Watched For All Mankind S1 again because S2 is coming soon and I wanted it fresh in my memory. Loved it again just as much as the first time.
Gave ST:Discovery S3 a shot because someone told me it got better than S1&2. It has, but not by much, I still mostly hated it, still has my thumbs-down on Netflix and ratings of 3-5/10 on other platforms.
Then I found some lists on TVGuide with “things to watch if you liked X”, and got into:
Russian Doll (OK-ish)
The Society (excellent, too bad it’s canceled)
Tales from the Loop (2 eps. in seems excellent as well, like a version of Fringe that managed to be mysterious and out-there without getting all the way dumb and blatantly pseudoscientific).
I thought S3 kind of was worse than the previous seasons, although i think they are all pretty bad… With a few adjustments, and just stop calling it a Star Trek series, i think it could be quite a bit better. But, when they put the Star Trek name on it i get certain expectations. It should stick to the rules and ways of the Star Trek universe, and not rewrite the whole concept… I mean, The Orville turned out to be much more Star Trek than Discovery even aspires to be, both in “style”, story telling, universe and overall feel (at least when you can see past the one-liners)
fried my micca covo test speakers using them as atmos ch replaying the scene, “for all mankind” where the black soldier is waiting at the base parking lot for his wife and the sound of a plane pans overhead. Awesome.
Well the main thing I was looking for was an end to the focus on war, and the first half of the season seemed to be finally going in that direction, but ofc it didn’t last and they still brought it back to their war obsessions, same thing they ruined Picard with.
Yeah, that’s why I called it “ST:Discovery”, so I wouldn’t have to spell out the undeserved part of the title and make my skin crawl. It turned out to have such an appropriate acronym though, “STD”. * chuckles *
And yes, The Orville is worlds better (worlds startrekky-er), too bad they’re wrapping it up with this upcoming 3rd season. Hell, I even liked Lower Decks more than STD or Picard, and I’m not a big fan of that amped-up-on-speed type of humor.
So, to check if my memory served me right, i started watching Star Trek The Next Generation about 1 and half week ago. I’m 23 episodes into season 1, and although it shows it age (the special effects, general sets/design), it is Star Trek the way i feel Star Trek should be…
The plot in the episodes might be less action oriented than STD, and some of the episode themes feels a bit outdated and even cheesy. In general though, the stories and characters feels like they have more depth and thought put into them than in STD. Just the fact that TNG uses proper rank, and the characters have so much more respect for the starfleet way of command…
It has to be said that my introduction to Star Trek was watching TNG so i might be a bit swayed in my opinion. TNG was on tv every afternoon when i was 15-16years old. TNG was running “in loop” on one of the channels i had access to (Sky uk), so i think i’ve caught most of the episodes (perhaps missed out on few of the later ones as the channel got scrambled after a while when Sky got to be pay-tv.)
Loved Babylon 5 back in the day… and yeah… its old now, but then again, im currently on season 2 of Star Trek The Next Generation, so that should really put me in the “old timers” category
“The little things” HBOmax . If they keep this model of releasing new movies ill maintain a subcription (covid and all).
Not one of denzels better ones. This is no true detective first season. 6/10
Examples so far would not get me to go out to the megaplex for stadium seating and overpriced popcorn . Although warner still got kongzilla and dune for multiple purchases.
Giving it another point for the cars 4k dolby vision/atmos although dont hear much atmos. 7/10
