No love for King Crimson?
I like Discipline.
Anything involving Fripp gets love from me.
Joni Mitchell is probably my most listened to artist and one of a small group that can bring me to tears… her honesty, lyrics and arrangements have always been amazing.
Personally I listen to metal.
Favourite artists:
- Gone in April
- Behemoth
- Trivium
- Iron Maiden
- Hämatom
Honestly, II Balletto di Bronzo is easier to listen to. But you are right, Ys has a distinct sound that you can find with TMV. I actually like their other stuff on Progressivamente Story.
I sat through a System of a Down concert because they happened to play after TMV back in the day. I think I was one of the few TMV fans in the arena.
So, decided to get a little more in depth with some of my favorite bands. In no particular order or set up by genre. Here goes. Type O Negative, Primus, King Crimson, Opeth, Tool, Queen, Yes, Carcass, Genesis (the older stuff, mainly while Steve Hackett was still around), Gwar, David Bowie, Haken, Jethro Tull, Kansas, The Kinks, Destruction, Kreator, Sodom, Led Zep, Muse, Morbid Angel, Pantera, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Pungent Stench, Radiohead, Rush, all of the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack discs, Steven Wilson, Suicidal Tendencies, Talking Heads, Tori Amos, The Who, & Agalloch (even though the lead singer has turned out to be fairly reprehensible). I listen to a lot more than just these, but these are the ones I’ve invested the most time & money into over the years.
Definetly some Rush (songs like Dreamline, Temple of Syrinx, Xanadu and so on are just awesome); Sinatra aka perfect music for cooking and showering. Melvins if you are into that deep basey stoner rock (Stoner Witch ist just a blast of an album) man there are so many great artists
Good recommandations, but you just mentioned just slight preludes to a lot of these composers, especially the classical ones.
Some more extras
Rachmaninov
Piano Concerto 2, Vocalise, all preludes (esp No 5 in G), sonata in G minor for Cello & Piano.
Tschaikovsky
Violin Concerto, considered one of the best ones (and hardest) there is
Beethoven
Symphony no 9 (esp the 4th movement), violin sonata no 9 ‘Kreutzer’, violin sonata 5 ‘Spring’, hell might as well listen to all the 32 piano sonatas
Bach
Violin concertos (all of them), orchestral suites I-IV … and like 100 other works
Vivaldi
‘La Stravaganza’ op. 4 (12 beautiful violin concertos), all the cello sonatas
BONUS:
Yoko Kanno
Wolf’s Rain, very very beautiful soundtrack
WARNING: When it comes to classical there are many possbile recording qualities and interpretations out there. A bad recording can have a lot of background noise and harsh sounding instruments.
I sometimes listen to like 5 different versions of the same piece until I decide on something to add to the collection.
I recommend getting the most recent versions you can find, the quality of the microphones is very different from like 20 years ago.
Right now can’t link the album but…
This could be disastrous, but we could all put our favorite songs into one collaborative playlist. No genre, anything goes!
i might start a separate thread for them. what a voice
I definitely need to dig into Yoko Kanno’s work more, I have a strong affinity for the Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex soundtracks. They drew me to the series actually, I heard the music before I watched the show.
Bach to rock. Playing Steven Wilson’s Home Invasion concert while reading this thread.
A new discovery I’ll plug: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. They’re a psyc/jazz fusion/prog rock/sometimes metal/sometimes bluesy always experimental and ridiculously prolific Australian band.
For you headphone lovers you there give this track a listen:
Holy crap you really learn to appreciate imaging with this track. The first time I heard it I felt really creeped out.
Just like with Yosi Hirakawa’s stuff, these sounds are interesting for an audiophile as it’s not something you hear often, but that’s about it. I never considered them actual “music” in the artistic-emotional sense, since music is more than just a nice collection of sounds.
An example of something that is actual music and has interestingly placed sounds, but it can get even better than this.
