What did you buy today? (Part 1)

Been meaning to ask you, but don’t want to start a thread for it.

What planars (open, closed, doesn’t matter) would you suggest for a Liquid Platinum
I still like sound stage and good imaging, but want something that might go well with hip hop or something with big bass. I’m not a bass head, so nothing extreme, but something that would give me some good performance the T1.2 and Elegia’s don’t already cover.

Budget
a grand-ish.

FWIW - Been looking at the LCD-3’s if their description of the headphone is accurate, thats what I want.

Thoughts?

im not mon but, most of the planars would be good. For bass, I would recommend an audeze or my favorite at the price range, the edition x v2.

So I like stuff like the hekv2, arya, edition xx, lcd 2 pre fazor and fazor, lcd 3 pre fazor, aeon 2 closed or open. Generally all good quality matches with the LP imo

I would agree the hekv2 and lcd 2 pre or lcd 3 pre fazor would be great picks imo (but I wouldn’t recommend the fazor audeze imo)

Just some new goodies

Out of the box, I was met with this (the right button looks like it is going to fall off):

The ESP/95X has arrived today. I’m
very shaken. Over a two hour period of listening, I couldn’t find any song that didn’t sound good on these. It was very hard to restrain myself from turning up the volume to the max; my ears bled, but the headphones just kept singing no matter how high I turned up the volume. I almost cried several times. I sang with some songs. I almost started dancing for others. I was sold from the first second, but it kept getting better and better for me as I listened longer.

To some of you, these may not be all that impressive, but it was a huge jump for me from the ATH-AD900x. I can totally see why the 950 costs $1k, and why it’s not exactly a bad price for a pair of electrostats. I want to write impressions a week or so later, but I’m having such a hard time containing my excitement. These definitely are my “budget” end game. I’m afraid my ears actually cannot keep up with the full extent of the 95X anyways.

Congratulations!

I had these on loan for a couple of weeks and I was very impressed with them. They have excellent tonality, are fast, lite, and airy.

I didn’t have a chance to, but I’m told that they take EQ very well which would help bump up the low end. I keep going back and forth thinking of buying these. Also, the Dekoni Fenustrated Lambskin pads are a nice upgrade.

If you go the EQ route I recommend something like a Schiit Loki. They’re not too pricey and will give you the frequencies you’ll want to play with.

Glad you’re enjoying them so much! I know I did.

Cheers!

Totally have EQ on the list. I do want a Loki, just for the sake of physicality, but my wallet hurts haha. Maybe Vesper pads. I’m actually really happy with the stock bass response (I do like them a bit recessed) but maybe a touch bit more treble for me.

For now, I’m going to relish the 95X for what it is.

When I became interested in music at the end of the 1970s, I bought the Sennheiser HD424 as my first headphone.

Later, when mobility came into the hi-fi area through the walkman, I “refined” it with a couple of Koss Porta Pros. :+1:

Then the cycle of audiophile madness began. :money_mouth_face:

And today i decided to take a look back at the roots and had a load of Koss earphones delivered to me. :ok_hand:

To be honest, these “antique headphones” were all so well developed, that of the Sennheiser from the 70s, the Beyerdynamic DT’s from the 80s and the Koss from the 90s.

Compared to today’s headphones, SIGNIFICANT tonal improvements tend to be absent.

The top models from back then only differ from modern headphones in nuances.

Mind you, we’re talking about dynamic drivers in headphones, of course there are differences to magnetostats or electrostats.

noiceeeeeeeeeeeeee. we have the endgame snapshots thread that alot of these should be in lol

Will there ever be an endgame for audiophile madmen like me?

No idea! :man_shrugging:

If you start finding the sound a bit thin, the Loki will help a lot in that area. This is the only headphone that I needed to boost all four bands on the Loki.

Yeah I have to agree with you there, I will buy one for my KSC75s. Since I have been using my KSC75s for a while now, the ear hooks that came with is beginning to hurt my ears a bit and it can run my prolong listening experience for it. I love the KSC75s and they are like S in my tier list but yeah, I am going to get the headband for these.

Apologies–I thought I responded earlier, but I got distracted.

I am really impressed by Arya. They do feel like a “baby Susvara” to me in a lot of ways, and they could very much be endgame for a lot of people. They’re a compelling option for their price point, and upgrading from there to Susvara requires truckloads of cash and a lot of effort.

Arya has the same effortless delivery of sound as Susvara; it feels like music is just breathing out of the air around you vs being pounded out by drivers that you’re wearing. Frequency response is perfectly coherent with no sense of anything being over- or under-emphasized. Clarity is top notch. Both headphones have superb bass response, managing both a lot of slam and extreme control in low frequencies. Certain electronic music with nuanced but hard-hitting bass is just fantastic with either headphone. However, both really do play nicely with all kinds of music and they’re pretty forgiving (moreso than the 800s, for example).

Since posting that photo of Arya w/ Kann Cube, I have also tried it with my SP1000 + amp, which is markedly improved. The sense of space from my DAPs is collapsed somewhat compared to listening from a desktop setup, but the fact that I can even bring Arya out of the house and drive it portably is impressive. A buddy of mine tried it on his Fiio M11 Pro and that worked as well, though he pretty much had to redline it to get enough power, lol.

Susvara does basically everything Arya does, but with better detail and timbre so real it’s spooky. Arya sound like headphones–excellent headphones that do pretty much everything very well, but headphones nevertheless. Susvara sound so convincing that it’s easy to forget that they’re making the sound you’re hearing. The sensation is similar to watching a 3D movie in a theater–slip on the glasses and everything comes into focus, but it’s not the glasses that are projecting the movie.

Of course, the cost of entry is sky high, and then it’s a trick to power Susvara. A90 powers them quite well, surprisingly. A lot of people turn to speaker amps. I’m in the process myself of enabling a chain that uses “Zone B” of the McIntosh 8207 that powers my loudspeaker surround sound setup. That amp does 200W per channel at 8 or 4 ohms; McIntosh estimated it should deliver about 25W at Susvara’s 60 ohms (that’s roughly 8x what A90 does, FWIW).

In any case, the cost of ownership for Susvara can quickly spiral out of control not only because of the initial cost of entry, but for the sake of building an entire chain that’s precise and powerful enough to do them justice. When all is said and done, I’ll be using a Holo May into a Goldpoint level control and then the 8207 for an ultimate SS chain for Susvara. All told that chain will have cost me almost as much as I paid for my truck.
