What did you watch today?

Agree with the eye level thing. I don’t know how so many people comfortably mount their TVs over fireplaces. As for screen size I partially agree. If I can capture the whole screen with just eye movement I’m good. If I have to move my whole head I’m too close. Generally speaking though, and with HD screens, the vast majority of people use screens that are too small or sit too far away for the screen size for “optimal engagement”, for lack of better term.

I think the term is ‘immersion’, no?

Could be. Been awhile since I read up on HT, TBH. With 1080p screens the recommendation was so with a distance from the screen that was 2-3 times the screen height.

I’m still rocking a 42 in plasma from 2006

does anyone here know if using a rear projection solution, if it fixes the contrast / brightness issue projectors suffer from vs. a TV?

No personal experience, but from what I understand I think contrast and brightness are inherent limitations of certain projectors. I don’t think the position will help as much as the projection surface (screen, walk, etc) or the projector itself (getting a better/different projector).

No your only options are a brighter projector or a high gain screen.
Some of the black screens work really well in ambient light, but they get silly expensive.
Actually I just looked and they aren’t as silly as I remember.
I haven’t seen the view sonic one in person, the Sony one was impressive.

This is correct, AFAIK. It comes down to the ratio of how much light the bulb can put out vs how much of that light can be attenuated to create contrast. Because TVs have the potential (it’s not used in all technologies) to have individually lit pixels they are current winning in the contrast game.

why is that? is the density of the screen still so high that the image’s contrast is still being affected negatively?

Any screen basically has to reflect and scatter the incoming light, a nominal screen does so evenly over say 180 degrees, higher gain screens reflect over less of an area, and hence have gain.
Same principle as a horn speaker.
The black screens as I understand it are designed to diffuse in coming ambient light , but only reflect light from a relatively narrow incoming angle, the net result is they reject the ambient light, and as a bonus you get an increase in contrast.
But at the cost of some naturalness in color.

I’ve been watching the clone wars series on disney plus and it seems to have a VERY strong right channel bias. Has anyone else noticed this? I’ve watched other shows on Netflix and haven’t had the same issue so it’s not my equipment.

Edit: just checked with the mandalorian and it seemed fine, so it’s not my Amazon fire tv stick or disney plus.

As for the show itself, it’s pretty much confirmation that the prequels could have been good if they had better writing. I love the esthetic of the prequels and I’m glad I can enjoy some good media that properly uses it.

Netflix had the problem dont know if its fixed. also netflix atmos is weak on appletv4k.

Finishing my 4K box set of Lord of the Rings Tonight, so impressed with the picture quality across all three films. With everyone asleep I’m going LDAC from the Sony 800mk2 > BTR5 > Legacy 3’s and it’s like a small theater in my head, absolutely love this setup for late movie watching

Well here’s a plus 2 from me, but I go way back I’ve bought the trilogy each time it’s been released, DVD, Blu ray and now 4K. I’m super happy with it

Watched Fellowship of the Ring earlier today on 4K blu-ray with Dolby Vision, looks great in general and audio is very good but there are a few scenes that have been cleaned up a bit too much, where you can clearly notice the green screen.

Oh I agree, there are points where it’s not as clean but it totally blows away the Blu-ray’s IMO
