budget but at the same time in that price point I would definitely 100% sooner sit down with a ZMF Auteur or one of their other headphones because I would be going all out at that point. There isnā€™t much reason to really go all out past like $600 for gaming headphones as gaming can only be taken so far meanwhile music is a much bigger difference. I would definitely take 3 or 4 different headphones to my collection than the hd800

Until I finally hear them, Iā€™m considering them the best(since thatā€™s what Iā€™ve often heard said). Outside of the ultra stuff, like SR-009, Utopia, Susvara, etc. If you havenā€™t heard them either, I guess weā€™re cruising on the S.S. Speculation until we get one. I have owned HD700, which wasā€¦frighteningly bizarre lol.

I think I am just not a big fan of the later sennheisers personally. Suppose its a personal preference though I have not auditioned higher than 660 s yet.

I love 660  I used 600 for a good 4-5 years, and was happy to finally be rid of their particular, soft sound. Awful for gaming lol

660 was definitely a good improvement I will give it that. Saw that edit. yesā€¦ yes it is though sounds good for music

I auditioned the HD800s a while back, alongside Utopias, LCD-4, and LCD-2 microsuedesā€¦by far preferred the LCD-2. 800s and Utopias were great for classical, giving a large concert hall like sound, but overall I just didnā€™t care for them, sometimes being a bit sharp. The LCD-4 was just too clinical/dry sounding. The LCD-2 microsuedes, though, had a really nice thump in the low end to give body, and a more relaxed through the mids and treble sound that I really liked. Granted, though I tried them on a couple of different ampā€™s, all of them were McIntosh, so not sure if pairing could have been an issue.

I now own the LCD-2, 58x, Elex, and Elegia, and really have no interest in going to the top of any of the 3 brands. I know they may technically outperform what I have, but if I canā€™t just sit and enjoy the music, whatā€™s the point?

One for pure music, one for pure gaming  If youā€™re into that, that is. I believe Iā€™ve heard original LCD-2 and LCD-3, and LCD-3 was pretty much the 2nd best headphone Iā€™ve ever heard, with HE-6 being my #1.

I have been intrigued about the HE-6ā€¦just wish it didnā€™t require spending as much or more on a speaker amp to run them

I think vocals actually have a pretty nice character on these. Rich/vivid and fairly intimate/focused. Vocals and soundstage seem to be the high-points.

Not sure about that, but an Emotiva A-100 is only $229  Not sure what changes occured with HE-6se.

Imo you would be better off grabbing a different headphone at that point, I would personally rather have a larger driver hifiman on an a3 than an he6 on a basx a100 imo, you really want to get a higher quality amp for more benefit to get what you paid for out of the he6. For an he6 I would look used around the 600 range ish for a nice power amp

Itā€™s based on the 6 screw he6, the first run models were great and comparable to a 6 screw, but there are some bad versions from adorama camera floating around that got cleared out on a sale

Iā€™m liking this EQ, with Elite Hybrid pads. Adds some clarity/sparkle and gets rid of a lot of bass flab.

Beginning of this song sounds awesome on the Erupt:
